Pirates of Somalia
Somali pirates continue their attacks against international ships in and around the Gulf of Aden, despite the deterrent of stepped-up international naval escorts and patrols - and the increased failure rate of their attacks. Under agreements with Somalia, the U.N, and each other, ships belonging to fifteen countries now patrol the area. Somali pirates - who have won themselves nearly $200 million in ransom since early 2008 - are being captured more frequently now, and handed over to authorities in Kenya, Yemen and Somalia for trial. Collected here are some recent photos of piracy off the coast of Somalia, and the international efforts to rein it in. (30 photos total)

It arrived in Mombasa amid a raging controversy over its cargo of battle tanks and ammunition. Suspected pirates wait to be moved at the port in Mombassa, Kenya, Tuesday, March 10, 2009, after they were handed over to Kenyan police by the German navy who arrested them off the coast of Somalia the previous week. The frequency of attacks has actually increased since last year: 31 reported were reported in January and February compared to 111 for the whole of 2008, but the pirates are finding it harder to seize vessels. the only thing we can say is let we beg a god and ask peace around world not only somalia if you know or not , you know what is goin on world + America every country has his on problem don just look somalia they are poor country and have poor poeple and we have in America millions of somalia t whois better hardworking men and women. please guys don think all somali are same
A 50-caliber up ye pirates' posterior always does the trick when they mess with the red, white and blue. Great job, NAVY! Now, let's change the attitude of those who do not think merchant ships should be armed. If these dummies want a piece of Uncle Sam, bring em on. We need a place for "live" target practice to keep our naval forces sharp. The next time these thugs come calling with their 40 HP Yamahas and sling shots, we need to change them from roosters to hens and then send them on to meet up with their 72 Black Eyed Virgins in heaven.
if you are having six meals a day, sleeping on king size bed with a full paece and safe world, but throwing stones to someone who have nothing, is that a fare?
let your brain functioning!
Welcome to the new world (with some bad neighborhoods) and the ones who idolize them.
These people aren't heroes - it's just far more easy and "productive" to rob and collect ransom than actually work. Somali people barely have even a government, they have huge human rights problems, they don't have industry, most people cannot read or write etc. Instead some warlords have _sold_ rights to other countries to dumb their wastes to their waters - that's pure creed combined with stupidity. When you've set yourself in position where the piracy is the easiest way out and try to gain sympathy when people who you try to rob defend themselves it's just unbelievable.
we should shun all criminality, wheather u are robbing under the banner of democracy ( america and co.) or robbing to survive ( the pirates).
It's economics 101. If western shippers continue to pay millions of dollars to people who kidnap their ships then there will be an ever increasing number of kidnapped ships. We are all paying the ransom in the form of increased shipping costs and thus increased costs of the goods that we buy.
GO NAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT A JOB, IT'S AN ADVENTURE. A criminal by any other name is a criminal. As for you persons whom support the pirates, hell move to Somalia and live with the scumbags, and see how long you would last. For good or bad the United States of America is still the greatest country on the planet. How many of you Pirate lovers have ever been in combat zone, not many I expect. When you have weapons pointed at you it's a whole new ballgame. Kill or be killed, the law of the jungle. Blast the Pirate SOB's back to the stone age. I did my duty in Vietnam. Door Gunner UH1 Huey, Ashua Valley 1969.
I hope that the problem will be solve by Somali Authority if helped by America
What is more disgusting than this whole pirate issue is the number of bleeding hearts that have left comments.Being a Canadian I would expect these type of attitudes coming from my fellow Canadians ......our Country would have sent letters to these bottom feeders expressing our displeasure with their actions.
These so called men deserve nothing less than to be treated as the lowest type of life form we have on this earth and be disposed of with no dignity.
Congatulations USA, job well done and keep up the sharp shooting.
DL
They scum bags finally gor what they deserved days ago... I'm not an Obama fan, but he earned a little respect in my book for authorizing the Navy SEALS operation. Great work.
THROW THEM OFF THE BOATS. FEED THE SHARK
If crews aren't allowed to defend their ships, where does that leave them besides completely helpless at sea? They should offer one warning shot across the bow of the attacking ship and then proceed to shoot anybody that comes within 50 feet of their vessels without question, plain and simple.
