Sailing, around the world
Last December the maxi yacht "Wild Oats XI" won the 2008 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, sailing 630 nautical miles (1,170 km) in one day, 20 hours and 34 minutes. The Volvo Ocean Race, a 10-leg round-the-world race started in October and will continue until June. The Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009 will start in April, and training sessions are now underway. Sailing as a modern and historic undertaking is alive and well around the world, here are a few photos of sailing events from the past year. (30 photos total)

The 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, Covering 10 legs and 36,995 nautical miles, started Oct. 11 in Alicante and is scheduled to end in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 27, 2009. (AP Photo/Alberto Saiz) #

Richard Branson's boat "Virgin Money" sails in the ocean after departing New York, in an attempt to break the transatlantic mono-hull sailing record, October 22, 2008. About 30 hours into the voyage, the crew started having problems and ripped the boat's main sail. Not long after that, the voyage was aborted. (REUTERS/Chip East) #

Australian supermaxi "Wild Oats XI", skippered by Mark Richards, is seen sailing past Tasman Island at sunrise as it approached the finish line of the 64th annual 628-nautical mile Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on December 28, 2008. "Wild Oats XI" won Australia's premier blue water classic for a record fourth consecutive year in an elapsed time of one day, 20 hours, 34 minutes and 14 seconds. (DANIEL FORSTER/AFP/Getty Images) #

Tall ships take part in the so-called Windjammerparade tall ship parade at the Kieler Woche sailing event on June 28, 2008 at the port of Kiel, northern Germany. Organisers of the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), one of the biggest sailing events in the world, expected more than three million visitors from 70 countries. (ROLAND MAGUNIA/AFP/Getty Images) #

United States Coast Guard cadets stand at parade rest atop the mast of the U.S. Coast Guard training vessel "Barque Eagle", on July 1, 2008 as the boat rounds West Point off Magnolia and nears Seattle. The boat was taken as a war prize from Germany after World War II and is the only sailing vessel in the U.S. maritime services. (AP Photo/Seattle Post-Intelligencer/Joshua Trujillo) #

The viking longship Sea Stallion of Glendalough sails through the Limfjorden in Northern Jutland on August 3, 2008 after its journey across the North Sea. The ship, a reconstruction of a 30 metre long warship built in Dublin in the viking age, was on its way back to the Viking Museum in the town of Roskilde where it built as a reconstruction of the Skuldelev 2, which was excavated in Roskilde Fjord fifty years ago. Research has established that the ship was originally built in Dublin by vikings in 1042. (HENNING BAGGER/AFP/Getty Images) #

Hurrah for wind power, Maya B., International Artist, 23 Jan. 2008, 15:30 pm
so beatiful i could smell and taste the sea air and join the rush of the boats while sitting in a small attic room in holland. congratulations to all those photographers and sailors who are making it possible.
The photographs are breath taking!
Would it be possible for me to enter Caliban my Cal 25 in the race
And does anyone have a 50 horse outboard i could borrow with lots of fuel capacity
WE PROMISE WE WON'T CHEAT
the photos are beautiful breathtaking
Great
I know now why I love the water so mutch you can almost feel natures spirit of the wind in these photos thank for sharing them with me.
I have always dreamt about "SAILING" on a boat. Your pictures made it seem like I was there!!! They are some beautiful pictures. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
I had no idea the picture of me firing on Hawaiian Chieftain would make it this far... These pics are awesome, really cements why I became a sailor to begin with.
The ship under the Flaubert bridge is the wonderful Italian "Amerigo Vespucci"
Hey Billy, were you the engineer on the Exy Johnson out of LAMI? If so, I sailed with you to Catalina with a SC group back in fall of 2007. If not, you're the spittin' image of another tall-ship Billy.
excellent.....................................

