China prepares for its 60th anniversary

Chinese citizens and government workers have been preparing for months for their upcoming celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st. Parts of Beijing have been shut down several times, allowing for rehearsals of a once-in-a-decade military parade, multiple artistic performances and shows, fireworks and more. Security concerns are high as well, bringing out large details of security personnel and equipment. Collected here are images from the past several weeks of people around China preparing to celebrate their National Day. (37 photos total)

China is a great country and is destined for even greater heights. All its detractors funnily enough, are the West and their supposedly informed citizens. The primary reason is that this national "Rip Van Winkle" has awoken and burst onto the international stage in a manner unseen heretofore AND the West that currently dominates all world affairs just does not know how to handle this juggernaut. Instead of griping and sniping they (the West) ought to practise accomodation whilst taking valuable lessons from the Chinese for their very own continued development!

China is an indispensable player in the 21st century world partnership team. I think in no way can this VERY GREAT NATION be regarded as a listener or minor partner in the current process of globalisation. It should be an active member, and even one of the countries with the final say in all domains, being financial, economic, political or cultural. If you argue Ibrahim, then come to China and see for yourself. BRAVO La Chine.

USA have always been a great country. Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, Benjamin Franklin and so many outstanding characters in their short history. This country reached its peak shortly after World War Two. Then Americans become weakened by good and easy life. Just watch the language spoken by Americans in 1950s and after 2000, in public and in movies. Old China reached its peak in Tang Dynastry, good and easy life, fine culture, ignored military affairs and science, thus the decline for more than 2000 years. New China is only 60 years old. But before that, China had to suffer invasion by united 8 western nations, the occupation of Japanese in Manchuria. USA can return to its former glory if they change their lifestyle. China must never repeat the same mistakes their ancestors had done. Then we will have strong USA and China to work for world peace. In fact, all nations on earth should be strong, prosperous and peace loving to make this world a good place to live.

I am a Malaysian Chinese whose grandparents originated from southern China. I married a Chinese girl born in Xiamen. I read write and speak Mandarin and speak hokkien dialect. I have been to China a number of times and had stayed with her people while studying medical acupuncture and moxibustion in order to understand their ways of life. China has been accused of being autocratic and lack of human rights by those with ulterior motives, calculated to fool ignorant people who don't read and travel widely. People in Tibet and Xinjiang are said to be suppressed and colonised by China. These saddened me because I don't think historically China is a colonising power hungry country. I visited Xinjiang silk road recently and was very impressed with the progress and peace in the region which had mutual agreement stretching over past 500 years. I agree with the opinions of 1108, 1117 and 1124. Those who stay in glass houses should refrain from throwing stones as they may break their own houses instead.

Notwithstanding the above, my sincere congratulations to China and her peoples on the 60th Anniversary and the fantastic efforts in the celebrations. May the future be even more spectacular and successful as China reclaims her long suppressed role as a great power and nation on the world stage to champion not only for their own people but also for the peoples in the world at large.
Just like you have done well in the last Olympics and the earthquake, you can succeed again with unity and humility.
May God richly bless China and her peoples!

I am a first generation Chinese in Malaysia. My parents came from Fujian, China to Malaysia to seek a better life. And they did.
Having visited a few cities in China in the past few years, I am truly proud to be of Chinese descent. The world does not have to fear the Chinese, for they are not out to colonize the world, change your way of thinking or your choice of religion. They are a peaceful people. Their fault, if it can be described as such, is in working hard to better themselves and their children.

I am so proud to be a Chinese and so thankful that Hong Kong is part of China. The Chinese Government had done so much in the last 20 years to make China become where they are today. Can you imagine running such a huge country? Democratic parties, please stop complaining and do something for your country and not for yourself instead! God bless all Chinese and poeple who love China!!!

Glancing through the comments, I saw all Chinese (99% or more?), no matter where we live, love China and are proud of our (Chinese people's) accomplishments in the past 30 years. That's all what matters to Chinese.
The world would be a much better place to live if all people in all nations have that kind of love and pride for their own countries.
For those who hate China and anything Chinese do, please put your energy somewhere else like making your contributions to your societies so you can be that much proud of your own countries.
For those who gave constructive criticism, we appreciate your good intention and your critics will make China better every day.
For all of us who love China, go China!

here is the article from http://www.mirror.co.uk.
I think this artile can represent something.
This is the typycal westen people or media's mind style when comes to China, maybe only when comes to China??

Public missing... do this writer think there should be much ordinary people stand there and watch the display? If the participaters are not ordinary people? if there is enough places for people to stand there watching? How to organize so much ordinary people ( i don;t lnow what this write think it should be ORGINARY PEOPLE, and how many people he thinks should stand there and watch.)
i think some of them are outstanding people with good achievement that Chinese are prdoud of, like Liu Xiang (he is standing on the top of a display car), most of the particiaters are ordinary people.

it is so funny.
Orginary Chinese people knows that not every people can go to that places to watch it by their own eyes. They watch TV and excited and are very pround.

So, read this article and think.