The United Nations has a treaty called the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The US and all of the western nations are members of this treaty. Piracy is clearly defined. Pircacy is an affront to international law and pirates may be killed anywhere at any time, so long as it is done on the High Seas or outside the jurisdictional sovereignty of a member nation. Therefore, we should immediately dispatch our Delta Force, SEALS, submariners, and Air Force to begin a thorough and systematic destruction of any and all pirates and pirate ships operating in the Horn of Africa.
wow
They have no idea of the western thinking.
The world is to small to segregate.
Life is cheap to them
Technology does not make them smarter
Whether religion, rockets, nuclear, gps, arms, human bombs and powrboats
All they are trying to do is get attention .. and they get it.
they are fullish
Wrong Jamal, Saudi tankers, and Asian tankers have been hijacked, but nice try--Western countries are to blame for these pirates!! Hahaha... proves how ignorant and lazy you are. Ignorant of course, but lazy, because i'm sure you blame other people for your own problems, but mainly because it is mentioned IN THIS VERY article (with corresponding pictures) about the Sirius Star oil tanker-a SAUDI OIL TANKER being hijacked. MORON
If you're willing to use death to pay your bills then death should be your demise. You make your own bed no matter who you are. They should stockpile all of the fuel for their yamaha motors and cruise on over to North or South America. I'm sure with a little determination I'll be paying for their healthcare, and education before all is said and done. If I were in their shoes I would expect to drop my life expectancy by at least 80% and I hope that it what happens. I can't speak for every country on the globe but I would like to send a few words of encouragement to my fellow legal americans. Grow some b*lls and get off you as*es! The freedom to even post something on the board was paid for with american blood.
THEY ARE LIKE RODENTS. I keep wandering why we put up with this foolishnes
in International waters. As someone suggested, we have an excellent selection
of different types of missiles to deal with each situation effectively.
I know the wuss Liberals would think this is the wrong method but do I care?
they should stop that somalia never be tired and they whole life they just going do something crazy i thing they should stop
If we can place three bullets so well then I say, "rock on". Let's finish the job. Put snipers on each vessel travelling these routes. If anyone attempts to board the ship we bust a cap in their heads and it's over. Why are we wasting so much time and energy on this when there is such a simple solution?
These so-called "pirates" are obviously uneducated illiterate young men who have made the worse possible decisions in their sordid situation. My guess is that their older leaders are the ones who need to be ferreted out and brought to justice. Then there will be no more of this terrible criminal activity.
People in Somali were dying for past 20 yrs for luck of government, unmployement, medicine and now we are talking about Piracy in that region. well, hello, no law and order over there Somalia.
Problem is bigger thn a Piracy is clearly.
man this is crazy......
Wow, reading all of those comments were something. But non of you really know what is driving these pirates with no life jackets and no mercy for no one. They are innocent themselves who wants to make some living out of few green notes. They are clueless and curious. You can see that these guys know nothing about the sea and its sailors. There are obivously gang leaders who recruite them, those men need to be stopped because they are playing with lives like cards.
I wish i can go to Somalia and kill all of the corrupted cowards who are destroying, starving children, woman and elders. and everyone else.
I think America can do something. These pirates don’t know what they are doing and most of them grew up civil war. They also don’t know how life is important. I believe pirates should be asked who is behind and if they say names that is the real problem.
Somalia is failed state and the country resources were abused such fishing resources by international fishing boats. when you don't have a job and you have nothing to loss then you don't care, so they don't care.

