The Volvo Ocean Race
The 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race has arrived in Boston Harbor. Boston is the 6th port city for the eight teams which will race around the globe for nine months over 37,000 nautical miles split into 10 legs. The ships they sail are Volvo Open 70 class racing yachts, 21.5 meters (70.5 feet) long, manned by a crew of 11. While the ships are in port, they hold in-port races as well as hosting events and entertainment for local residents. Tomorrow (Saturday, May 9th), the fleet will hold its in-port race in Boston Harbor, and later, on May 16th, they will depart for leg 7 of the race, to Galway, Ireland, concluding the race in St. Petersburg, Russia in late June. Oskar Kihlborg, team photographer for Ericsson Racing with nearly 15 years experience as a sailing photographer has been kind enough to share the following photos with us. (31 photos total)

20 and 26 - really great photography work!
Good pictures as always. Although with the state the world is in spending the time and money racing boats (in my opinion) could be better used elsewhere.
3-13-18----BETTER THEN NASCAR
#30 That's in order to understand owning a yacht. Actually sailing them is a lot more fun.
Great pics - this race is amazing.
It's too bad that the Boston media has largely ignored this event - i brought the whole family to Fan Pier last weekend and everyone (including 7 & 5 yr olds) had a ton of fun.
wow, again and again - thanks for sharing
Awesome photo's. Every time for Boston! I hope you peeps keep up the good work!
Génial!
La voile et la mer. Un duel!
Great! Awesome!
#26 is genuis!
Where are the boats docked while in Boston?
good eyes. great vision. such breathtaking beauty. thank you oskar for sharing your joys with us.
There are two races tomorrow at 1 pm and about 2:15. South of Nahant, East of Winthrop. See volvooceanracing.org, or the facebook group, I think it's something like volvooceanraceatfanpierboston.
I'm volunteering at the Volvo in Boston and was fortunate enough see the first 3 boats arrive. These guys are true athletes, no steriods!
Brazil allways look so beautiful in Big Picture.
Really made me feel the atmosphere there. Great shots.
I remember some years ago, during the Whitbread 'Round the World Race, a New Zealander said that it was like standing under a cold shower, tearing up $100 bills!
Good photies, a lot of effort went ito them.
cheers
Christ the Redeemer,Thank you !!!!
I used to race a 505. Same idea just a bit smaller. Awesome pictures.
Static pics but bring out the drama and the emotion involved so well.
It is an Ericsson report,
not a report on The Race
trop de la balle la puissance de la 13 : Pirates of the Caribbean
WOW!!! so lovely!!
WHAT COULD I SAY THE PEOPLE, THE RACE AND THE PICTURES IT IS AMAZING. GOOD LUCK 2 EVERY SOUL IN THE RACE AND THANK U BIG PICTURE.
WOW!!! Spettacolo!!!
These photo's are beautiful and truly amazing.
LOVE them ALL - so exciting.
We are volunteers at the Boston Volvo Race Camp and will make a video with these awesome photos together with some home video from the Pier.
We look forward to in the In-Port races this wknd and hope to get a chance to see the boats in the ater close up....and hope to get a glimse of the King of Sweden.
@13 No those are lightning rods. Which is logical when you get a better view of the scale of the statue compared to human size. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cristo_Redentor_Rio_de_Janeiro_4.jpg
Amazing photos--amazing race--amazing men!
Loved #9--
Number 26 is amazing!
Amazing photos !
to the editor :
Would it be possible to post the exif with the photos ? or at least lens and camera...?
Thanks a lot !
...................... amazing !!!! ......................... thanks :o)))))
Wow what a great photo, a brav man than me to be climbing that mast.
Great sit BTW, good luck in photo blog awards
Regards
Adrian

