Human landscapes from above
Photographer Jason Hawkes returns to The Big Picture once more, this time venturing away from London (seen previously here and here). Recently, Hawkes has been carrying his Nikon D3 aboard helicopters around the world, hanging out the doorway and capturing landscapes - most somehow affected by humans - below. Today, he has shared with us 26 more of his favorite photos from above France, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, the UK and more - with links to Google maps where available. (26 photos total)

My favorite was the hot springs in Yellow Stone Park the colors and textures make it look like a water color painting.
And #24 wants me to play Rollercoaster Tycoon all over again :)
I can haz seafortz?
Not bad, but No 8 was unnecessary. If you wanted to show something about Colombia, you could've posted something like this:
http://www.virtualamericas.net/colombia/photos/landscape/rural/co0139.shtml
or this:

...but it's just easier to perpetuate the stereotype, right?
Gileee bener...............
Amazing Photos!!!! BRAVO!!!
It awaks my appetit to travel ... Thanks
Whaouuu and thank you.
Amazing... I cant believe compliments annoy people. If that is the case they shouldn't read the comments because obviously most of them are just going to be praises and thanks.
There should be one on the Nazca lines in Peru that would be a good addition.
They would also be great for tilt shift photography.
take a big breath mike.
Why are they dumping tomatoes in no. 12?
good lord
This is awesome.
Mint photos!
I think there is a gopher hole in my back yard if any of you earth worshipers want to give it to your mother. Just a heads up though, sometimes snakes decide to live in there (and get a snack at the same time)
engrossing.
To Jennifer 57, about photo #25.
I agree about New England, but development in Italy would make you envy those boring, uniform Nevada housing plots.
Wow, what a STUNNING collection, now I'm going to look at them on my big monitor, my laptop does not do these justice!
How wonderful if must be to travel the world and be albe to take such beautiful interesting pictures. Thanks you for sharing you wonderful talent.
Pic #1. I used to live at Upper Heyford when I was a kid and can remember F-111's taking off from that same runway. Now it's a parking lot !
After seeing it all, I am happy I live in Alaska where there is still open space, lol
oh wow...so beautiful
This is pretty cool. specially it link to Google Map!
Las fotos estan muy bonitas y maravillosas, algo impresionantes. gracias.
Le foto sono bellissime, inquietanti quelle dove pesante è la mano dell'uomo. Complimenti!!!
Jason is a very talented photographer - loved his night aerials of London earlier last year. He is fortunate to have been to many of these places and he does an amazing job of taking great photos of more normal places. I would like to see his aerials of really amazing places like Petra, Easter Island, Angkor Wat, Cappadocia Turkey, the 300 foot dunes of Nambia, Mount Everest, the Wildebeest miragtion in the Serengeti. I was at a site earlier called The Coolest Places in the World at www.CoolestPlaces.net where they had lots of these places but not any aerials. If he combines his photos with these places, I bet he would find many new fans.
The world is very different from above , Amazing and Lovely
Those tomatoes make me want to take of my shoes and make some pasta sauce. Thanks for giving me the small mental stimulation that keeps me young.
IT IS AWAESOME & AMAZING INDEED. WORTH THE LONG TIME IT TOOK TO DOWNLOAD.
And it's saddening that Boston Globe is about to go bankrupt. :``(