Come gather round me children, a story I will tell
Of Pretty Boy Floyd, an outlaw, Oklahoma knew him well
Was in the town of Shawnee on a Saturday afternoon
His wife beside him in the wagon as into town they rode
A deputy sheriff approached them in a manner rather rude
Using vulgar words of language and his wife she overheard
Well, Pretty Boy grabbed a long chain, and the deputy grabbed a gun
And in the fight that followed, he laid that deputy down
Then he took to the trees and rivers to lead a life of shame
Every crime in Oklahoma was added to his name
Yes he took to the trees and timbers on the Canada river shore
And the outlaw found a welcome at many a farmer's door
Yes, there's many a starving farmer, the same story told
How the outlaw paid their mortgage and saved their little home
Others tell about the stranger who came to beg a meal
And underneath the napkin left a thousand dollar bill
It was in Oklahoma City, it was on a Christmas day
Came a whole carload of groceries and a letter that did say
Well, you say that I'm an outlaw, and you say that I'm a thief
Here's a Christmas dinner for the families on relief
Well, as through the world I've rambled, I've seen lots of funny
men
Some rob you with a sixgun, some with a fountain pen
As through this world you ramble, as through this world you roam
You'll never see an outlaw drive a family from its home

I think the Samolian pirates are in it for the money. One pirate brags that his "take" was over one million dollars. Where there are no jobs available to the youth of their nation, they have taken up arms and are taking from those less fortunate. That being food set for starving countries. There are better ways for the youth to gain employment. I believe they are terrorist who prey on ships who cannot fend for themselves; capturing the ship and crew for ransom money. If they were pirating for their nation as some have said, they could have taken the food to feed their countrymen. Here is a good example of their selfishness and greed. Shoot them! as
It is possible we will have pirates or terrorist on our horizon once they learn to do it unnoticed and realize what they can do.
Congress will not act until the public becomes aware of the enormous threat that ballast systems provide for terrorist, pirates or foreign sea captains, who do not like our country, to use ships flying under foreign flags with foreign crewmen, to contaminate and pollute our waters. Until we demand protection by exposing this threat, lobbyist will push the senate to consider it a states rights issue. Virus and invasive s in water do not recognize the lines man has drawn on maps. Industry knows that log books and record keeping, are mere paper work that dose not prove procedures were followed. It is time protect our country and our waters by screening all problems of shipping offshore. Maybe if we were to build up our neglected Coast Guard to be capable of this mission we could create some jobs Sincerely
Don Mitchel
To all our military past, present and future I say Thank You. To anyone who idolizes the pirates I say go sail those waters but then you'd expect our brave men and women to come save your sorry butts. If these pirates cared so much about their country why aren't they helping others there instead of keeping the money, getting high and risking other Sovereign nations deciding to clean out the whole rats nest. Where doo they think the country will be then? Oh but wait they don't give a rats *** as long as they can steal, terrify, and get HIGH. I say blow them out of the water before they board another ship.
Sorry to say I did time In Somolia. These people taking over the ships for ransom are not poor starving people. They are the same thugs stealing the food from their starving country men. Somolia will never be a descent country unless all of these thugs are killed. This has been going on for decades and the government cannot handle these people.
Again just to reiterate they are not poor starving people they are cowards that prey on the weak and easy like their starving brothers and then profiet from it.
Wow! After reading some of the comments regarding suggested treatment of the Somali Pirates, most of the readers visiting Boston.com affirm my belief that America have some really bigoted and evil minded people living within her borders. Most of the comments ooze bigotry, xenophobia and ignorance. I abhor what the Pirates are doing but denying any human being due process under the law is never good, especially for a country who prides itself as being a country of laws. The response to lawlessness should never be lawlessness but justce.
I am repulsed by some of the comments that suggest blasting the Pirates out of the water; cutting off their balls; or using them for target practice. I say those ideas are no less barbaric than the actions of the Somali Pirates. Stop the hate America and continue to hold high that bright and noble pledge of “justice for all.”
I think the piracy in issue in somalia is only a very small proplem for the people of somalia, whats happening in the country it self is a tragedy and lets ask our self what happen to the world.
I think its about time the world comes together and we strat helping the people of somalia and strat rebuilding the country ...... SOMALIA
These guys do not deserve any kind of legal process nor do they have any rights. Where do we get off playing God and the great Benefactor for criminals of the world. They are to blame for taking food from the starving. They are not any different than any other criminal who look out only for themselves. Look at the US prisons, we offer such great solutions to crime. I say feed them to the sharks, if they were innocent they wouldn't be out on the water robbing and killing.
What our kids are doing is a very big shame and risk for them. but unfortunatly this is the out come of our frastration. Could you help them in orther to get back there system of government. A poeple without government and system could do every thing like this. Anyway this is the beginning.
When they choose violence and threats they choose the consequences as well. They now plan to target and kill Americans so I say go get them. They are nothing more than thugs and bullies and will only understand a greater force willing to take the hard stand and shots. Go USA and Go France. To all the other countries out there quit rewarding the thugs. Criminal activity never stops when it is rewarded. And to the SEALS I say job well done, way to KATN.Thank You for being willing and able to do the hard stuff for the rest of us.
