Glastonbury 2009
Over the weekend, approximately 190,000 people made their way to Worthy Farm in western England to attend the 2009 Glastonbury Festival. Attendees came to see performances at what is billed as "Europe's largest open-air music festival" on many stages over four days - headliners included Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and a reunited Blur. Rainy weather did little to dampen the mood, as attendees enjoyed themselves in tent cities, concert performances, dance tents, and the surrounding countryside of Somerset, England. Collected here are a handful of images from this year's festival. (33 photos total)

Volunteer workers sort rubbish for recycling at the Glastonbury Festival recycling centre on June 29, 2009 in Glastonbury, England. Every year the festival employs a team of 1,200 volunteers - who work for four, six hour shifts for a festival ticket - to sort what can be up to 2,000 tons of rubbish generated during the festival. The recycling of all the cans, plates, cups, plastics and food waste left by the thousands of people started on Friday and lasts a week - but the complete clean-up of the festival site can take until August. STEVEN???
absolutley stunning collection of photos!
just beautiful, so professional
WOW_ the best photos of glasto i have ever seen...
awesome pics!
#21... you couldn't pay me enough to get that much mud on me. I'm always reminded that for the rest of the year it's a cattle farm and that's why the mud smells so bad. I spend the whole time while walking in muddy glasto times thinking "please don't fall, please don't fall, please don't fall"
Great photos, brings back memories. When I woke up on the Friday morning to the rain I thought "never again, this is the last time I want this" but by Monday I was keen for next year.
I was preparing to travel to the festival on 25th as rumours began to fly around the internet about the death of Michael Jackson...Your stunning lightening strike picture was taken around this time...........
É... realmente é o Sole!!!
These are beautiful pictures, i was there and the photographers capture the spirit and magic completely. I'd also totally agree with 103 Stop trying to bring people down! The organisers of the festival not only provide a great muscial experience but an educational one to. Artists perform for free and folks have been going for years because Glasto is well respected and well loved. Give it a go sometime you may like it!
Best photos I've seen of 09.. thanks. There could have been so many more though.. Springsteen playing with the Gaslight Anthem, Karen O's outfit, people dressed as bees, the flag "Glastonbury welcomes Spaniel Tap", Florence Welch climbing the lighting rig. What a fab weekend, can't wait til next year!
Amazing pictures of an amazing weekend!
For those of you who worry about the mud, don't! Last time I checked grass grows back....
Have a look at the farm on Google Earth to see how beautiful a place it is for the rest of the time :-) We really are lucky that the Eavis family choose to share it with us all each year.