Simply perfect
Amazing photos, 25 is beautiful.
TY
Do people really climb the mast "to check for wind"? Never heard of that one before...
Nice angle on Sugar Loaf! Loved Rio, wish I could have been there to watch.
#71 By climbing the mast you can see where the breeze is coming through some distance away and adjust your course to take advantage of it.
Wonderful shots as always.
wow @ #26
Great! #26 is soooo "liquid"! :-)
@71 Yes they do. When the sea is calm you may want to climb higher and look where the wind stirs up the ocean and steer that way. Satellite weather data is not that usable on a local scale.
I wonder if they'll be dining in Roxbury, Dorchester or downtown Lowell after the Boston race? I mean is this anything but an extravagant luxury only less than 1% of the population can afford?
>an invitation to the upcoming launch of the Space Shuttle (STS-125) on Monday
Have a good holiday, enjoy the launch.
TAKE/BRING BACK SOME PICTURES!
Photo 26 is an easy type of photo to take - all you have to do is watch the water for interesting reflections. Photo 25 is not easy - that one took a lot of planning and a lot of luck. IMHO 25 is by far the most amazing photo in the batch.
TBP, enjoy your vacation. Next time, it would be super if you could get someone to guest post while you take some time off so we don't have to go through withdrawal!
Amazing photos, the Volvo Ocean Race and the Americas cup are both breathtaking sporting events.
I love your photos! How did you find out about this race? Leave it to you to find out about this unbelievable race! xoxo, Jacque
Please do the same for the Vendee Globe sailboats race
This makes me so ecstatic that it's sailing season again. Such amazing shots, it's making me jealous.
Thank you. Awesome photos.
@#66, Martin: Go to the photographer's web site (linked at the bottom of the gallery) for the photo info. These pictures were NOT taken by Globe photogs - they're by a photographer who is following the whole Volvo Ocean Race.
@#77, Rhoda: What's your point? This is a 9-month around the world race that goes through some of the most treacherous seas on the planet. The crews on these boats risk life and limb to compete... why should they go and eat in Roxbury or Dorchester?? Can't you just be glad that they came to Boston as their only North American port of call?
Yes 25 is the most elegant shot, but 31 best captures the scope of the accomplishment (I totally agree with saving it for last). These boats are small, the ocean is big, and the sailors are courageous. Some things haven't changed since Magellan, and that's good.
I agree with #58, even though the pictures are great, this seems more like an Ericsson advertising campaign than a Volvo Ocean Race report... a clever move by Ericsson to get free advertising.
To get things straight, maybe the title of this entry should be "Ericsson Racing in the Volvo Ocean Race".
fantastic
4# Torben Grael rulez!
Wow, amazing set as always, I especially like #3, #9 and #25
Awesome pictures!
I'm coming Volvo Ocean Race!
If it takes me twenty years, I'll be there!
And the Ocean will challenge all!
Sailing is expensive and racing anything, from bikes to pigeons is super expensive. I can't imagine the cost of sailboat racing. Must be ruinous.
Except for #9 and #26, rest are ultra boring.
Why "Russia" at the first photo write with a small letter? Are you Canadian hockey fan?
WOW! Incredible photos. Very artist yet true to sailing.
Thank you!
Your pictures are simply wonderful. I've sent the link to many and everyone tells me they loved the pics!
I think #22 is my favourite since I live in Rio and we hardly ever get a picture that has both the Sugar Loaf and the Corcovado/Christ, the Redeemer. Thanks a lot for that!
The last photo is killer....
Is this an ericsson's commercial?
I have seen a lot of good pictures of this competition with the others teams on it.
Hi , excellent photos, I am from India and I happy to see few photos from my native place …cochi…. Congratulation to all who workout for this rice and photography......
Joseph Antony
Kuwait.
adventurous and exciting human and camera eyes.great; keep going
I was looking forward to some of those shots (like on the front of Boston.com a couple of days ago) of the ships with a bokeh'd Boston skyline in the background ;(
Awesome pictures, Thank you for sharing them with us, cheers from Lebanon!
Who loves sailing or to be in this activity , we celebrate him / her. with this choice.
These boats are causing irreperable harm to the environment and the whales. Won't somebody think of the whales?
More awesome than the TransPac! Excellent photos! Great seafarers!
The Vikings would be jealous, despite their elegant wooden boats!
The photographers should receive prizes too! Bravo to all who participated.
stunning stuff...really liked 19...patrick o'brian would be proud.
This photographer has got incredible talent.
Is very beautiful nice,
In the shot with the scuba diver checking the keel, the torpedo shaped keel appears to be not aligned with the shadow of the boat above. Do these things swivel perhaps to reduce drag?
#26 looks rendered in 3d... has what seems to be artifacts of 3d rendering
#105, they did think of the whales when they had the exclusion zone coming into Boston. They had to go all the way around. Check it out on volvooceanrace.org.
superb pictures.
Such Amazing pictures! I l love Christ the Redeemer looking out over the fleet! Breath taking!
The love of the Earth, and its glory is only felt when sailing its oceans. I only wish is to had a dad who sailed. Started when i was 47 years young, racesailing, log 160 races and 4 international races. My captain made captain of the year for 2 years straight., and i do belive that the crew is part of the glory. Even tho we walk the plank many of times. He or she who thinks they know everthing, Go sail mother Earth.,youll learn even more, if she lets ya . May the sea watch over all sailors..
Beautiuful and unbelievable
Fantastic, just fantastic!!!
To everyone who is suspicious of this being Ericsson product placement:
These pictures were taken by the official team photographer for Team Ericsson. Click on his name and go to his website, he is an amazing photographer. However, It would be pretty difficult to be able to afford following a worldwide sailing race if somebody wasn't footing the bill.
Terrific photos, thanks!! What an event, if only Boston had promoted the event a bit more, but typical of the city... something this exciting comes to town and I can barely find anyone aware of the VOR. It's the rare to speak to someone in Boston who actually knows it's happening right in our own backyard. A once in a lifetime experience and I'm so glad I was able to visit many times. Good luck on Leg 7!!
Beautiful photos. Congratulations. Saúde e paz! Peace!

#3 should be a painting
Wow! Beautiful Pictures!! Just the composition and the depth of the pictures in relation to element of water are phenomenal!
Best picture collection I ever saw! Congrats...
Muito bom este Oskar. Excelente material.
ALAN, come back, we wait for more pictures !
fini les vacances,
end of holidays !
#3 - I see the light!!!
I just discovered "the big picture" - thank you for such an amazing column! The pictures are breathtaking, and the non-slidehow format is easy to navigate. Love it!
It's a shame that the Globe had no pictures of the Boston event. If a Kennedy showed up at the race event in Boston it would have been all over the paper.
Stunning collection of photos, one of the best for a while I think. Improved my day considerably.
Wonderful pictures- however why isn't the littleboy in #29 wearing a life jacket?
Great photos. Today we'll take this year's maiden cruise on Lake Superior in our '76 Columbia 26 and live our own pictures. Smaller, perhaps, but just as beautiful, and wet.
Damn good, but did Ericsson pay for the pictures to be taken?
Dear Sir,
Your pictures are first class. Can you tell me what camera and lens you use.