The only thing missing from China's 60th anniversary was the public
By Mark Austin 4/10/2009

The 60th birthday party held by China’s communist authorities was staged with great ceremony, goose-stepping troops and spectacular fireworks. What was missing were ordinary people.

The fact is that more than half a century after Mao’s rule, and more than 20 years after the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese government still doesn’t trust its own subjects.

Advertisement - article continues below »

There were no spontaneous street parties and hundreds of students, civil rights campaigners and academics were harassed and arrested.

With their growing economy, increasing power and staggering Olympics China has much to celebrate… but not the freedom of its people.

This is very discouraging. Judging by the comments here, the gap in understanding between the Chinese and the rest of the world is vast.

For westerners, the national day parades represent the worst of a repressive society, a "Potemkin Village" where everything is stage-managed, where any hint of individualism is ruthlessly repressed, where every possibility of dissent is squashed.

For Chinese, the parades represent the incredible achievements of the last 60 years, where China pulled itself up from its knees, threw out the foreign invaders, and brought peace and prosperity to hundreds of millions.

Neither Westerners or Chinese really understand what motivates the other, so generally they imagine the worst. It is like a conversation between two deaf men.

Let's hope that one day we'll develop some mutual understanding.

Being born and grew up in a foreign country i'm quite westernized. Yet i'm very proud to be Chinese. How often have i not heard bad stories about my own nation by those stinky white people. Even some black dude recently told me that if there's a war between USA and China, China will never win. I can tell u this even USA fears China. A war cannot be won by just modern weaponary, look at Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. China is not here to declare war with other countries unlike western countries. Look at the history how 8 countries attacked 1 land in the past and turn many parts into colonies. The only thing the white people remember is to refer to what happened in '89, Tibet and no freedom to criticize China. I believe it's the Europeans who stole the land from the Indians, Aboriginals etc not to mention slavery in Africa. Every country has it's own problems including China. Things are improving there not as fast as many of us would want but it's heading the right way.

Proud to be Chinese, proud of it's very long history and inventions and what it has achieved to modernize our country. Not to mention the contribution to the world by a Chinese for his pioneering work in the realisation of fiber optics who has won the Nobel Prize recently.

About 2 weeks ago, MSS Ronald Reagan, US aircraft carrier and its protecting frigates sailed to Phuket, Thailand for R&R from Afghanistan war. The jet fighter pilots and sailors behaved excellently onshore. I guess most of them graduates of Annapolis Naval Academy, one of the best military and education institutions in the world. Problem is most of these bright young guys, during growing up will be weakened by the porn culture prevailing in US society. Just stating a fact, if USA allowed Bill Clinton to go scot free on his affairs with Monica Lewinski simply during his Presidency simply because the economy was booming, Wall Street big boys to cheat (Madoff and Standford who got caught), God know how many frauds are there is USA. Manhattan is a dirty, poor and miserable place. The glamour of Manhattan belong to the rich. We don't want a single super power, we want China, USA, EU, India and Russia to be strong and prosperous so there is a check and balance. Many peoples say Obama winning the Nobel Price in Peace is a joke. I really don't think so. Obama is not a God and he will make honest mistakes during his presidency. But I am confident he is a good man and will lead USA to work with other Nations for a better world.

Get a life or Come to China to see for yourself. and stop making any arrogant comments before you rigthfully know the truth.

THERE IS SOMETHING THE OTHER WORLD POWERS SHOULD LEARN FROM HERE....GO TO CHINA, LEARN THEIR WAYS AND YOU WILL NOT SPEND THE MASSES' 3 BILLION BUCKS A DAY ON THAT "UNFINISHED MATTER"..HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHINA!!!

I think 1214/Albin Mullner means good. Every country must be on their guard when they become strong and prosperous. Modern corruptions come in the forms of pornography, freedom without discipline, nepotism and many social ills. In history, China reached its peak in Tang Dynasty. Then the founding Emperor of Sung Dynasty shifted power to civilian officers and purposely suppressed military development, simply because he, as a general, was crowned during a battle and he was sensitive about military men. As a result, literature and philosophy flourished while national defense got weak, thus later invaded by Mongols. China was so proud to call themselves Zhong Guo (Middle Kingdom) and looked down on other nations as barbarians. When Marco Polo visited China (Italy was already in great splendor, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo due to Catholics in Vatican), he was amazed by the high civilization in China under Kublai Khan (grandson of Mongolian Genghis Khan). Then China was invaded of Japan and western nations and suffered great misery. In year 2000, my son and I went to USA via London. We visited Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the British Museum. It was the first time he, 18 yeras old, ever visited England so I asked him, was he impressed? I was surprised to hear his negative reply, "no, not at all!. The Winsors (family name of British royal family), were the world's biggest narcotic traders under British East India Company. They stole antiques and treasures from everywhere, Egypt, China, India, Africa and many places. If I am a narcotic trader with legal protection like the Windsors, I would have built more splendid monuments and UK won't be so poor"

This is my last article on this blog. I wish all Chinese to strive for better achievements, never give up, always stay in the lead. In the last G20 Meeting, President Hu proposed nuclear disarmament in a fair manner. Iran and Korea should discontinue with their nuclear weapon developments. But USA, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and France should disarm existing nuclear weapons to zero under cross supervision by other countries. I wish China and the world all prosperous and peaceful.

