2008, the year in photographs (part 3 of 3)
2008 has been an eventful year to say the least - it is difficult to sum up the thousands of stories in just a handful of photographs. That said, I will try to do what I've done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It's not the story of 2008, it's certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. This is a multi-entry story, 120 photographs over three days. Look for part 1 and part 2 earlier. (40 photos total)

This sequence of 12 frames was taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft over a span of about 45 minutes on March 12, 2008. In that brief time, Cassini covered almost 40,000 kilometers in its approach to a flyby encounter with Enceladus, one of the moons of Saturn. The overexposure and smearing of the images gives a hint of the raw speed involved - 14.4 km/sec (or 32,211 mph). Shortly after this sequence, at its closest, Cassini approached within 52 km (32.3 miles) of the surface of Enceladus. (NASA/JPL-Caltech) #

A patient with advanced pulmonary TB in a tuberculosis hospital in Mumbai, India receives a daily injection as well as oxygen. Photojournalist James Nachtwey brought us (through photography) a story this year of a new, dangerous type of tuberculosis called Extreme Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis, or XDR-TB. Tuberculosis is both preventable and curable, but inadequate treatment has been driving the emergence of XDR-TB, especially in developing nations. For more information about XDR-TB, please visit xdrtb.org. (© James Nachtwey/VII) #

The utter pain and terror that occurs in some of these photos is excruciating, and agonizing in the fact that we must all come to realize that it is people like us who do those things.
thanks....
I say for comment 270;
Are you really think that Iran support terrorism?
I don't agree with you. Today everybody find that Iran love people and support humans that need help. like Gaza an etc.
Israeil and USA absolutly mean KILL, TERROR, HUNGRY, BLOOD, etc.
please think again and do with moral!
Great Photos!!, Disheartened to see more pictures in Violence,
God!! Bless this year to be filled with luv and peace.
It's nice to know there is PEACE on Earth. It's right there on #38, and now it's on my desktop to remind me of that feeling Everyday! THANKS Big Picture! This is the best Address out there, by far. The Portraits of life, Good and Bad, are always Top Notch and Stunning! Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what will be here Tomorrow...Billy Mac Columbia, SC

Where are the pictures of the Israeli towns being terrorized by the constant barrage of Hamas missles targeting civilians?
Fantastic pictures.
Fabuous
Very interesting pictures! It is amazing how we can interpret the world through these pictures. They definitely show some of our reality, well done.
please please stick some photos from GAZA...
I think the main current issue is that poor people..that nobody heared their voice.
AWESOME!
number 18 is amazing
buenisimos
great pictures
Comrade,very good
good work.
I really enjoyed looking at this collection.
let's hope for a more peaefull and less violent 2009
Picture of two dead and broken bodies are awful to watch; but we should remember that these were the bodies of two TERRORISTS trying to kill civilians!
I don't want to see the loss of ANY innocent persons no matter who they are; but anyone in this world who kills others for their own ideology should NOT expect others to sit and watch. We should not tolerate bullies anywhere!
Formal religions, no matter of what kind, are without any exeption, the most efficient strategy Satan uses to attain his aim.
For a moment there I thought I was watching a Michael Moore or Oliver Stone movie. Wouldn't exactly consider that professional, but, aside from that (we're all used to that already anyway), great pictures and good work, congratulations.
comments about the pic#12 are absolutly wrong because its rubbish that the terrorist were carrying their pakistani passports and pakistan made toothpaste etc for proof that they belong to pakistan, the indian government has lied first telling the terrorist are 20 then 15 then 10 and they never gave details and provesabout any of them except ajmal kassab who was kidnapped f rom singapore couple of years back and was in the custody of indian s and they are using him to obtain thier goals ,which is mainly to declare pakistan a terrorist state in the world.
wow, the last photo and the picture of obama are stunning!
Alberto

No words can define the work done by the great great great photographer..................................... Extraoridinary, Exceptional and excellent work....
really captures what life on earth today is all about....really marvellous
I am sorry to say it 375, but I totally agree with you that 368 should have his head examined. 348 should also accompany 368. Their idea of Internet is to use it to put their hate in writing and try to influence readers. They don't care about the beauty of all these photos - be they sad or otherwise. They should be enjoying and congratulating the excellent and professional work, rather than making negative remarks…
WHY CAN'T ONE, NEUTERAL INDIVUDUAL RULE ALL THE WORLD, THAT WOULD BE EASY AND; AMAZING OUTCOMES WOULD BE ACHIEVED.
HOPE BARACKA SAVES THE WORLD BEFORE THE WORLD SAVES ITSELF..!
The people making comments like 'no olmypic games!!' might want to read the 'part 3 of 3' bit

Have you some photos of Brazilian Índios?
Parabens!
ecxellent photographs, they captive important moments of our amazing planet!
thanks for sharing all this art work with us.
Thanks for sharing! They are really great photos but it does sadden me to think of all the violence occurring in our world. Unfortunately I believe the violence is about power and greed primarily, though those in power and getting richer by the second are not who we see on the front lines nor are they dying. The wealth in this world is infinite and no one should be homeless or hungry or sad.
I Like very very much!
:)

There are so many other events happening in the world which we never know or learn about until an amazing e-mail like this comes to us. Thank you for alll your hard work and dedication to show us how mankind spends its days and nights. Simply SPECTACULAR!
Dear sir
The year in photo
A look back at the major events of the past year.
Absolutely brilliant photos, but they make me weep.
For the 430 - there are two towns named Visegrad, in Bosnia and Hungary. The photo was taken in Bosnia as stated below the picture (Diving competition from the famous Visegrad bridge, July 2008). The famous Visegrad bridge - a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, the bridge of twelve arches, 170 metres in length and over 6 metres wide, was built in 1571 by Kodža Mimar, has inspired the Nobel Prize-winning Bosnian author Ivo Andriæ to write famous novel “The Bridge over the Drina”. Apart from its historical, documentary, symbolic and ontological value, it is also of incalculable architectural and aesthetic significance.
Good fotos
Photography at its best. Very enlightening. Thank you.
fantastico