Amazing pictures 2009 can't wait till 2010,2009 the best Glastonbury in many a year.
Regarding That last picture recycling the rubbish..has any one found a pair of "BLACK 120 Denier Opaque nylon Tights".....i took them off first day as it was too hot ,but left them in the grass.
That place was AMAZING! i was that girl in pic no.8 an it rockd realy good!!!! and yes...#50, i was wearing a mini skirt ;)
Wow - what a fantastic collection of photos which really capture the magical world that is Glastonbury! Having just returned I have spent a lot of time wishing I was still there!! The atmoshphere was amazing, everyone was friendly and happy - all the acts were fab (especially Tom Jones, Lily Allen and Blur...my highlights!!) I enjoyed every part of it - from the mad partying to the relaxing times spent wandering through the green and healing fields and chilling by the stone circle til the early hours! Can't wait til next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a great festival - I had never been before but thought it was quite something else...
Capoeira
thanks for these fab pics, I was there from the sunday before the festival until the wednesday after the festival (as i too worked for my ticket) and i left no trace! i left all my waste in the appropriate places! (there are glow-worms living in our field!) i wonder if we can buy bags of worthy farm compost next year?? Thank-you Micheal
An absolute beautiful festival - musically, visually, artistically. It is complete escapism from normal life and events like this always restore my faith that there are plenty of open minded good people around that know how to have a great time and have so much to give to others. Thanks Michael and all that gave their time to another great Glastonbury.
I am in the lightning photo with the pink shirt on YEY
Very enjoyable first Glastonbury! High standard and huge variety of acts. Stone circle magic. Good to see all the charitable causes supported. Beautiful, surreal experiences to be had in Trash City, Arcadia and Shangra La. Will definitely be going again! And yes the amount of litter dumped is a bit of a bummer, especially all those abandoned tents and beach chairs..... But don't label everyone with the same brush!
What was interesting to see was the wide range of ages there. I believe in the past, when the tickets sold out within the day, the age range was a lot older!!!
impresionante ese festival!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been going to Glastonbury every year since 1984 (not a boast - just that I have some perspective on how it has developed over the years). It is no longer the 'hippy' festival it once was - but then there really aren't many genuine hippies left around anyway (you may or may not be pleased about that). But Glastonbury has always been, and remains, a truly magical festival. As it has grown in size, it has also grown in its diversity (of music, art, theatre, circus and people) and in its wonderful wackiness. Like New York, you simply can't describe to anyone how amazing it is - you have to go there. These wonderful pictures capture just a hint of how astonishing this festival really is. Don't mock it, try it.
Fantastic Pictures, captures the festival well I think. For those who were not there and are commenting about the rubbish etc, this was my first Glasto, I am 52, I found there a human spirit that I thought had long gone. A wonderful place with wonderful people and 180,000 people left soem litter whiel they were dancing ... well theres a suprise?
For me Glasto 2009 will live forever in my head the Headliners to the small indi bands that I have never heard of but may do again to the lunacy of trash city, what a place. I would recommend it to anyone.
@187: Just coming!
What magnificent photos of a truly awesome festival.
And to all the haters - do us all a favour and please don't ever come. It's going to be hard enough to get a ticket for next year.
sent shivers down my spine-evocative photos for sure!!!! Just magic...I love the one of the couple kissing...
I missed it this year-gutted isn't the word, all my mates have been raving about it!!!!
ps-I think i read on someones comment (an american boy) put -" the english girls have got nice teeth!" Not all english people have 'snaggle' teeth!!!hahaha...come to the UK and sample some of our fantastic music and good teeth!!!hahaha
peace x
These are some of the best pictures I've seen, your link was posted on the facebook Glastonbury 2009 group, so glad as otherwise wouldn't have ever thought to look at an American site for Glast photos.
It is ashame about the litter, as other people have said on this site it's not everyone, if it was I can't imagine how bad it would be. If people could just pick their stuff up and carry it away to a bin it would make the organisers life much easier. Credit to those who collect the rubbish during the festival and spend weeks clearing the site up afterwards. I've seen them in force and it's impressive.
I think this whole festival is amazingly organised considering it's on an active farm and the vast amount of people they have turning up. It's the highlight of my summer and hope to be going for many more years to come!
Fabulous Pictures from a truly fabulous Glastonbury festival. i performed there in the circus fields as a stilt cyclist in glourious red and white stripes- 9yh pic down at http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/news/day-five-in-pictures ,
the glastonbury crowds were lovely as was the weather and everything!
AWESOME PICS, THANKS FOR POSTING THESE.. WISH I WAS THERE:)
I'm a young professional, white, chubby male with very limited hippie tendencies and loved my 4th Glastonbury. Those who don't go and slag it off, f*ck 'em!! I don't give a rat's arse if they miss out.
Lovely pics. Went all the way through the 90's, make me want to go next time I return back to my home country. Glastonbury has a special place in my heart and many fond memories
lo mejor que hay!...rocka sur....muuuuuy pronto! bsas argentina
Beautiful, WOnderful....its what music is all about
I'm also a Glastonbury vet with first memories from the late seventies. I was back for the first time since 1994. The festival still has the the same atmosphere and outlook it had in 1979. Sure, it's bigger and flashier, become security obsessed and has gone cheerfullly commercial just like everything else, but it still manages to stick two fingers up at the establishment in its own special way...
Wow an awesome set of photos!! Iv not been to glasto for 15 years..but MUST go back soon! :)
where's the toilet?????
Amazing pictures......
Fantastic photos, best i've seen, even better than the ones on the glasto site-- where i got this link from. We are lucky enough to live near Pilton, and have been going for years, those who are knocking it please come and have your minds changed - literally! Magical is not an exaggeration, tv coverage doesnt begin to show you what the festival is all about, which is the culture away from the main stages.
glastonbury is good for the soul
VERY NICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woow Number *200 Comment.!
thats not you. its my friend tilly dodd u tw*t.!
Jamie-lee ergh what a lier. kllllllllll!
They don't pick up their own garbage? Sounds like a great festival, but that shot of the field of litter at dawn says a lot.
Pack it out, people.
Springsteen brought his own security, what a difference that made. Security was stepped up 500% and everything was a threat. You could smell the fear and tension, and when someone in the crowd used a little lazer pen there were warnings throughout the back stage area and it was a constant awareness of an impending attack, as if it were possible or likely. They were heavy and over the top yes way over the top. Professional, yes and unnecessary too. It was such a difference in the way in which the UK and the USA handle the fear. Within the UK it is the authorities and traveling singers from America that live in fear.
Wow, great photos. Are any of these available for sale?
Lovely pictures, a few of those I actually caught myself and was amazed to see them again... I cant imagine that a festival could be better than Glastonbury - enough material at Glastonbury to keep you busy for 4 hours a day for a year - and prob more!
ONE SERIOUSLY JEALOUS AMERICAN HERE. SERIOUSLY JEALOUS. This is certainly on my list of things I'm definitely doing before I'm 30.
I only went to the 2nd ever Glastonbury festival ! How it;s changed over the years - but it still seems Great !!!
What an amazing set pictures. Makes me even more depressed that it's over! Bring on next year!
Enjoy Matty :) Rock'on" Cheers From The Smed's :)
@#222 "Dave"
If you have the stomach to see, it's here. Possibly not safe for work if you work somewhere with sensitive stomachs!