I was in Somalia, made dozens of blackhawk flights in what was a peace keeping mission and an effort to feed thousands of starving people. We did our best and were rewarded with armed conflict and US peacekeepers being beaten and dragged through the streets. Pirates were a problem then and have been so for many years.
Pirates should be repelled by what ever means necessary from water cannons to 50 cal. As for the rest, I don't mind helping war torn country develope but they have to be willing to stand up to the war lords and earn there independence vs resorting to ship robbing.
I believe a little over 225 years ago, there was this little ragtag bunch of colonies, that got tired of a bunch of oppressive leaders. This little bunch of colonist, got organised and did something about it. They revolted, threw out the present government and formed their own. "BY THE PEOPLE, & FOR THE PEOPLE" let the Somali people take care of there own problems, but when they attack unarmed ships, it becomes the problem of the country of orgin of the ship. Look at history, during the first few years of WW II, ships couldn't cross the Atlantic Ocean, for fear of being sunk by Nazi U-Boats. Britian & the US said, no more of this. They started useing armed escorts and by 1943 the Nazi U-Boat force was all but gone. Do a little organization and form armed convoys, while in these dangerous waters. Safety in numbers. If one of these pirate vessels even get
close, blow it out of the water and feed the fish, that would put a damper on these illegal activites. The pirates say, they are going to target US & French ships, and slaughter the crews. I don't think they know the power of the US or French Navy. One United States Guided Missle Crusier, could unleash a living hell on anyone whom dared mess with it. You kill one US citizen, whe kill one pirate stronghold. It wouldn't take long for them to get the message. I have heard that their just kids, Bulls@@T. I have a 18 year nephew who is in Afganastain ( sorry if I spelled it wrong) and he knew fully well what he was getting into when he joined up. This thuganomics by the Somali pirates has to stop period.
Gone.
well if i were in charge, i would simply put the word out that these "pirates" as they like to be called, have two weeks to inform ALL of the people in the orginization that any small, un-permitted boat in the shipping channel will be shot at and sunk. two weeks is enough time to inform any and all pirates that are about to ship out or are already out there to come in, and hear the 'good news.' if they have a problem with it, its too bad, because they are commiting crime and are putting innocent crew members of the ships at risk.
OPERATION BLACKBEARD: Somalia is a backward and lawless territory inhabited by nine million of the poorest of the poor; there they stand on their long, long shores watching the wealth of the world floating by. It is understandable that they would want some of it, and that the greedy and desperate eventually would find it simple, easy and acceptable to pirate. Understanding the reason does not condone their behavior, does not lessen the crime or annul the punishment. Blackbeard, literally, became a royal nuisance and he was hunted down, and in 1718 his head hung at the bow of the sloop that caught up with him. Then and now, that is the perfect ending for the romantic adventures of any pirate.
Certainly the US is a religious country, but that does not mean that we should pander to criminals because they’re skinny, without soap and they want our toys. The territory of Somalia has been inhabited by the same tough skinny people for THOUSANDS of years, and they have survived on goat hair and oxygen very well. That’s their way and they are fine, they are adapted to their landscape and their culture is part of it. Our problem is that we refuse to accept that their culture is different, and that they don’t want to be like us; furthermore, they don’t need to be like us. Leave them alone and don’t turn them into beggars, either. Let’s be realistic, for a moment. We are humans and we are violent by nature, ask any member of a military force, any sweetheart in death row or any pirate, for that matter. It is silly to pretend that there would be the possibility of washing that out of our instincts. Only last year, the Israelis finally had enough of the Hamas rockets and kamikaze youth bombers… Ah, but all is quiet now. A spanking once in a while works wonders, the Somalis need their diminutive glutei minimum paddled nicely, too, because their pirates are being a nuisance. Simple!
Truthfully, I am ashamed of the man we have chosen as our President, and I am angered by his choice for Secretary of State, for they are both weak. This Madam Secretary and this President are already pandering to a rag tag gang of pirates and putting us in a position of weakness and shame. The Secretary of State, on her televised statement told the world that the waters off Somalia are three times the size of Texas and implied that it’s impossible for us to deal with that. In other word she is admitting defeat and refusing to fight. Now, I’m in great fear that Mr. Obama will be sending them a stimulus package and welfare instead of blasting the pirates out of the water and their lairs. What is wrong with these officials! Have they forgotten we prevail in WWII when we fought enemies of the stature of Hitler and Rommel; I strongly recommend that the President and his Madam Secretary should at least rent the movie Patton, and learn something!
