Oktoberfest, 2009
The 176th Oktoberfest started on Saturday the 19th, kicked off by Munich Mayor Christian Ude, tapping the first keg with a cry of "O'zapft is!". With predictions of over 6 million visitors heading to Munich, the festival runs until October 4th. This year, a traditional liter of beer will cost visitors about 8 euros (11.75 dollars). And new this year: Oktoberfest iPhone apps, including a dictionary, ordering assistant and a blood-alcohol calculator. Collected here are a few photographs from the first couple of days of Oktoberfest 2009. (31 photos total)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/blog/2009/sep/22/oktoberfest-gay-munich
@Michael
You have no clue what you're talking about don't you
I agree entirely with comment 24th. People use to say that you can only enjoy the Oktoberfest if you're drunk, an I guess anybody can enjoy anything when they're drunk. Anyway, # 123, I think you're a bit too fast with your statements, there are now many blonde bavarians, I don't want to get into anthropology or any scientifical study, but just because someone's blonde it it doesn't make her an immigrant from the north.
Prosit!!!
It was the best celebration I´ve ever been part of...
Looking forward to be there again...
Fábio from Brazil
Super!!
I've been to Germany only a couple of times once on a tour w/my band and then to visit relatives but I've never been to Oktoberfest and I really have to go fur gutes essen, gemutlicheit und. gut bier. Prosit meine Deutsche freunden!!!!
Can they manage to fit 1 more beautiful young woman on 24...lol
SO SCHÖN...
Bierfest ich komme! Ozapf is!!!!
its great. Enjoyed and enjoyment was lot.
but i'm here in India
What a party! ! ! More great pictures. No. 11 is so sweet--the young man has the nicest smile.
I LOVE number 11
pic 24 (mid): let gravity do the rest... :-)))
well it is nice, actually I am going to Oktoberfest with guys from work in 15 minutes
But I think is overexposed and overrated too - there are similar celebrations all over the world that don't get this exposure.
#28 is the best. Ladies, you want sexy? That's sexy!
I like beer verymuch ,too
Why does Oktoberfest start in September? Am I missing something? Looks like a lot of fun anyway! Food, beer, and blonde German women! AWESOME!!
Hi, my name is Bárbara. I'm live in Blumenau-SC!
Oktoberfest in here is big too! Food, beer and beutiful woman and all cultures: Italian,German, Brazilian, etc!
Kisses and bye!
@Marton Radkai
Dont know what kind of beer you drink at home. I'm from Germany and I've been at the Wiesen like 5 times allready. They sell "Weißbier" - its very light beer normaly (has a very good taste thought) but you normaly have to drink alot of it before you get the alcohol kicking.
Of course you also can buy heavier ones but its not the "standard" beer you get at the Oktoberfest.
#22 and #24 are great pics, dirndl dress is really sexy!
Looks like a wonderful time! Thanks for keeping this excellent feature going. The best part of Boston.com - after Red Sox coverage!
Rewelacja - cos jak nasze chmielaki :)
Just got back, Miss it so much was phenominal.
I miss it. I am from there and have visited since I moved to Texas. There is nothing like it anywhere, even now, even after it has "changed." I think you can be lucky to even get 2 Mass delivered by your waitress. You have to spend all your time in a Bierzelt in order to drink more! As much fun as it is, standing on the benches, singing and dancing, the grounds are a real trip!
...sometimes I just miss home!
@raf69 - check this out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest#First_hundred_years - for more info on why it is in September and not October.
I went in 2006 and was one of the best experiences ever. It's one of those things that you have to do more than once in your lifetime.
Can't wait to go again.
Great pictures - now I'm craving a mug of "cold beer"....
I've been there twice with my wife. We both loved it. The first time we didn't know about the reserved tables and sat down with some locals that told us the table was reserved. We offered to leave but they said "no, drink with us". We had a great time with them. The rest is fuzzy history. Everyone was so nice. We were in the Augisteiner (sp?) tent with 5000+ people drinking and singing. We were all best friends before the end of the night. Lots of drinking but didn't see any trouble.
Hey Masi
Hams dir ins Hirn gschissn?! Weissbier auf der Wiesn? Des is kei Standard!
Auf der Wiesn wird Helles ausgschenkt und das Bier hat zwischen 5,8 und 6,3% alc. Wo isn des a leichts Bier?! I glaub du hast dWiesn nur mal aufn Zettl Papier gschissn.
Grüße, ein Münchner
You simply gotta love #11.