Wonderful. #23 shows the fleet going out, and near the left center, about 1/4 of the way down there appears to be a collision about to happen!
Fantastic work, makes me want to become a seaman or a pirate ;-)
The Mexican has different names on the bow and in the caption
Espetacular. O mundo que vivemos é belo. Vamos preservá-lo.
Wonderful pictures and very moving for an old sailor who has been away from the open sea for more than 60 years. It proves that, once in your blood, the sea never leaves it.
The comments are also heartwarming - only one of the last 100 (from NZ) being negative.
Not to nit-pick but I believe the outstanding quality of the presentation deserves a few minor (but, for int-picking searfarers, troubling) corrections in the captions as follows:
In the first photo, the “Tall Ship” described is not a ship but a schooner.
In 3 the “three-masted schooner” is ship-rigged
In 5 the “tall ships” are, from left to right, a brig and a barque
In 8, the “ship” is a schooner
In 12, it’s well that you didn’t classify Tom Perkins’ vessel anything other than “a clipper sailing luxury yacht”. It certainly doesn’t fit any other traditional classification.
In 20, the “tall ship Mercia”, is described as sailing into Brest harbor. To be sailing in, those sailors on the yards must have a lot of wind power because there appears to be nothing else unfurled in the rigging at this point.
Good show and thanks much.
In 1976 the tall ships came to Baltimore and the officers and crews of the tall ships, Eagle, Mir and Mircea came to my house for dinner. The medalion I have says U.S. Coast Guard Bark (with a K) Eagle, Operation Sail 1976.
Amazing pictures and dream scenarios. For photography and sailing lovers, this is a full meal!
How wonderful to see the Boston Globe include a gallery of sailing photography! These photos are a beautiful and unique selection from a year of amazing racing, record attempts, Tall Ship flotillas and more. Although I work with sailng photography on a daily basis (currently www.rolexmiamiocr.org), I have to say seeing these images one after another -- seemingly unrelated, yet so similar in spirit -- made my day! As one of a handful of folks in the world doing PR in the sailing world, it is incredibly fulfilling to see this kind of attention on sailing and the sea, especially from the Boston Globe. Thank you, thank you Alan Taylor!

"BEAUTIFUL" makes me wish I was out there on some ocean someplace and just "enjoying."
The picture #15.
The ship is the "Amerigo Vespucci", an Italian ship currently used as school ship for Marine training. Is the flagship of the Italian Military Marine.
Bye
The undertaking was an inspiration..to those of us who do not know the sea but can clearly be shown the beauty and grandeur of the ships and all it gives to the imagination, As always ,the combination of nature and all it inspires in mankind
results in a thing of beauty every time...........:Lou
I was awestruck by these pictures, absolutely wonderful!

Amazing pictures....
Response to 182:
In #5, the two ships, left to right, are a hemaphrodite brig (two-masted, foremast square rigged, aft rigged fore-and-aft) and a true brigantine (two-masted, both square rigged, no main course). A bark would have at least three masts with the mizzen only fore-and-aft rigged. A true brig is all square-rigged with a main course.
.
danmm!! I wish a was there with them js to watch the sunrise and the sunset.
Those pictures were really cool and i posted one on my reader i really like them :)

#5 The original "Lady Washington" was built on the North River in Scituate , MA and along with the "Columbia," also built on the North River, they were the first American built ships to round Cape Horn and reach the Pacific Northwest. "Columbia" eventually sailed around the world captained by Robert Gray

I spent a week sailing on a tall ship out of Camden Maine (Lewis R. French) and this web site brought back some great memories.

real cool pit my yacht will be there next i n 2018
Nice photos but I have one gripe. Four photos of Puma, in a page posted by Boston.com and not a single mention that Puma's home port is Boston, the boat was built in Rhode Island, the skipper is also from Rhode Island and the boat, and entire fleet, will be in Boston in early May. Further there will be an in-port race during the Boston stop. This is as home town a team as I've ever had to root for in all of the Whitbread/Volovo races I've followed. The racing has been tight, competitive and Puma is regularly near or at the front.
No. 7 - An interesting modern photo - it's the first time I have seen sunlight reflecting off sails (must be Mylar coated). An interesting shot.
Vielen Dank, Many thanks. The pictures are splendid. Memories.
These pic's. are out of this world. So full of life and adventure.
I just had to save them.
Thank you,
Good editing. Thank you.
Amazing collection!

I just reserved a boat with Freedom Boat Club - I'll have front row seats this year for the trip to Boston!
My thanks to all who put this series of photographs togather
Regarding #16, absolutely terrific shot, but leaves me wondering . . . how does one construct a replica of a mythological vessel?
Wonderful pics. Gets the juices going... Wish I was younger than I am to participate!
Ted Zellmer Jr. i,m pretty sure were cousins, think your grandfather(Fred Zellmer) was my dads brother(Gus),would like to know what family is left if possible??Thanks in advanace,Gus's daughter

Now, when we are ready to start from Athens to Sicily on May 1, these awesome pictures make me dream of our future sailing even more!
Absolutely gobsmacked! These photos are so infectious!
"James Craig" (#3, #27) at the start of the Sydney-Hobart race is from Sydney. She's 135 years old. She takes passengers out to sea once a fortnight, summer and winter. You're never too old, it's an unforgettable experience. I should know, I'm one of the spectators in the rigging.
Google "James Craig" to get the dates so you can plan your next trip to Sydney.
Every one of the pictures is gorgeous!
Alan!
I loved it so much, I made it into a slideshow with music. I hope you don't mind!