Why even detain them? I say let them swim for it. It is a risk they take by choosing to hijack. The little tiny hijack boat vs. a huge ship. It just doesn't seem possible in pictures for them to be able to board. I find myself questioning why they aren't just plowed over by the ship. I guess the only factor is the hijacker's weapons?
No: 326. Liberia doesn't own these ships. Liberia is the country of registration for thousands of merchant vessels, much like Panama is. Next time you see a cruise ship, check out where it's registered, usually states it on the stern right under the name.............
im still tring to figure out how a bunch of starved idiots in a rowboat with a few weapons and get onto a SHIP, its not a boat or a yacht, its a very big SHIP. if there is a ships crane on it pick up a container and drop it on there little rowboat. problem solved. pirates are dead.
this is the fault of the people they need to orangize a goverment police and firefighters and ect so the ground of somailia can show it's ture beauty
gracias vatos ai nos vemos los kiero mucho ta padre lo k isieron
Regardless of why (we all know it is greed, but ok, I will bite) the pirates are hijaking ships, they are doing it in international waters. Therefore, there are no rules or laws. If the ships were armed, this would stop. Case closed. It just makes sense. To all the people who feel that people from the US only believe in shooting or bombing, what you are overlooking is that the only people who are armed in these situations are the Somalis. So I guess that is how ALL Somalis live their life and guns are what ALL Somalis carry, according to your diluted thinking. And, by the way, I live in the U.S., and I do not know one person who owns a gun. And a know A LOT of people. Guess you really don't know anything about us, do you?
These pirates have been around for years, they have hijacked SHIPS from alot of different countries. They are now getting all this attention because they attacked Americans. Killing these pirates is not going to deter piracy from happening again and again, what I asked myself is , who is benefitting from these pirates, obviously someone who has more power and money is helping them and sending them to hijack Ships? Those are the ones that should be arrested, they hire young men with no jobs and no hopes of making any honest money in a lawless country. When you can't feed yourself or your family, anything is possible
they are stupid. Do you think you could go up against 8 countries and their navies.I do not know what those pirates could have been thinking. OK you got some ransom you should have left it alone and continued life. Greed takes everyone out
and no one thinks of the consequences. Now they say they are not scared of the
Americans they should be. They got just a little taste of those Navy Seals if they
continue they need a full taste of them all the seals, french commandos and all the
other navies instead of letting thembuild up reinforcements. They waited 5 days to release that captain. I would have stormed the boat sooner. We need to deal with pr
The 7th Commandment is pretty clear ... THOU SHALL NOT STEAL. Period.
My only question is: If these "pirates" have all the money they got from all those ransoms - why do they look like they dont get enough food for a good meal. There is more to the story here than those few poor men who are risking their lives as pirates. Yes what they are doing is definitely wrong, but I don't think they are behind it and killing them is not the answer. There is a bigger lord or lords sitting safely on a lot of money somewhere (most likely not even in Somalia). We need to dive deeper in the seas to find the answers.
I wonder who is getting the ransom money ? The weapons they are using are worn and rusted. They look underfed and ragged. Apparently, their not getting it. The ships should be armed with trained security personal. It's a lot cheaper then paying out millions of dollars to these thieves, and would deter future pirates.
the hypocritic world raises its ugly head now because the somali problem has spill over, but before this they turn a blind eye to the suffering of the somali people
and done nothing to help us but to put fuel on the fire by selling guns to warlords and gangs drug dealers so they can profit from the war industry.well whats goes around comes around.this pirate thing will only get worse and the solution lies in helping the new somali government in a positive way because the problem is not in the sea but its on land thats where it needs to be tackled and only somalis can do this.
First off, the use of or participating with the international community (UN) nevers seems to work as intended. The U.S. needs to protect it's own vessels and quit changing everyone else's diapers.
Secondly, any pirate activity discovered or displayed outside of any countries national waters, in other words within international waters, has to be addressed with lethal force. This force should only be wielded by miltary forces, not the ships crew's themselves. Arming the ships crew's could cause an escalation of the types weapon's used or tactics of the pirates.
