More of London from above, at night
In August of last year, I was happy to be able to share some amazing photos of London, as seen from above at night by photographer Jason Hawkes. That entry continues to be one of the most consistently popular ones I've ever put together, so I was happy to hear from Jason again recently, and to find that he wanted to share another 24 photos from 2008 below. Jason shot these images with a camera attached to gyro-stabilized mounts from a Eurocopter AS355, hired out at around £1150 (GBP) per hour, using Nikon gear and either a 14-24mm or a 70-200mm lens. Even with that, the low light and heavy vibrations can make things difficult, Jason says "I often shoot tethered to my MacBook Pro to check the sharpness of the images whilst I shoot." Mr. Hawkes has agreed to jump into the comments and answer some of your questions as well, so feel free to ask. (24 photos total)

there is no more living truth than what has been captured in the silence of a click on this camera
The pictures are filled with awe, music, soul, love and mystique. They are a culmination of hundreds of years of civilization, monarchies, reformations, wars, human suffering ,life and death.
I love to feel the beauty of what has been captured in the flow of energy throughout the photograph journal.
Congratulations and thank you for this gift .
I left London a long time ago. I sometimes wish - like now - to be living there gain. I can even estimate where I used to live. Quite amazing and very impressive.
Congratulations.
I've been to London several times and ,after seeing these pictures, I hope to come back soon. To cap it all, I wish I could fly to see this lovely city the way I've seen it today. This is a breathtaking gift for our eyes. Simply awesome. Well done Jason, Each picture is a true masterpiece.
Simply the best!!

absolutely amazing photos
read comment 657.
i totally agree.
I too was born in London in 1936 and endured the war years and the Blitz. I also lived and worked there until the early '90's when I retired to the country. I now live in Scotland and on the odd occasion I return to 'the smoke' (Oh yes, I remember those ghastly smogs!) I feel an outsider. It may have its beauty and I am still proud to be called a Londoner but it is such an unfriendly place. I am so glad that I no longer live there and can enjoy the peace and serenity AND friendliness of Scotland. It is also wonderful to be able to see the night sky - invisible in London with all that light pollution.
LONDON......STILL SHINING.......MARVELOUS PICTURES........WOW.......ITS REALLY MINDBLOWING..............MY DREAM CITY.........
wow these pics of london are amazing!
I'm stunnig
I want more photos from Rome
I loved the pictures, but what massive light pollution. No wonder the night sky is no longer visible to most Londoners.
I have always said that the Greatest City in the world is NOT New York (as they always tell me in America) but London, the beautiful city where I was born and raised. These photos just go to amply demonstrate this.
I believe it was Oscar Wilde who once said that "He who tires of London
tires of life"
Couldn't have put it better myself!
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner that I love London so..................
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE WONDERFUL PHOTOGRAPHS........
I met my hubby just after he got demobbed from the Army he become a Black Cab driver in February 1951 until April 1981 when we moved over to Australia, I'm still regard Dear old London as home, your photographs are just so wonderful, I shall forwards to other who will appreciate them, keeping a copy for us.
Thank - thank you so very much Rosa.
very nice photos, so clear
As the saying goes " when a man is tired of London he is tired of life" - | This is particularly true if you are a Londoner which I am thru and thru. My sister who is 85 years of age never tires of making trips to the heart of London; she is constantly boarding buses and trains and walks for hours around her favourite parts of London - it is just great!. Best City in the World! Thank you for bringing London into my home.........
SIMPLY WONDERFUL.
Любопытно! Все бы так писали :)
Absolutely class! im so proud to be a londoner
best city in the world!!
thanks jason.
crazy beatiful kept in context
Absolutely mind blowing views of london, as Samuel Johnson observed the man who is tired of London is tired of life. Makes me proud to be English. London maybe old but one can see she is adaptable and worthy of the 21st century.
I have lived in Cape Town for 41 years, born in the UK worked in London and had many visits, oh but did these pictures make me homsick & want to weep,
just BEAUTIFUL and a tug at my heart for London.
Gorgeous!!!
i soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wanna live there. it is breath taking.
i have always wanted to go to London now i am sure some day i will. your pictures are amazing; i am studying photography an i hope some day i could take this cane of pictures just like you; they are amazing and beautiful!!!!!!
Stunning- thats the only word i can think of
Can you tell us more about the technical aspects of the shoot, like what lens were used, exposure, shutter speeds and was any kind of software correction used? Did you use any fixed focal length lenses ? I am also particularly curious about the gryo stablized mounts that would have been used for the shot ? Finally how did you manage to shoot all this from a helicopter, were u lying flat on the helicopter floor , did you continously radio the pilot for a particular shot location or just shot things as you saw them. Approximately from what height did you click all of these pictures, Am an amateur photographer myself and I dream to take stuff like that.
Fantastic pictures. I love London. I think it's my favorite city.
Fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing.
Absolutely amazing to say the least. My daughter and son-in-law (Londoner) live in Kent. I know London doesn't look like this during the day, but the night view takes your breath away. Fantastic and beyond genius photography. Truly God's gift to all of us. Thank you.
Great pictures..great City. Working there is a great experience.
The photos are great. London will be a great city to live in if you throw all the Brits out of it!!!!
Great photographs!
How can I've been away from London for so long?
Well, they are such magnificent photos one is awstruck. But I wish you could go back to seventy years ago, just before the war and take the same pictures in daytime - I worked in Thames House, Millbank - and I could drool over my memories!
But still, Thanks!
Was just reading the comments through and noted this one above from Betty Chapman.
Just in case you happen to read this Betty, I did a book of aerial views over London with library images taken from around 1920 - 45. I then re shot the image as it looked. The book was called Over London and was published in 1990 by Harper Collins, perhaps you could pick up a copy on Amazon. It really was quite a nice book, amazing how some of London had changed beyond all recognition
and other parts were still indentical.
In answer to question 770. Images are shot on Nikon equipment, Raw files put through Lightroom, an Adobe product. Obviously the main difficulty is over coming the vibrarion of the helicopter using very slow shutter speeds, for which I use a specially constructed mount with gyro stabalizers.
Jason Hawkes.
I never had been to London but after seeing the beutiful pictures sent to me by my brother in law Mr. Gopal Jalan, I feel that I must get a ticket immideately.
Read ALL the comments - I couldn't add more to this beautiful City.
Stayed in the Isle of Dogs last year - beside the Thames /
A Memory will shine for the rest of my living life
Thank You.

