Typhoon Morakot

After forming as a tropical depression over the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 km east of the Philippines on August 2nd, Typhoon Morakot built in power and moved quickly west. Over the past several days, the storm has passed over the Philippines, Taiwan and Mainland China, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage due to high winds, flooding and mudslides. Southeast China evacuated nearly 1 million people ahead of the storm, after Morakot broke many records in Taiwan, dumping a total of 2.5 meters (100 inches) of rain on the island. At least 40 people are known to have died so far, but hundreds remain missing - many from one village in Taiwan, reportedly engulfed by a mudslide during the storm. (36 photos total)

I am from Taiwan. These are real people, people who could well be your father, husband, daughter, or friend. I believe no human being would want this to happen to anyone, so I don't think we should criticize or judge anyone, including the government. I believe the real problem is the very serious mudslide problem in Taiwan. Taiwan, by geography, is often attacked by typhoons and earthquakes, these natural disasters will never stop. We should put more effort into environmental issues, only by doing so can we minimize future damage. There should be a definite rule to which areas can be inhabited, and which can not. Laws should be set, and it is time we actually followed them. This effort requires not only the government's authority but also the people's cooperation. God bless Taiwan.

It's sad to see people suffering from the typhoon. I'm Taiwanese and am writing from this country. The government of Mr MA has been doing a very poor job from the beginning. His supporters don't want to see the fact. Mr MA was absent from the national scene during the first three days of the disaster. Where was he ? What did he do during those three days ? He is like a general that believed himself to be a soldier. He doesn't know how to command - or he doesn't want to. I look forward to the day he steps down in 2012, or before that for the better.

if you can read chinese, local news here in tw,
and if you do noted ma's statement at the first time,
then you will realise why ppl here are so angry to put the blame to the gov't.
the disaster gets worse and worse because of losing timing + failed to command,
caused more and more civilians unable evacuated from village,
and the following days are digging + body bags....

but in reality.. this is cruel to we ordinary people,
if you are employee, and you could fired because you misjudge your work.
i'm not saying we should replace another leader asap,
everyone should heve learn from mistake,
so do ma's gov't.
unfortunately.. i don't see ma + liu attitude -_-

Study the reason for under preparation, search for ways to better react, making laws to create the more effect government structures then carry out the implementation REGARDLESS who is running the government in the future.

Typhoon and quakes are the two major natural disasters of Taiwan. Hope the Weather Scientists in Taiwan think outside the Box such as Fat Typhoon will have lots of water, etc. Also, preventaion is always the best ideas, given the brief July to October Typhoon season. Even Ma government is able to use airplanes to go to the Typhoon eyes and do the jobs better.

I am in Taiwan and I knew and said that from the day the president started to visit the grieving families whilst holding a microphone in his hands that his advisors were still playing political games..to visit someone in grief and then broadcast their sobbing pleas was inhumane and thoughtless..A few days later i watched the news as he stepped up his visual mercy policy & lo and behold he stepped from a helicopter!..there were villages that could not be reached because of a mysterious lack of helicopters but we were treated to the president using one to visit the grieving...he is a nice man, but his advisors should be sacked

WHERE IS THE BIG LOVE?
So Sad!
People are suffering and paid for their causes.
We should take care of our Mother Nature seriously.
Too bad!
There are always political biases flowing around like ghosts.
Also, what we see and read here simply an international media point of view of the Act of the Mother Nature.
By far, we read many comments simply cry for help "form Taiwan for Taiwan ONLY".
How about Phillipine (Cebu)?
How about China?
Act Of God doesn't distinguish where or who you are.
So doesn't LOVE.
And Love doesn't count political biases.

Thank you all for your blessing, the main problem are
1. The gov. reacted way too slow, all the officials are no where to be seem including Mr. Ma.
Remember the earthquake in China last april? China's premier was on the scene the second day (China is a big country, it does take a while to get there, VS Taiwan is TINY, it doesn't take three days), I don't care if he was there only for show, during this time, you need some kind of leadership, and when Mr. Ma took the position of the president, he is suppose to be that leader, but he is not.

2. Slow reaction time. For those who lived through the 9/11 incident in US. remember how US gov. are able to ground ALL the flight in about 2-3 hours, and shuts down the entire NYC at almost the same time also, Taiwan is not a big country, it doesn't take that long to react. It took 2-3 days for the military to mobilize and start helping, Why?

3. Why is Mr. Ma refusing outside help? During a time like this, Taiwan needs all the help that we can, When experts offers their help, it's better to take it

4. Mr. Ma LIES. He stated that he did not refuse help from outside, when the next day, the paper clears shows it. I am no expert on government papers to other country, however, I think any major communication to other country will require the President's notice.

5. For those who says CNN has no rights to held this kind of survey. Tell you something, PPL who logs on to CNN are usually ppl who has been to the US, or speak the english language. Which also means they are educated ppl. And in Taiwan, these ppl usually lives in the North of Taiwan (not saying the south is less educated, but percentage wise). And the result of the survey by those ppl who are not really affected by the typhoon is like 87%? Imaging all the ppl who where affected by the typhoon can read the english language, the result will probably be in the high 90s.

The approval rate of Mr. Ma is down to the low 10s, you really can't expect ppl to trust him anymore can you? I am not from blue or green party, I am just an ordinary citizen of Taiwan who wish the ppl can recover from this very quickly, Taiwan are known to fight for every breath. It's a beautiful country, with wonderful ppl, please come visit us whenever you have a chance, you will noticed how friendly ppl really are (Other than a few political A**Holes, but which country doesn't have those)

we are worried for our next generation.,not only for "this man" want to take people in this iland to disaster again, like more ferous H1N1 epidemic ,economic recession, high rate unemployment more than 6%,but also ask young people to accept China education literature to be main steam, most of people here are irritated for his political stream.

talking back to what he did in Taipei city, full of scandal in public constructions, particular Mono train which stop to replare, nobody knows what it will be in future ,cost 70billion NTD for a garbage construction, "this man" let us feel very lousy, shame on him!!!