#20 Poppy fields in france? Afghanistan and Pakistan are closed?
amazing , as usual !!
Very, very nice, fantastic and great photos.
Thanks.
Incrível, essas fotos demonstram realmente o quanto são belas as fotografias! Abs e Parabéns! J.G.Silva
For the dragon-like-tomatoes-or-supposed-so of #12, I'd rather vote for apples (they grow more of them in the Durance area, and the colors are not very reassuring for tomatoes aren't they?).
Yes, it's a huge waste of food, caused to simplify a bit by market failures.
These pictures shows us the coloured sight of the earth, but we are high over the bad side of it.
moving set of photos, global, wow.
and thanks.
Impresionantes.
FANTASTICO
Wonderful shots!
Number 21, totaly awsome.
These photos are very good, fantastic!
These photos are very good, fantastic!
the tomatoes are all thrown away to keep the price stablity on the markets. sounds absurd and perverted, but that's the way it is. This happens all over the countries that have surplus production and are bound to this sort of economic system whilst others are starving simply because they are poor and don't have cash to come up with... sick sad world
These are seriously amazing pictures! I'm infatuated by the simplicity of some of these
The Maunsell Sea Forts always catch my eye. I think those might make a good supervillain lair. *wrings hands together*
Great work man!
My Planet rocks!!
Wow. Simply wow.
Great collection!
whoooa, amazing!
all the pictures were very beautiful they are the best of all i was know
all the pictures were very beautiful they are the best of all i was know
Great collection, as always
really wonderful pictures
best of the best
#14. This picture does an excellent job of communicating one of the most basic mental processes people make - getting from one place to another. Though this directional framework can get rather cumbersome if left to poor planning, it definitely reflects human desires at its core - "Get me there fast!.. I'll walk straight there." Intersections are clear, and allow the person almost always have sense they are at least traveling the right general direction even if their current path is temporarily off course.
I would totally NOT want to carry groceries up the stairs in #5!! :oD
Iz in yer seafortz, defendin yer islandz.
There are some great patterns in there! I was lucky enough to take some aerial photography this week in a r44 helicopter, here is a few shots that I took:

Amazing!!!
Who has copyright, the author of this work or google maps photographer?

Why are people still building in Las Vegas when the town and area is severely running out of water??? Picture 25 looks like "Suburban Hell of identikit homes". Yuk....
las vegas is an interesting city but a house without garden that is sad .

All the photos are just like a miracle...
I'm so impressed for The YellowStone Picture.
It looks like a Watercolor Paintings from GOD to Nature, as a present.
Thanks Jason, you are the best and very talented photographer in the World.

I wan`t see more pics, its amazing, great job.
Hahahaha love that altimeter is not talentmeter. But it would be nice to afford a plane.
Wow, love it. Like the photography of Ed Burtynsky. Check out the documentary "Manufactured Landscapes":
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0832903/
#12 Why dont they use it to make food for starvingpeople in the third world, they are not likely to buy Heinz ketchup or sundried tomatoes for premiumprices anyway. It really gives me a bad feeling
Great pictures as always!
Love Hyde Park & The Tomatos. The Apartments & Red SUVs are just Crazy! The Grand Prismatic Spring... Just WOW!
Caralludas
hei its very interesting and so cool :))))
Maravillosas tus fotos ....
@ #120, "W" (ashamed to leave his real name)
Where are you? Let's see just how "disgusting" and "tarnished" YOU are!
There always has to be a "big-mouthed nobody troll" that wants to ruin a beautiful thing like this with the garbage from his mouth.
ALL the pictures are beautiful!
Thanks to all who are and were responsible.
Wonderfull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#131, Lucas was actually inspired by cargo container loaders at the Port of Oakland

@49 You're a hilarious idiot, Mike! :D Thanks for making me smile.
The huge waste of tomatoes saddens me. Why can't they give them to someone who needs them???
Bravo for another great job - great mix of photos to please one's eye. The beauty of Yellowstone was my fav.
It is good
Wow it was fun thanks
Grandeur, beauty, sublime, intricate, and wonderful colors. What else could one ask for? Spectacular. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Brutal pincushion distortion in #5 though. I can't enjoy the shot because of it.

Brilliant Photographer--took my breath away
Amazing!!!!!!!
Dear Sir,
I would like your permission to include a small picture of your photo "Looking Down on the Chrysler Building" in my children's story about a chipmunk who strays on to a space shuttle. He is returning to earth, is looking out of the shuttle, and wondering whether to jump out and return home.
Strategic Books have agreed to publish it.
EXCELENTES IMÀGENES¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