Sometimes, life is just good. DAS BOOT!!!!!!!
#22 is my favorite since it got the 3 Bs ... Beer + Bavarian dress + Boobies ^^
# 23 is a great shot.. and a great series as always.
I love #11 .... nice pic ... ^__^
awsome!!!
@66: quite right. "ein grosses kaltes bier bitte" would be 100% correct. means: a big cold beer please. but beer is in austria and germany always cold;)
pierwszy raz bylem na oktober fest najleprza impreza na swiecei polecam kazdemu.pozdrowienie od polakow
If only we had a festival like that in Auckland New Zealand my kids would not have to go for their big OE.
Just become a member in few minutes. Wanna send you guys a warm hello!
Glad to be here with you!!
Watching your beautiful pics, I get right away in the mood for visiting the "Wiesn" (=Octoberfest in Bavarian language).
But in spite I'll keep away. I prefer to watch your pics. As a real and true "Münchner Kindl" (= female inhabitant of Munich) I know the difference: It's the smell - and the feeling of being close to crowds of drunk people.
Best regards of beautiful Munich (during other seasons)
Ja tez bylem na takiej imprzie w Monachium i naprawde bylo super.
Pozdrawiam
Heading over for the festivals last weekend, cant wait....... 6 days till we leave!
Wunderbar.
Ha én egyszer ide eljuthatnék...
CERVEJA, CERVEJA, CERVEJA.
MUITO IMITADA MAS NUNCA IGUALADA, E GELADAAAAAAA.
Wow. Fabulous pictures!
99 % leute sind betrunken 80% nür Polizei Über alle Kotze !!!!! oktober fest ist einfach nür Scheisse München auch
10 bucks the guy in #18 is either a Kiwi or an Ozzie, marking the number of drinks on his arm so he remembers the next morning...reminds me of sitting in the sun over the new years week doing just that. Only difference is that he's drinking quality and we drink tui.
great, hope one day i can go there and enjoy
I am from Munich and I must say: Great Set of Pictures!
Most People think about girls in a "Dirndl" and beer when they are talking about the" Wiesn" (we don't call it "Oktober Fest").
But it's more! Thanks for this... =)
@Kalibri:
How writes a German sentences on a English Page?
By the way, He said:
"99% of the People are drunk, 80% are only police men, everywhere is vomit. The Oktober Fest is just sh*t, and Munich too"
You are just jealous you don't have the Wiesn... ;-)
The English word "carouse" is derived from the chant "Gar Aus!" (meaning "completely empty") that a reveler would call to a waitress to refill a beer mug. From the size of those mugs (2 liters, it would appear) I can't imagine calling for refills too often.
Being half Teuton myself, and having lived in Austria and toured through Germany, I must say I still find the traditional dirndl on the right female to be very attractive!
Do the "Marksmen" shot before or AFTER all their beers?
Here in Blumenau Brazil have a big oktoberfest too =] I love it
Can anyone make out what the heart in #11 says? It starts with "sz", hyphen, and ends with "gi". I don't know a German word that starts with "sz". Is it something in Polish? One other comment mentions she doesn't look German.
@G:
"SZ - di moag i" = "S üddeutsche Z eitung - dich mag ich" = "SZ - I like you"
so, just eatable advertisment for a german newspaper ;-)
He, great! I noticed four of the pictures are by my friend Steffi Loos. Here are more of her wounderful pictures: http://www.fotokombinat.net/
Oktoberfest...still not as great as Marti Gras...but close!
In der Tat, tolle Fotos!! Aber mich wuerden keine 10 Pferde zum Oktoberfest kriegen. (Indeed phenomenal fotos, but you couldn't pay me enough to go to the Oktoberfest!)
Ich bien de saucisson à l'ailheu
for the first time in my life i was at the oktoberfest Munich 2009, it was awsome and i enjoyed my all time staying there. it was the first time in my life that i saw a biggest festival like this. I dont even have much words to explain my feeling and emotions about this. I will always keep it in my history forever and ever.
nice pic
yesterday, i was there too, very crowdly, beer, food very good, nice girls dressed hotly and qutely at the same time
It is totally awsome.
I drank tooo much.
Bravo pour la perpétuation de cette belle fête ,on sait s'y amuser dans nos pays germaniques ! qualité des costumes ,belle organisation, jolies filles sans burka ! barbus juste ce qu'il faut etc ...
