Bushfires in Victoria, Australia

The state of Victoria in southern Australia has recently been hit with hundreds of bush fires during a record-breaking heatwave - temperatures well above 38°C (100°F). Unfortunately, these fires have proved to be the deadliest in Australian history, with at least 166 deaths reported so far. The fires mostly appear to have been started by lightning - however a few appear to have been arson, and are under investigation - entire towns being declared crime scenes. Twenty-four fires are still burning, and authorities warn that the death toll will likely rise. (36 photos total)

I live in one of the towns effected by the fires on Feb 7, thankfully we still have the town and most of the houses. It has taken me 5 weeks to be able to start to deal with this tragedy and to cry for the first time and yet our house and family are ok. I can only imagine how long it is going to take for those directly impacted who lost houses, loved ones and in some cases the whole community infrastructure. These people are a long way from being able to deal with the massive tragedy that that one day brought upon us.
It helps me to grieve and to recover when I read through your comments, b/c it helps to bring my feelings out. Thank you.

As an international Lion in Rotherham UK it saddened me to hear of so many deaths and so much damage. I am told that in the fire 3 Lions are known to have died and 4 are missing.I hope that the financial aid sent to you by the Lions although not helping with the grief being felt is at least of some financial help

i am 12 years of age and was born in australia, i think this is really really dreadful. i cant think how scary it would be to be in 1 of thes fires. if i stilll lived in australia i would we scared of going out just in case one started
and i cant belive some people actuly start bushfires, i think it is a dredful thing 2 do and i wouldnt be able to live with my self after woulds.
once i hered that when they were geting water from the sea they picked up a scoober diver, because with helicopters they get a big tub and fly it 2 the sea and pick water up and take it bake 2 the fire.

Hi Aussie, please believe me when I say that I feel for all of those victims of this most devesating of bush fires. One need to undersand the impact this has on the families and all residents, as well as the virtual rebuilding of a state.

I lived in Kinglake and see the devastation. I see the impact it has on lives - and now that media and support services have left the area - people are really struggling - even down to the basics of water, sewerage, heat and food. These people are still left with hardship - waiting for financial assistance from all the money raised for these communities - yet they still have to go through red tape - let alaone the the infrastructure of rebuilding/. What conditions are these people living under? Caravans - no toilets - no sewerage - dig a hole - no water - when's the next shower? - Carry onh in your day to day job to earn a living to pay the mortgage on a house that is not there - so - it goes on.

How much heartache

In the western USA, we suppressed forest fires for 100 years. This led to an unnatural buildup of fuel wood, and then gigantic fires. In the old days, the Indians burned the grasses under the trees every year, keeping the forest clean and fires small. Are the Australian fires a similar situation?

My heart and my prayers go out to each and every Australian. Not only those that have lost their homes, but to you as a people who have lost fellow country men. May God give you the courage and strength to rebuild your land. My prayer is for even the animals that died or are suffering from terrible burns. It was very hard to look at the pictures of devastation and tragedy. God bless you all.

i lived in kinglake until a month before the fires.. the house i lived was destroyed by a fire ball. my daughter and her family still live up there.. she has lost everything.both of us know of many people who died in the fires and so many many more that lost everything as well. i didn't know if my family was alive or dead for hours as the phones had gone down , then i got a text from my daughter to say her house had gone.. nothing else.it was frightening enough for me but the hell that those people went thru up in the village and surrounding areas is beyond belief. .people are closer now and talk more and are there more for each other.. good can come out of this and it will. time....................

Today April 16th, my son lost his future wife and four members of her team in the fire. They were due to rotate back to America on April 17th. They fought the fires for many months, giving all they had to help stop the fires. They died doing the work they loved. I offer up my prayers to their families, to my son and to all families that have lost their loved ones in the fire. May they find peace among the pain. May they fine hope somewhere in the despair. Some things we never understand. But we are all better people for having known them.

I've read that in some areas of the world that have dry season, natives used to have small controlled fires each year to burn dry bush, thereby preventing the buildup of fuel and preventing huge devastating fires. But now I have read that although Australia has bush fire season each year, that councils do not allow the clearing of dry bush or even cutting dry grass in some cases. They want nature to take care of the build-up of dry bush fuel, because environmentalists claim that for people to remove it is not natural or something. Then some other people said that if that was the case, then it makes a situation where disaster is only a matter of time. . I guess you could say they were warned. Any arsonist, should be charged with murder. But perhaps it is also the fault of bad decisions by councils and environmentaliists.

Very interesting and extremely empathising. I am very sorry to hear of those families and individuals that have been effected by the bushfires. I live SW of NSW and only hear and read about the devistating stories and consequences that the bushfires have had/having. As part of my HSC i have chosen to focus on families/people that have been effected by the bushfires as part of my individual research project. If anyone could help me with some primary information it would be very much appreciated, however if not it is very understandable.
Thankyou very much.

Research a disaster that has occurred in Australia or any other country. The disaster can either be natural or man-made. Use at least four different sources
During your research remember to focus your questions on the following:
• Who was involved? (Describe the people including religion)
• What happened? (details of the event, who responded etc)
• When did the disaster occur?
• Where was the disaster? (include a world map with the location shown)
• Why did the disaster happen? (Was it natural or man made?)
• How did people manage after the disaster, what effect did it have on the community? How were governments, aid organisations etc involved?
Also include any information that you may find interesting.

If pictures are worth a thousand words these photos are priceless as is your disaster site. But what is painfully obvious that the self named species calling itself mankind, issrespective of creed, belief , has never had the phone No. of God, has not got it now, and will never have it in the future. So why is the species that infects this planet running around killing each other in the belief of sitting on the right hand side of God, or greeted by numerous virgins. Congratulations to Alan Taylor for showing the evolution of the self named species is a slow and painful process of good ethical management toward each other. Will be visiting this site more often.

I just learned that my friend Michael
Real was killed in one of these fires. He and his friend had gone back into a house to get others who were still there. His friend, his friend's wife, their 6-year-old daughter, and Michael died.

Michael was a surveyor and a lover of history, and mentally & physically so tough that I can hardly believe that anything could have done him in.

It's happened before & it will happen again. The Royal Commission
[inquiry] has uncovered reams of ineptitude in the heirarchy of the fire fighting apparatus. An enormous shake-up is required. If nothing of real significance occurs, the fire victims will have died in vain. Now to the religionists. If God controls everything, why did he let these fires erupt?

I live in Southern California, U.S.A., and we are also currently suffering from several very serious wildfires, but what makes it much worse there is the terrible loss of lives. It's one thing to lose resources, such as forestlands, etc., but even losing one human being to these fires is such a terrible thing. My heart, as well as my prayers, go out to all the victims.

Just thought i would say that the house in number 32 is my house. we have a 200 ache farm, the only things we were able to save is what you can see there plus our dairy and 2 other sheds including a hay shed..... we consider ourselves very lucky to get away with that.

Wow! The photos brought to life a tradegy that mere words could have never explained. Living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (USA), the devastation reminded me of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who endured lost, pain, and suffering during this time and especially Sue Swan and her family in Victoria. To observe and be so close has had to have an effect on your lives as well.
God be with you. Paula

I have recently in a community essay in the San Diego Union Tribune written about a new method I am proposing to supplement present methods of fighting wildfires, of which we have had quite a few in California. You can pull up the whole article by going to SignOnSanDiego.com, and then going to September 13 issue. Briefly the idea is this: one should consider using catapults to hurl containers of water at the flames. One may think of firefighters as infantry, fire-fighting planes as airforce, so the catapults hurling water would be the artillery.
