The L'Aquila earthquake

Early Monday morning, central Italy was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. The 2009 L'Aquila earthquake caused serious damage to several medieval hill towns in the region, killing over 260 residents, injuring over 1,000 and leaving 28,000 homeless. Despite the dangers from aftershocks, the search for survivors continues, and will be maintained until Sunday, after which the daunting tasks of cleanup and reconstruction willl begin. Magnificent photos-thanks for sharing and the comment, too, by the photographer whose work appeared in National Geographic. It's always good to have another source with which to refer.
These photos reminded me of footage a friend of my uncle's shared, in the latter's home, of the volcanic eruption he filmed in Hawaiian Islands(don't recall year, but it was over 50 yrs ago). The former said the heat was so great they had to fly over a mile above the spewing debris-striking photos of strength and devastation.
People might be interested in websites which list and show photos of active volcanoes and list their attributes including last eruptions-fascinating

I grew up in L'Aquila during my teens and was there last year in August. It was a beautiful experience. I had not had the chance to appreciate its beauty for several years. My wife and I had just been driving through Tuscany and Emilia, yet Abruzzo was lovely. The people as well, of course.

Being with uncles, aunts and cousins was wonderful and peaceful.

I had a special experience in the Basilica of Collemaggio and vowed to go back again. It is now badly damaged, but we will go back I am sure. We are trying to help with fundraising, here in Adelaide.

PS. Photo No 17 is mislabelled. The photo is clearly in the central square (modern building is the central post office and the statue is part of a fountain, there are two in the square) and the church is more likely 'Anime Sante' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_del_Suffragio_(L'Aquila)

I visted L'Aquila twice... the last time was with my son. It's a very nice city so both my son and I are astounded by the devastation wrecked by the earthquake. I have relatives living in both L'Aquila and nearby San Pio della Camere and am glad they are alive. I hope that they can return to stronger, rebuilt houses very soon. Our thoughts are with them.

Lieve mensen in Italia,

To the brave and beloved people of this tragic event. Know my heart and soul are there with you. I was in L'Aquila 2 times in last 4 years. Last year there was a puppet show for the children in main square. I want to explain so that you will not think that God did this to His people. Earth's crust is moving beneath your feet b/c Earth is a dynamic planet. Tension builds up and eventually must be released. The area has many tectonic faults & is the reason for the earthquake. The Appen -nine Mntns. are undergoing extension. I'm a geologist in love with Italy & her people. Italian people are strong. You will build your lives again, better days will come!!!

AS A 79 YEAR OLD Cercone man whose ancestors i believe were a prominient family in Aquila and I believe still are[ whether they are prominient or not doesn't really matter does it]? my heart and emotions so call out to the Cercone's and everyone else in the devastated earthquake area . Why dear and mighty Lord would you allow such beautiful beautiful people that supposedly you created to suffer so? Do we really anger you that very much? Have we not suffered enough because of Adam and Eve? When are you going to reach out and stop the increasing maddness and chaos of our earthly world??

I was there that night, I experienced the earthquake. He was a devastating thing, I lost a dear friend. I have taken a great fear, a feeling that does not wish it on anyone. The noise of the earthquake was terrifying, the wall seemed to break, all trembling, all fell to the ground. has spent a month, I am sad in my heart. I studied at L'AQUILA, I loved L'AQUILA, now was not anything. My thoughts go to those who no longer live and to my dear friend NICOLA.

I cannot express the pain that I feel for the people of this region. Being Italian is not the reason I write - it is to reach out into the hearts of the people who lost loved ones- and who are coming to terms with the magnitude of this tragedy. Around the world we see so much devestation and yes- as a Christian I ask God many questions. I hold you all dear in my heart every man, woman and child. In your isolated times of grief and thought's may I just say that Ti amo molto....

My Mother and Father were from Abruzzi. If they were alive today-I would imagine how they would feel after seeing their birth place destroyed and the suffering that abounds in the region. I am their son and am old (83) but feel as if Abruzzi was my home though born in the US. My feelings run h igh and wish I were younger to aid in some way to help those in dire need. But infirmaty has crippled me and all I can do is suffer with them in silence. My Love and hope for the future of Abruzzi will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

May the grace of God be with them all, there, our thoughts and prayers are with them all, however man must help himself. I trust that goverments move swiftly to rebuild and accomodate, as the Italian summer will be quickly replaced with the cold of winter. I have family over the in L, Aquila and Arango, famiglia Pulsoni.
We in Australia offer ourselves to accomodate our relatives if the goverments will allow passage or sponsor loved ones in their time of need, because I fear that time will run out and rebuilding will take many years to come, Iam quite certain that this offer will be accomodated throughtout other parts of the world.

I am a descendent of the Castelli Family from the area, my Great Aunt "Lizzy" Castelli-Santarelli, was the postmistress in Tussio nearby. I understand that her adopted children and their children lived in L'Aquila. I do not as yet know your names, but know that I am seeking you out, and my heart is broken for your suffering and harm this earthquake has caused.

I plan to come to you this coming year, I will see what I can do to be of help when I do so!

My Love, prayers and blessings are with you, and all others who have endured this tragedy as well!

Rev. Michael David S. Severson :-)

..come una guerra vera, dove si muore veramente,e muoiono il luoghi dove abbiamo lasciato i ricordi. Come una vera guerra, ma dove l'avversario e' la nostra terra.