Maisi.... there is a Bavarian person who answered for me.... Weissbier is not an OFest special, and German beer is in general stronger than American beer, and at OFest it is seved in 1-liter glasses. (Weissbier has around 5-6% alcohol, so if you are not getting a kick, it is either because your tolerance to alcohol has risen -- cure: drink less for a while -- or because you failed to read the fine-print that said "alkohol-reduziert" or "alkoholfrei" -- cure: read and understand labels) So I repeat: Beware...
I suffer from agoraphobia, so I don't see the interest of the whole thing, apart from paying 1 liter beer 11$, which is outrageous.
And the "schaukeln" and singing "für Gemütlichkeit" is of course exotic for Americans, but for us (I'm not Bavarian but a neighbour) it gets old in the end...
Oh .. god!! ... plzz plz ... let me visit Germany, next Oktoberfest!!!!!!
I LUVE IT!!!!!
Dieu m'en préserve
Mensch Meier, what great pictures! Don't people get trampled in the festival tents?
I went to Oktoberfest in Munchen in 1987 and 1989 while stationed at Lahr.
The BEST party ever, bar none. Prosit!
I´m gonig to munchen only in a few hours. I´ll be there since september 30 to october 4 but....I´LL GO ALONE!!!
Please, phone me and let me join to your group, i´m like a kitty lost in a big city O:|
I´m from spain
My name is Santi and my celular phone is 0034619301290.
22 nice, but how about 24 ... upside down .... yaaaahooo
HASTA PARECEN DE MEXICALI
Just great pics, awesome! I'm from munich and i can tell you it's big fun.
The beer you get, is specially made for the Oktoberfest. It has about 6% of alcohol, depending on the producer. Normal beer has about 4,8%. However the oktoberfest beer is more quaffable!
Acutally, you have to be drunk, becouse the prices are very high. (8,60€ for a liter and you always have to give a tip. For a liter you will have to pay a least 9€ (~13$), better 9,50€ otherwise the waitress will get angry!) If you buy the SAME beer in a supermarket you spend 0,80€ for half a liter!
#22 is awesome!
Oktoberfest, Beir! Ja vohl! :-)
I just got back. It was insanely awesome, and I'll be back next year. If you go to the Hofbrauhaus, leave your underwear at the hotel. Trust me.
I live in Austria approx. 1 hour by car away from Munich and i was one time at Oktoberfest. For me its too much commercial and the prizes are much much too high.
Here in Austria we have Oktoberfest too but without so many tourists and the beer costs only 4€ and not 8,50€.
Sorry, what you postet in your newspaper IS NOT GERMANY!!!!!!
It's just Bavaria, a part of Germany. Why do you generalize that Munich and Bavaria represents the whole country? There is more variety in Germany than those beer drinking idiots. No wonder that press and media put emphasis on those pictures because they ar so colourfull and so simple. You better send out more reporters to write and photograph about other outstanding parts of my homeland!
Fantastic weekend had by all, see you next year xxxxx
awesome pics!
23 is my favorite!
#28 - she might pass out after drinking that much beer
#22 is just awesome :)
BEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fliegerlied zum Milwaukee, Wisconsin
AWESOME pics...it really reminds me the actual Oktoberfest! I especially like the one with the police officer and the flower!!!
superbe pics.....
@ post 150: If you order a mug of beer without telling which kind of beer, you'll get a "Helles". If you want a "Weißbier" you have to say it to the waitress.
I've been there this year, but I definitely prefered the Volfkest in Stuttgart...people only talk about the Oktoberfest because of the history and its reputation, but a lot of places in Germany do the same...and I really had fun in Stuttgart!
Had 6 mugs of beers + 4 shot of schnapps 6 six ago.
I am missing that place... which knock me out totally.
Love German Beer!
#209: Fritz Kaune, this is an article about the Oktoberfest celebrations taking place in Munich. Of course it is going to only cover Munich. An article about the Clan Gathering in Edinburgh would not include a tour of Buckingham Palace, would it?
grande, espero que um dia eu posso ir lá e divirta-se.
I was just there on the last weekend it was crazzzy
2009oktober.17.
I'm from Pennsylvania and I never saw or was part of a celebration such as this. Surely wish I could be. I love the taste of beer but at 64 it reaches my brain sooner than it used to so I don't know how long I would last at such a place.
22... WOW, DeustcheWOW!!! :)
11... Lovely! :)
love
well I am from Munich born and raised there.Have been to countless Oktoberfests, basically they always the same, just gotten sooo much bigger with time, moore expensive, but what isent any moore.
It is still great fun,and yes the Beer is god and the real German food out of this World.
Chcemy wiecej :D
