Carnival

It is Carnival Season in many countries around the world with a Roman Catholic heritage. Celebrations and parades put on just prior to the observance of Lent. Tomorrow will be the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but the past couple of weeks have seen parades and celebrations throughout Europe, the Caribbean and South America - notably Venice, Italy and Brazil. Collected here are just a glimpse of some of the elaborate celebrations of this Carnival season. (40 photos total)

I am brazilian, and the carnival here is indeed very beautiful! I live in Sao Paulo, and I think the carnival is, in both cities, breathtaking :)
Come and see the carnival in person if you ever get a chance, its so full of joy that you cant help but to be affected! :D
And you are not going to get mugged or murdered if you go to Rio, as Carlos Alberto Silva e Souza said. That's bull. You just have to stay away from dangerous places... basic rule that goes for pretty much the whole world!

These pictures are so beautiful. I would love to be there one day. It's magical and breath taking.

One thing that I don't quite understand though....it's the obsession with women's breast and nudity in general in many of the comments. I am from the U.S. but I did live in Spain as well and had the opportunity to see Carnival several times, plus numerous other celebrations. Also, I lived on the beach in Ibiza. So I had plenty of "naked bodies" around to see and after a while it really became no big deal. It's only a big deal if you think that certain body parts are evil or if you only see a sexual organ when seeing those parts.....For those "uptight" U.S. Americans.....Get a grip and a clue! Any part of the human body can be used for sexual pleasure and those "other" parts aren't just used for sex. Get your minds out of the gutter, get off of your self-rightous pedastels and accept the fact that not everyone in the world views the body the way you do. Many cultures don't look at the body as something "dirty" or "naughty"...quite the opposite actually.....

All these photos are fabulous! A complete joy to view. Wish I could see these events in person.
In response to "Jonas" #160...and his comments on photo 35 and the "Warning" -- I don't think Americans have "fears" about nudity, I think we've all been cowed for so many years as not to do, or say anything which might offend someone else. The "fear" is not of nudity, read the "Warning", it says "possibly objectionable" -- the fear comes from not wanting to offend anyone's tender sensibilities. Yes, some of us do need to grow up.
Still, great photos, and looks like a hell of a party!

I'm Brazilian, from Rio de Janeiro and decided take a diferent place to go this year...
I went to Recife and Olinda, and after all, I must say... It's PERFECT, just like in Rio... and other thing that I've discovered was the fact that this Country is blessed by God due the diferences between the diferent places on it... diferent people, diferent cultures... that makes, together, the gigantisc culture that our people are...
Tha gigantic culture know as... BRASIL.
Not only beaches, forests and naked woman... but all an continental country, full of history, problems, love, dificulty... but above all... One Soul.

Colorful and vibrant photos. Thank you & happy festive season! My question for kind and good natured Brazilian people: With all due respect why so much of evil-looking mascots and masks are manifested and embodied into the festive moods? I find these not to be the best representations of humanity and human nature. Perhaps I'm missing some points.

The Brazilian Carnival is surely a well and great known cultural manifestation, but I can assure you is not enjoyed by all brazilians. The south and inner regions of the country do not have a strong carnival tradition like Rio and Sao Paulo does, people just prefer to travel and relax in those times. Actually, many people do not give a damn to carnival....LOL...

In response to # 283,
You dont know, but , every year, the song, the dance, the whole performance of a particular samba school is around a theme, they can be trying to call attention to some sad event, evil event, recalling a story, and that is another reason why people like you, should go and learn about different cultures. Try to read a little bit more, about carnaval history, you will be surprised about this festival that occurs all over the world, but in Brazil, there is a little bit more into the whole celebration, go over there, you will not regret. I promisse

The writing on the face of No. 09 is not the "Pai Nosso" (Lord's Prayer) - it's the "Ave Maria" in Portuguese. And I think it's a woman's face, not a man's. But that's debatable.

Did you know that most Carnivals in latin countries, derive from religious belief & celebrations, from which the "Auto de fe" carnivalesque celebration, was the most dreaded, the most inhumane and cruel, during the Holy Spanish Catholic Inquisition.

I think our carnival is VERY impressive and unless you haev been to trinidad carnival you cannot say BRazil is the best, you cannot compare...im sorry IM trini to the bone and will love my country's carnival....birthplace of steelband calypso....

Why no photos of the carnivals in New Orleans?
(or Mobile, Alabama, their "mardi gras" is even older than N.O., which is already hundreds of years old).
I have only been to Carnival in the south of Holland.