Instead of parachuting ransom packages of money onto the pirate ships, how about parachuting filled body bags onto the pirate camps.
Third point. Make it crystal clear that any U.S. flagged ship captured for ransom, is an open invitation to have your home base attacked by any and all mean's available (any country they make home).
Forth and final point. Quit making excuses for, or coming up with explanations as to why these pirates even exist. They exist, so deal with it. They (the pirates) know it's a risky way to make a living, if some of them get whacked, so be it. We (the U.S.) need to let them know that the only thing we'll pay with is lead.
T
Couple hundred years ago they would be hung from the yardarm for all to see.
What a bunch of BS this country gets from all the disadvantaged in the world. We are dumping and stealing?? Yeh right. We dump untold billions throughout the world to help the helpless. We now steal from the rich to give to the 'poor'. Guess they got that right. Trace the frigin ransom and deal with the recipients accordingly.
I think that we should try and control the pirates and make them surrender so we can control them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As we know ,the world is watching this issue ,but i want let you know that the best way to stop this is Somalia must get government, other way sit will continue forever ,because if you want stop something like that, for sure you need to think many sides ,and always it is good for you to be optimistic , we can solve this problem if we make Somali government, why because they take the responsible y for that,
they will take care what is going on their sea ,so in my opinion it is not easy to stop like this happen with out government ,people are mean why you worry about the just pirates you need to worry about the country other ways this problem will cameback over and over but as i said if we try to be optimistic we can solve thanks tthaothers
Piracy is wrong !! Period. Holding innocent people for ransom is as killing innocent people too. Now solution is exactly what Somaliland ( withdrawn State from Somali - Unity 1991, formerly British Somaliland, gorverned by the rule of law) did to those Somalia Pirates and Terrorists, they periodically captured them long before the French,American and other Europeans and prosecuted to the maximum sentence of Somaliland Law. Now because of lack of International recognition the world community see Somaliland as non-existent after the people of Somaliland achieve lots of successad on terrorism and piracy where many had failed.
these people dont look like more than a bunch of poor native workers.
The words of one pirate from that lost age - a young British man called William Scott - should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: "What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirating to live." In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.
Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."nothing
I feel sorry for the people from Somalia...to some extent I don't blame them for becoming pirates...it's almost like they didn't have a chioce...America should have mercy on them!
Have mercy?..why should we? They are just going to go back and keep hijacking and terrorizing other vessels. These hoodlums should have to pay a price for their deeds. Perhaps like in middle east cultures, they should get their hands or foot cut off so they will learn a lesson.
The obvious real winner here is the Western Media. People have gotten bored with terrorists. But pirates. That's new!! That's hot baby!! That sells advertisements. How come all those pirates and hostages are smiling for the pics. Because they're media stars now. Soon you are going to have really fun movies and video games to go along with the magazine, tv, and internet articles. So don't worry, be happy.
I agree with Mark comment
these pirates are wicked ugly. and itmakes me unhappy.
If these pirates knew that (1) No ransom will ever be paid and (2) they will be executed on the spot when captured, this will go a long way to stopping this nonsense. Some cajones are in order, when dealing with these animals !
These pirates don't look anything like Johnny Dep. But I say this:
"Hoist the Jolly Roger!"
The best way to solve Pirates issue to declare immediate shooting on the spot. Handover to another authority is the biggest mistake because all authorities srounding that region are highly correpted. As per the above statment few individuals collected $ 200 Mil since 2008 till date, therefore this figure is not small amount. Majority goes for correption and using other authority power.
If this Mafia hears their friends were shot on the spot, the rest will never go to the sea side even for swiming.
I found Hannah's comment to be very offensive, I am American and that is not "our solution to everything" that is not how all Americans are. It seems like you're the one who is short minded, maybe you shouldn't comment about people you obviously don't know anything about
Thanks
awesome pics...
TELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME THE DEVIL
Had you been born there, you'd never have developed the sense of morality you rage on about.
They live like dogs.
They are treated like dogs.
And thus, they act like dogs.
You could kill them like wild dogs that have packed together and attack anything that moves for food . . . But they are PEOPLE ... Like you, like me.
You expect them to have some respect? Show them what respect means first.
