Big Picture on Holiday
Just a brief note - starting today, The Big Picture will be on holiday until its next entry on Friday January 2nd, 2009. Thank you so much, every one of you who has viewed, commented, and participated in this blog this year - it's really completely blown me away, and my life is richer (and a bit busier) for it. (more inside)
This blog started as an idea of mine early this year, and I was so happy to eventually launch it in June. In the seven months since, I've posted 98 entries, which have been viewed over 35 million times - and commented on nearly 50,000 times. (Yes, I read and moderate all the comments. It's been a long seven months)
And wow - the things I've learned, the amazing people I've met along the way - it has been an unbelievable emotional rollercoaster, unlike anything I've ever been a part of before. Again many thanks to you and to the many photographers who have provided so much to this effort. And the comments - all of your insightful, infuriating, encouraging, discouraging, banal and inspirational comments... they have taught me (and maybe a few others) a great deal as well, and I'm grateful - for all of them.
I plan to continue The Big Picture in 2009, and am hoping to start a companion blog soon to act as a "meta" blog, a place for me to make occasional commentary (like this entry), to point out amazing websites or other things I've discovered along the way, and to take questions, comments and suggestions that might not be appropriate on the main site.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Solstice, Happy Festivus - and most of all, Happy New Year to everyone. See you in 2009.
-Alan

I was shown this site by my son. The quality of the photos blows me away. Surely this must be the best picture site anywhere. Thanks and a very happy New Year !
Thanks, Alan! These images inspire me to be a better photograher.
Since the first time I saw Big Picture posts on Digg, this site has become one of my favorites. Keep up the good work, and I'm looking forward to whats next. Happy New Year!
godspeed alan....keep it real.............
Alan - your selection (and timing) of subjects - combined with your selection of the photos in your topics is outstanding - each series is opened with greater and greater expectations - and as an amateur photographer, the hardest job is knowing what to throw away and what to keep and publish - your skill in deciding what to publish is admired by me, and all the others who contribute (or dont).
Whats great is that some of the photos arent perfect in terms of technique - not quite in focus, some camera shake, but your decision to publish because of the image that is captured is always right. Peter (Auckland, New Zealand)

Thank you so much for such a great photo blog.
You show parts of the world and cultures that are unknown to the majority of Americans...
Congratulations Alan on a Job well done. and to all the photographers that contributed to your blog. It's by far the best on the web. Looking forward to Next year.
The Big Picture is way up top on my personal list of cool things that happened on the interwebs in '08, no doubt.
Thank you for your tireless work, your eagle-editing-eye, your thoughtful commentary and above all, your keen sense of storytelling. My gut tells me that The Big Picture just wouldn't be the same without the heart that beats behind the scenes.
Wishing you even more success in the years to come -- you are a truly great example of what talent paired with humility can do for this world.
In short: rock on, Mr. Taylor ... rock on.
It's cliched to say a photo's worth a thousand words, but the photos in this blog really lend a deep perspective to the events of our day that is impossible to grasp from reading newspapers and websites.
So a million trillion thanks for all your work :)
I am absolutely amazed every time I open this link, and I love it so much I posted a link via my MySpace for others to see how wonderful it is. The imagery is stunning and the captions are insightful, keep up the good work Alan and anyone else who has contributed, good luck in 2009!