#236 Leon Neal, excellent photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/leonneal/3674761253/. Quite comical, and I can still smell the toilets from looking at it.
Best festival EVER!
This year was my 3rd Glastonbury and it was the best so far. Highlights include Florence & The Machine, Blur, Trash City, the whole area around the Park stage and the stone circle for sunrise.
If you have never been then you'll have no idea of how amazing those 5 days are.
Luca (#23 / #159), your ignorance is nothing short of astounding. How can you generalise 175,000 people and literally hundreds of performers as ‘terrible’, ‘worse’ and ‘hippies’?? The fact that you have never even attended the festival does nothing to help your credibility so it you don’t like it, feel free to stay away – your absence will only make it better next year.
It was one of the best weekends of my life, thanks Glasto!
Absolutely Amazing Pictures ! I really must try and get there one day soon !
I have been going to Glasto forever as im a piltonian born and bred i was there in the very begining for Mark Bolan in the top field and it just keeps getting better I hope I will still be going when i qualify for my Zimmer
I'm coming...
JUST COMING!

You could smell the fear and tension, and when someone in the crowd used a little lazer pen (which is quite normal here) there was panic and warnings throughout the back stage area and there was a constant awareness of the impending attack, as if it were possible or likely. They were heavy and over the top yes way over the top. Professional, yes and unnecessary too. It was such a difference in the way in which the UK and the USA handle the fear. Within the UK it is the authorities that use it for obtaining more power over us and traveling singers and tourists from America that live in fear.
Amazing pictures, you've really captured the spirit of glasto...the sunsets, the people, the music & energy! Cant wait for next year.
Thanks Mo for sending me this.
I've been going since 1971. 2009 was great. and the spirit lives on.
God bless Michael and all his angels
I WANT TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AHHHHHHH! MEMORIES OF WOODSTOCK, USA AND THE SUMMER OF LOVE.
These pictures are awesome, the picture with the couple laying in the grass definitely caught my eye-- it is brilliant!!! i love how it's so peaceful. Absolutely HAVE to make it to glasto in the next couple of years.
yes me too.. travelled from australia for my second glasto
about as much fun as you can possibly have!
these pics are a lot better than the 800 i took!
can we talk about NEIL and his aboriginal flag t shirt now? AWESOME!!!
my first ever glastonbury and by far and away the best place i ever been. to anyone thinking bout going, just do it....your love it. if you have been and wana complain then fine, if you havent been then SHUT UP!!!!. you got no idea what your talking about.
People who can afford hundreds of pounds for a music festival are the sort of people who are used to having others clean up after them. It's not really a progressive cross-section of society, more a country club for trustafarians and stockbrokers on their weekend off.
Still, looks like fun and amazing pictures
Okay, loads of people slagging the festival off, so I’m going to say I went in 2008, and hope to go back in 2010 as a spectator. I worked for security (steward, stood on gates and stages inside - not outside vixen) in 2008 and we only had one major incident; someone overdosed. They were taken to hospital, and concerned passers by tried to help out all they could. They were not 'left lying in the mud' like someone suggested (most of that is posed for anyway! And considering the festival is famed for mud, many like to get as messy as they can in the closest puddle!). Yes, it's sad but that was of their own doing but they weren't violent, and didn't spoil the festival for anyone else, except maybe their friends. Everyone else came up to us for directions or a chat, so we met loads of great people! I can only imagine what is was like to be pat of the crowd rather than in a florescent jacket! J There is a true community spirit at Glasto that is honestly amazing.
I didn't see many hippies but to be honest, in my opinion that's what the festival is all about! Plus after a week spent in a tent and limited shower facilities people are going to smell, and guess what? You will too so you wont even notice! The rubbish is too be expected, nearly 200,000 people do tend to make a mess! Half the problem is the bin facilities aren’t sufficient; but the Friday they were already full and people were piling stuff perilously near them. Yes the motto is ‘Love the farm, leave no trace’ but not everyone listens unfortunately. It was hardly ‘dirty’ though. They say the clean up can last until august; I think that was 2005 - Google the pictures; it was a mud bath so hard to clean up after. The man that runs it feels it’s safe enough to run a dairy farm off of the land the rest of the year which is where he makes his money, most of the cash from the festival goes to charity.