Respect life. They know nothing of the things you love, and thus, can't really love them like you do. Don't hate them for it.
IT IS TRUE, AMERICA IS THE MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
What about using some of the garbage you feed the world with your cinema? "With great power comes great responsibility" . . Isn't that uncle Ben's catch phrase? Aren't your great fantasy heroes supposed to be the banner bearers of the American way?
Then help this people . . . You can beat a famished dog so that it fears you, but that won't stop it's life from being miserable until his last breath.
to #378 they are mostly muslim not christian
It is a subtle brand of post-modern Western racism that says the Somalias cannot control themselves when it comes to piracy, and are not responsible for their actions, because it is all the fault of the West.
In colonial times the racists were on the right. In our times the racists are on the left.
Most of you people that leave comments don't even know what you're talking about, I mean, you can't even use correct GRAMMAR. So how is anyone supposed to take you seriously ? !
Point is, the good guys are taking it slowly. If you go after the bad guys too fast, they may react terribly, leaving more damage. I'm definitely not saying the pirates are doing good, because they aren't, but sitting here leaving comments that make you sound like a redneck or an illiterate, isn't helping anyone.
Lol. Ok. Honestly, how is busting a few tiny pirate ships on the spot going to help anything? Its not like piracy is a get-up-and-go thing; it is organized. Each pirate ship caught has a “mother ship” so to say that sends them out. We can’t solve the problem if we just scratch the surface; we have to get to the root. Just like in the drug war. If we bust a few drug dealers on the street that wont do anything except make the big boss fined some one else. We have to get to the source. So in piracy busting a few people in boats will make the world “feel” safe, but in all actuality it will just get more involved. We have to get to the source and find who is leaking the information about the ships and its cargo and go right to the root so it won’t grow back.
I have been looking at the comments and in response to #24, you are stupid, point blank, go shove your head in a toilet. You too # 26. and for # 33, come on, if we did that then each country would be against each other. Say Somalia has a pirate ship escape and it captures a British officer and dresses him up as a pirate and then the ship comes across a French naval boat that sees just pirates and shoots them all. We then have Somalia mad about the death of THEIR criminals without a proper trial and England is mad because one of their officers is dead due to carelessness. Each country needs to work together and get over them selves; it’s as simple as that. Now, #36, they are smiling because they are proud to be what they are. They are pirating because they believe they are doing it for the good of the country, continent, whatnot. They know that even though they are captured they will most likely go free, and if not, piracy won’t stop with their death. More will be found and it will just keep going.
For # 48, a couple of armed men running around a ship don’t seem like much of a threat, but once you get them mad and they start shooting it doesn’t stop until they are dead. And they are crazy shooters; they shoot anything and everything. And if there are explosives on the boat I have no doubt that they will aim for the explosives, taking themselves out along with the boat they are on, their pirate boat, and any boat that may be within the immediate area. So we either capture them after they are away from the boat, or we start an innocent massacre. 4 captured or 30-some-odd plus ending up dead?
#91, I like you.
#107, watch out, evil can be deceiving.
And to all those who say that pirates are cool and what they do is misunderstood, HAH I will laugh one day when you get caught on a boat that is taken over by pirates. You think that they are just going to stay with merchant ships? It will progress to civilian ships as well some day.
Now. Has it ever occurred to those reading this that Somalia might just actually like their pirates??? You should look that up.
Wow, that seems pretty bad. I have to write a paper in History Class about Somalian Piracy.
this has to end, as this greatly affects global trade and not to mention seafarers security and safety.. to be honest with this matter i am deeply pist off with this pirates.. because they tried to run after us 2 times already good thing the joint forces of warships patrolling the area is vigilant to respond on every report of pirate attacks were able to pass safely... but for how long? it has to be contained for good..
who captured photograph #4?
Somalis are the victims here. There wasn't no piracy in Somalia until the European and American corporations began to transport the toxic chemical waste in their sea, thus destroying their fishing fields, which they were using for generations. That ofcourse fucked up their unstable economy and left no choice to small people other than to join the pirates to support their families. Also, the effects of the toxic waste in their area is still hurting the people, especially children, but who cares about that, right. Last point, Somalian pirates never killed a single person in their kidnaps, but that, in my opinion, is bound to change, thus leaving the fucking international armada an excuse for further impotent actions against pirates.
this was very interesting
SeeThis!