I am not a Chinese, but had the opportunity to travel and work in China
from 1992 and always admired the progress China has made, especially in the infrastructure.
Today I saw the video of the 60th Anniversary celebration and parade.
The way the soldiers marched , it was awesome.
They were like ROBOTS.
They have caught up with the world miliyary and
It showed what discipline and training can do.
CHINA , CONGRATULATIONS AND WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

China made great progress because it was nearly a white paper.
As people on this land are alive, there must be a progress.
Besides, I don't take this progress as achievement.

AT 60, CHINA HAS DEMONSRTATED THAT DEMOCRACY IS EFFECTIVE ONLY WHEN THERE IS EQUALITY BEFORE LAW.

-THIS IS A COMMENT TO THE REPLY;1215. WHICH WAS MADE FOR MY ORIGINAL COMMENT OF 1214.
Mr. Qing Ni, - I am not really a westener, rather one who trying to think freely, independently of the collective mindset, Chinese or otherwise. That is why I have some awareness of the negatives that lurks behind power, grandeur, and beauty. This kind of vision is in no way arrogance! Please consider that.
If China really welcomes as you stated; "even the enemies", then I hope the rest of you ?millions, also welcomes the free thinkers. For with power grows, you will need them more than miles length of silky decorations. I appreciate one's love of his/hers country, which is good and needed, providing it is free of national chauvinism. But love tends to be, as the old (this time western) saying states "love is blind". Yet human deeds constantly in need of corrections, and great deeds needs great corrections. Still, Mr. Ni, - I wish you and your compatriots plenty good for many moons.
I also wish to take the oportunity to thank you Mr. Anonymus - 1217. for your kowledgeable support. For such expressions give me the inspiration to contribute by writing. - Albin G. Mullner.

China was once a great country, slept for awhile, and now has awaken again to its glorious past. The dragon is alive again! Let no country belittle or show it disrespect. In this new millenium, it will be even greater than America ever will be. Let Chinese people, wherever they are in this world, be proud of their heritage. The Chinese people are a beautiful, proud and generous race.

-All the glitter and the shine of this end of 60 years of Chinese communism, does not hides the horror of it's establishment. ~ AND WHY TO BE AWARE OF IT? ~ Because;
THE WRONG THAT WE DO NOT WANT TO KNOW, MAY REOCCURE!
Towards the end of the Soviet communism, Gorbachev and the Russian people established 'GLASNOS & PARASTROJKA (honesty & openness) in which they admitted their evil deeds, and aimed for betterment.
BETTERMENT IS DIFFICUILD AND SLOW! ~ but at least they started it, which would have been impossible without admission and repentance.

to 1166 what do the attack dogs at Salma, Alabama on March, 7th, 1965 and the national guards at Kent State on May, 4th, 1970 remind you of?
If you're too young to know these historic events, then how about the water-boarding technique the CIA was using just recently? What does that remind you of?

To1129. There is a trap for Russia to become a country as what you called "the Russian people established 'GLASNOS & PARASTROJKA (honesty & openness) in which they admitted their evil deeds, and aimed for betterment." The western made this trap for the russian. Look at that what a country the russia have became, that is what your western want.

This is a US site and it displays good and bad comments about The USA, can you say that about any web sites that function in China? Can any one of you China lovers say some any thing against the lovely china and live to see the next day????

To Sina/1237
In Thailand, we have plenty of Americans, Canadians and Australians who live here for good, married with family. We treat them with courtesy. Some are really bad, some are average but some are really outstanding, like Jim Thompson, the Silk King of Thailand (search on Google or any major search engine and you can learn about him) and Bill Heineke, Owner of Minor Group, one of the richest men in Thailand. You can read about him on Google too.

1238/What good is freedom without self discipline? As a society, we must have law and order. Read below article!

This took Guts

A Pastor with GUTS!

Thought you might enjoy this interesting
prayer given in Kansas at
the opening session of their Senate. It seems
prayer still upsets some
people.. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open
the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is

what they heard:
*Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask
your forgiveness and to seek your direction and
guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those
who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we
have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed
our values.

We have exploited the poor and called it
the lottery.

We have rewarded laziness and called it
welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it
choice.

We have shot abortionists and called it
justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our
children and called it building self esteem..

We have abused power and called it
politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions
and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and
pornography and called it freedom of expression.

We have ridiculed the time-honored values
of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts
today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Amen! ****
The response was immediate. A number of
legislators walked out during the prayer in
protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian
Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than
5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls
responding negatively. The church is now receiving
international requests for copies of this prayer
from India , Africa and Korea .

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on
his radio program, 'The Rest of the Story,'and
received a larger response to this program than any
other he has ever aired.

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep
over our nation and wholeheartedly become our
desire so that we again can be called 'one nation
under God.'