It is always easier to write or to say a thing than doing it. To those who live in Taiwan, why don't you get your ass up then go to the disaster area and give your best shot? I believe actions speaks louder than words, isn't it?. But at this moment, I believe by donating money to the charity organizations is not a wise idea to do, because these money will never 100% benefits the grieving families (I believe only 5% or lesser) If this is the case, where the hell did those money go?. If anyone can still remember the 921 big earthquake in Taiwan, billions of Taiwan dollars were donated (I guess the amount donated this time is not far), but where the hell did it go? To those charity leaders, please don't fool people, don't think that people don't know math (hello, it's only add and minus) these money can save lives and give them a better life.

Oh My God!!! what a sad disaster. Look at the pictures!! I am late to read and express my views on it. But when I read the views of people from different prospective and places...most of us are talking that we are being very sad and hurt because our family members are there and might have been hurt or having problems etc. Also we talk about our property has been lost and so on. This is a moment full of sorrow - there is no doubt about it. The feeling from the one who actually have lost his/her beloved son or daughter, sister or brother, mother or father, wife or husband is heart-smashing- there is no doubt about it too. But me; I am all the way from Nepal and I have no one there in Taiwan. I and none of my family member is loosing nothing personally... But my heart has gone out for these people who have been killed and who have been suffered. It is a bond of humanity and nothing else. Any corner in the world if a human being is suffered by any reason/s, the heart weeps! It must be only the human relationship. So, in this situation we rather view to unite. I think we all must be united for ONLY one goal, that is to help the needy people! All the able ones must donate whatever we can. Those who are away geographically and unable for physical donate, must pray to God! This comes in oneself and costs nothing. It helps the humanity! It helps to the people who are for save people. It provides moral and eternal power who are at the devastated area with their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and all of the Taiwanese people! God Bless you all!!!!

I am from Singapore. Very tragic for the people in Taiwan.
Pl stop blaming each other, just get on and re-built.
The politics in Taiwan is just so disgusting that I have no words to describe. I have both relatives and friends in both Taiwan and China, both hurt hust as bad. In a situation like this, we will not quarrel but solve it.
the typhoon was way above any historical mark, no helicopters could fly in that situation. In Taiwan, you cannot forced evacuation as local politics prevails. Building on land reclaimed from rivers will not work considering Taiean's geograhical topograhy. Bless Taiwan, be strong, be resolute, STOP qura

All the typhoon victim needs right now is helping hands to rebuilt their lives, to face the future to what they had lost so much : their loves ones who depart from them, properties which they had labor for years, not blaming who's fault was it, even though really the government was really slow to take action in surveying the typhoon disaster so that appropriate help will be sent, they did not inspect that the disaster in southern part of Taiwan was so great. Let us pray that the reconstruction of houses, school, hospital and road will be fast and smoothly that the victims people can live comfortably. May God protects them.

My heart (from Kansas) goes out to you all, in Taiwan, the Peng Yu, and Liu Qiu. Also Fujian, Zhejian, Phillipines, etc. I pray God, Buddha Nature, that Heaven will help you all. That I may do what I can, as well.

It's sad to see disaster like this anywhere in the world. But when things do happen why people just keep complianting. Actions should be taken immediately not just by word of mouth. For those who can give should give, like money and time to actually go their and help out.
We are the one who destroying this world. Who should be blame??
May God give his mercy to comfort those in pain and for those who have never heard of God at this time of pain will take God as their Saviour. May God look upon this world and blessed us all.

I think Taiwan has just got a taste of what is to come - Global Warming.
Taiwanese are very spiritually conscious people and I urged all Taiwanese
to be vegetarians, stop the killing, and pray for the wellbeing of Taiwan .

Despite all the help and gesture of brotherhood by China, how did the people of Taiwan respond ? They complained about the pre-fab houses sent in by China; They refused the offer by China to send in helicopters to help transport the victims of Morakot and yet were happy to accept similar offer from the US and with a huge fee; They then invited the troublesome separatist leader, Dalai Lama, to Taiwan as if there are no Buddhist monks in Taiwan; Now they are even planning to bring in another Xinjiang separatist leader, Rebiya Kadeer after she had instigated the mass slaughter of innocent civilians in Xinjiang in July. The Mayor of Gaoxiong , Chen Chu,has already allowed the Xinjiang separatist propaganda, glorifying the terrorist, Rebiya to be screened in Taiwan. The Chinese all round the world are showing so much concern and support for the victims of Morakot and yet the goodwill has never be returned. Think about it ,people of Taiwan.

I lived in Taiwan for two years and was able to personally experience some of the awesome Taiphoon's there. The power is beyond anything you can imagine unless you've experienced it before. I like a lot of Americans would just go waltzing around feeling invincible to the storm, with Taiwanese people screaming for me to come inside. Taiwanese have experienced these disasters before and know what to do when they come. They are some of the nicest, most compassionate people on Earth, and I know that every able boddied citizen rose to the challenge of helping their distressed neighbors. I hope that all of my friends are doing well there in the aftermath of this storm!

God bless president Ma.
All you fools who cannot see a pure heart should be ashamed of yourselves.

Would you rather have that conniving piece of horse squeeze, vile excuse for a human being Chen Shuei Bian to be in office at a time like this?
He will probably pocket all the rescue donations in his personal offshore accounts, and let the people die.

President Ma is doing all that he can, while remaining a gentleman.

Those who criticize without knowing how to do a better job themselves shall be burned in hell.