What incentive do these pirates have? Is it money or attention
Piracy is crime. They rob abduct rape and kill.
Problem is that tolerating abuse seems to be an international culture. “Negotiate while being raped. Don’t resist. And whatever you do, do not report the crime. Find ways to enjoy the rape.” No one is prepared to take any real action. In Australia I learned that if you do not resist then you condone the crime and in fact become an accomplice. I learned that we need to stand together as a community against abuse or the perpetrators will become tyrannical.
So if your country is a mess then you can vent your criminal urges on the whole world and have an orgy of bloodshed and theft.
Really dumb thinking that. And when such bleeding heart cloud cuckoo land thinkers get robbed, they are the first that want to sue everyone in sight. So pathetic. Why does anyone even give such drivel the time of day.
Try me on Pirate! You will pay with your life. I certainly will not let you take my property, rape my wife and daughters or take my life. You will pay.
Why dont they just raise the duty on rum?
Hai Robert, you really think America can deal with them.I don't think so.Just yesterday I heard a German ship released after paying the ransom.the world is feeding them milk and making them stronger. It is a shame that, with all the modern weapons these developed countries possess, they don't do anything.
I think every ships should be aware of their sailing because they dont know will it happen next.i afraid co'z i have seaman relative. For the navys good job not using any war objects i think your studying them before you attack...so that nobody will hurt if their is a hostages...Bring the pirates in the bars of jail and if they will not stop hijacking bring them in the sharks of aden thats all!! i
this ones for m casebeer. m casebeer i totally disagree with you because that snipering didnt help out on anything. pirates are just going to get more angry. its going to be white peoples fault if there is another golden age of piracy. and you know what i wanna be a pirate. so why dont youb come kick my ass!!! who knows maybe if i sniper your ass ill be king of the world then!!!
they are busters not hero they are cowards the pirate should not be given a rasom money dream money that is why they let went to navy see to capture innocent ships crews i think they should be treated to kill all coast somalia pirates then end of no more
Abdi Uk 26,august 2009
We should trace to the head of the snake and hit it with a big sick.
As always, some people tend to view issues only from one angle and dismiss
everything else. Yes, pirates are criminals who held people for
ransom. But, what about those who have been illegally fishing there
or dumping chemical waste. Aren't they criminals who are destroying
what people in that area depend on for survival. Now, do you see the
pattern -----> (cause and effect). We need to address this issue by
looking into all angles of this problem , otherwise it will never be
solved.
HI
yoo they are crazy
I only read the first few comments and found them to be ignorant at best. KILL THEM?! Exterminate them?! These Somali pirates ARE people we're just non- chalantly saying to kill and destroy. They ARE doing something wrong, BUT how else are they to feed they're families, some with more than 3 or 4 small children that depend ONLY on them, and yes they're violent antics. If YOU are tired of watching from the luxury of you're home, the atrocities of these Somali pirates doing ONLY what they know how to do, which is SURVIVE, then come up with a way to FEED these starving families and stop they're fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles, etc from resulting to hijacking these vessels. You are aware that they're chances of receiving an education so that they can get a 9-5 and provide for they're families the "proper way" is slim to none. Have a heart! Stop always resulting to more violence to solve our problems. Those men are poor and hungry, they are doing what they have to do....No different than any "civilized american" has ever done.
THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED .
You have to think that the worlds multi billion $$ fleet of warships vs. a few somali pirate speed boats..... and the somalis win more often then not, so why not scrap our entire naval fleet and contract out naval worldwide peacekeeping duties to somalia for a few $ a year?
Everyones a winner!
It should be stopped doing all these criminal activities .They should be
punished.
thank you.
They are crazy and need to be broght to justice
anyone who actually believes that these men deserve anything but the harshest punishment is ignorant. first of all, i'd like to see you say the same things when it's your family or friends that gets killed or hurt or affected in any way by these "pirates". i don't care if you think they had no other choice, of course they did. i've met people suffering from severe poverty and surrounded by crime during mission trips to mexico and travels to africa, and they are leading a perfectly good life and trying to make the best of what they have. these guys are just low-lifes that chose crime and hatred for the thrill and selfish benefit. end of story, these guys are worthless to the world.. they do more harm than good and they won't change.