Proud to call it home.
They are wonderfull..........You took all my favourits place in London
Занимательная и интересная статья у вас. В отличие от большинства остальных подобных минимум воды! :)
Simply breathtaking images! Insightful technical and visual artistry. I am amazed that the gyroscopic equipment can sufficiently dampen vibration.

Greetings from Colombia.
Never been to London, always wanted to go there - now ALL THE MORE!
Beautiful pics!
London is indeed beautiful. A cosmopolitan city that welcomes everyone, no matter what. Jason's pictures show that so well.
I am proud to have been born and brought up there, have been out of the city for twelve years now, and apart from the horrendous driving, never tire of it.

I discovered this site with these fantastic photos of London about a year ago and have sent it to almost everybody I know. I've been wanting to go to London all my life, and this makes me want to go even more. I will do it before I croak!!! Thanks for a beautiful website.
I besen there 7 years now i'm missing london so much and wants to come back
Facinating. The reality however is not.
Come on you guys, stop looking through rose tinted glasses ; living in London (unless you are in the top 10% wealth group) is very expensive, and the social engineering in the UK over the years has created a low wage micro economy in the Greater London area. Outside its Touristy Bits, London is an overcrowded, dirty, congested, and a polluted City, which is full of descrimination, crime, drugs, abusement, et al. However ; I guess you can fit this discription to most large cities in the world today.
Also ; these pictures show the amount of energy that can apparently be consumed by a major city without any environmental or social responsibility. Wonder what the Carbo Footprint is Mr Lord Major ( Boris Johnson ). When the power fails, and the Generation Companies ( most owned by overseas corporations ) want to reduce their operating costs for their shareholders ( also
mostly overseas ), the Power generators and UK Gov ask the domestic residents to cut back on their consumption, and go without this and that, whilst the commercial interest lights and signs glow brightly. Go figure.
Richard - Babyboomer - Ex UK - Now living in Auckland, NZ ( which unfortuanately is going in the same direction, for the same commercial interests and Centrl Gov Economic Model ) . Shame.
I lived in and hated the underground and the suffocating weather but the city is beautiful and friendly.I would like to see Paris ,San Francisco and other cities photos.Thank you Jason for these photos. They make me eager to see London again.
very nice i m comin there
amazing, I love that city. wonderful photos.
These are great photos. I love the City, its not perfect like any City but no where in this world is.
I am a flight Attendant have been for 7 years, I have seen the world and some amazing Cities. No where compares to London for Theatre, a night out, walking around and taking in the buildings and sights, I love it.
Coolest city in the world =)
Awesome photos, there only two weeks ago, for a few days to visit family back home, 23 years in Northern Ireland now.
Its amazing to see tower of london sitting there over thousand years almost. How they could never of imagined to see a picture from the sky and there mighty castle looking so small.
Very nice! Not sure what the red team is doing at an empty Chelsea stadium. I wish London was really this nice all year around. The problem is that it rains so much and it is hard to believe it can be this beautiful.
brillant!!
COOOOL!!!!!!!!!
Spectacular pictures, as a Londoner it makes me really proud to live in such a beautiful city, but doesn't anyone find in strange that every single light in every single building is on, Maybe they have been photo shopped for effect or we are really screwing up the environment
I was looking up some pixs to see how London looked during the blitz and ran across these wow it is just amazing how strong and beautiful London became. congratulation son your comeback from such a tragedy. I visited Londond in 2007 and had a wonderful time with its history and beauty.

The old song comes to mind: "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I love London so..." these photographs validate my feelings. After 50 years away, I still get homesick.
Can almost see where I live on one of the photos of the Isle of Dogs. I love living and working in London, it's a great city even if it does have its down side but what large city doesn't? Well worth a visit if you can.