@ 116, it’s just someone having fun in dress up! Calm down… Also ‘Tipi’ is deliberately misspelt, and if you can afford it, why not? You get too sleep near showers, not have to haul a tent with you and get a proper bed in a non-crowded field near the stone circle. We met a couple on there honey moon who had rented one, and a friend of mine travelled up there and saw Kate Moss walking out of one! They have there market anyway and raise more money for charity so what’s the problem?
To people who moaned about the musicians; they only showed main stage acts. My leaflet from last year tells me 10,000 people perform every year. People like Bruce get attention because they are big names, so they play the main stages. There are actually over 20 official stages, and many impromptu stages and performances all over the site. The BBC introducing stage for example has just-signed bands on it, or there are smaller tents for up and coming artist, but photographers find it harder to sell those pictures I guess so they concentrate on the big acts. There is big varity of music too, last year Jay-Z headlined, along with The Verve and Kings Of Leon. There is a Jazz stage, Actousic tent, Dance tents, with Dee-jays and many more.
All in all despite 12 hour shifts we managed to have a great time, see most of the sites and some behind the scenes madness too! It really is magic and it’s hard not to get caught up in that when you’re there. They’ve shown so much mainstream stuff but there are fields dedicated to allsorts, there like Greenfield‘s and Trash city. You wont want to sleep the whole weekend (Like we tried to do!) because there is always something going on. At 6am the ‘clubs’ on site (Silent disco and the one in trash city) close but there are still people everywhere. Some of the stalls don’t close at all, one night in park we saw people ‘raving’ outside a coffee shop with good music! The randomness and craziness is incomparable and I’d recommend it to anyone. Look at the impression it left on me, and I had to deal with working there too! The worse memory is the smell of the loo’s (which I don’t think will ever leave me!) but that’s maybe part of the experience?
I am getting near 60 in age and felt Glastonbury was something I had to do so I signed up to go with my 3 daughters, my sister, niece and son-in-law. I felt I could tick it off my list and never go again. My biggest dread was the toilets, not camping as I love it anyway. Well I cannot find words to say how wonderful an experience it was and I have registered again for next year and will continue to do so as long as I am able. There was everyone from tiny babies to people older than me, family groups, friends, wheelchair users, people on crutches and every mixture of humanity, dress, era etc etc It was awesome and the pictures here brought back the atmosphere and view and sheer size of it all. There is so much to see and do and explore and make and listen to. I went to many of the "older" artists but also loved seeing younger musicians that I had never heard of and now look for their music and recognise it on the radio. I feel rejuvenated, excited, sexy and full of love for an experience that everyone can take part in and find something to enjoy. I went to the circus area by chance and must applaud the daring and entertaining acts I saw. Well I could go on but most of all thanks to the crews who cleaned toilets(and yes they were sometimes bad but mostly good) and picked up litter and looked after the site in many ways. I do agree that more people could have put their litter in the bins. GLASTONBURY YOU ARE AWESOME AND LONG MAY IT CONTINUE

Thanks Mo for sending me this.
I've been going since 1971. 2009 was great. and the spirit lives on.
God bless Michael and all his angels" Andrew Kerr.
*the* Andrew Kerr? I assume it must be. Wonderful to know you're still around and enjoying it.
For anyone who doesn't know, Andrew was instrumental making the festival happen in those early days.
Beautiful pics. Did you get any of Kava Kava?

Fantastic photo's! They really capture the essence of Glastonbury. 2009 was my third year and I actually watched that lightning bolt strike! If you haven't been before then you must. Everyone is so happy, friendly and it's like living in a different world! No other festival in the UK compares to it and i've never known anyone to go that hasn't liked it. We were actually lucky enough to spot Michael Eavis in the crowd and he posed with us for a picture!

Wow , what an amazing set of photos !!!
Wish they were mine !
Absolutely Fantastic
Simply Awesome!
PERFECT!
@Floriblunda - great post for a great photo-article.
I'm English and living in Australia, missing Glasto terribly as the gigs here are just that, and day long festies are not really up to much. They try though.
Anything which remotely resembles a 3 days camping festival event is over booked, flights go up, way over priced, accommodation booked out and not enough camping site for tickets - also the number is tickets is no where near the 190,000 of Glastonbury. This always surprises me as they have more than enough land here!
I'm hoping some of the Glasto effect will rub off on the Aussies and they make more of their vibrant music scene down here.
Amazing photos, really captures the magic of my favourite festival!
It just keeps getting better and better, role on 25th June 2010!!
Ohh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's interesting.
I WANT TO GO....
.....NEXT YEAR............
