Remembering September 11th
Eight years after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, we remember and here, take a look back, and a look at the present. This year's remembrance is emphasizing volunteerism and service, honoring the private citizens that volunteered after the attacks and encouraging the observance of the anniversary to be a day of service. Construction at Ground Zero, the site of the former twin towers, is years behind because of construction delays, design disputes and litigation involving developers, state and local officials and insurance companies. At this point, One World Trade Center (formerly the Freedom Tower), the 120-story anchor building on the site, is scheduled for a 2013 completion. (38 photos total)

The center is run by the September 11th Families Association as a museum and memorial to the victims and history of the World Trade Center and the 9/11/2001 attacks. Filipov's father was on American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane flown into the towers. (Scott Lewis)

agrees with comment # 200!! If they actually think that the Government of the United States of America did this to their own citizens and foreign citzens, and you call yourself an American you, Michael Moore and the Dixie Chicks can get the hell out of my country!
Sept 11 lives in all of us. Do not let these "people" ruin it.
#103 Laurie,
It is very heart-touching statement. Mahatma Gandhi's peace and non-violence has inspired the world. I love this mahatma of my country. World believes in him and salutes him.
We need more mahatmas at this time to avoid 9/11 in US and 26/11 in Mumbai. But the problem is Media doesn't let any Gandhi-like people to come forward, atleast in India.
I remember this day because I was in seventh grade and we watched it for the entire day, all of us forced into a silent horror.
We will never forget those we've lost and we should also never forget that we are not alone.
Why do you think this all happened?
The reasons who make people give up their lives must be very compelling.
Don't mention fanaticism, because that's the result of the reasons I am searching for. Instead of erecting monuments, what can you do to find those reasons and fix this?
God bless USA!!!!! My best regards from Barcelona, Spain....
We are USA too!!!! in our hearts!!!!
Thats sad
It seems very fitting that the song "Overcome" by the band Live has come one my MP3 player as i looked at these photos. I am overcome by the emotion that this brings to me. I was in a basic blur during these events due to an injury, so the impact wwas not nearly as severe for me. I didn't watch this for hours, as I often spent many of them asleep. And in some way I am thankful for that. I truly feel great sorrow for the families that have suffered from a cowardly, ignorant, criminal act of babrbarity. These peole were not terrorists, they were murderers plain and simple. To give them any other title, is a disgrace to the thousands that suffered because of their actions.
I am still appalled today by the evil that people can justify doing at times, all in the name of their chosen religion (and I am not directing this comment at one specidically). It is sad to see that we still have not learned from this event, or any since. Please pray not only for the families of this event, but those that are out trying to make our world safer because of it. Whether you believe in the true causes of the wars we are involved in or not, please make it known that we support them. they are our brothers, sisters, parents, friends and loved ones. Make sure that when they return from duty, they truly feel the gratitiude they deserve.
Beautiful but devastating photos. Still hard to believe 8 years later. A tragedy that trancends politics and nationalities........everyone lost something that day.
Just a few days after the attack I found a credit card receipt in my desk drawer at work from the "Greatest Bar On Earth - World Trade Center". And it is dated 07/04/97. Why I kept that receipt I have no idea, but it has become my symbol for rememberance. The lettering was fading so I have scanned it into a PDF document and backed it up several times. Thank you for this poignant tribute.
it was relly sad
The buildings collapsed because Muslim extremists flew jetliners full of jet fuel into the buildings, and because hot metal doesn't hold up as well as cool metal.
Saying that our government demolished these buildings is exactly the kind of insanity that the terrorists want to inspire.
To the conspiracy theorists - you may be seeking the superiority of feeling that you're one of the few that "really knows the truth". You may get emotional satisfaction being part of your extremist community. But know this - you are EXACTLY what the terrorists wanted to achieve. You are promoting and perpetuating exactly the kind of paranoid fear and hatred that led the terrorists to carry out this attack.
With your crazy "9/11 Truth" myths, you are doing everything you can to complete Al Qaeda's mission.
But there is still hope. If you decide to accept the laws of physics, if you wish to surrender your paranoia, those of us living here in Reality will welcome you back with open arms.
#23 is beautiful, the backdrop of the lit up office buildings - lights turned on where there's activity, and in the foreground the construction area which feels more like the leftover of destruction that it is, says to me "a huge part of us was destroyed, but we live on.", which, dare I say, is the New York spirit.
God bless american people, best regards from Guanajuato, Mexico
We love you............................
Saludos
i believe that the life of the new yorkers changed in a better way as ours changed for the 85´s earthquake in mexico city, now they are most closer as community, since i used to live in the us (new york, dallas, miami, chicago, houston, los angeles. etc.etc) i make a lot of friends and since i own my first son birth to this country and his people. i felt so sorry.
god bless the people of america.
wow those pics look really sad i would have been haert broken if one of my family members deid
9/11 is a day we will never forget...
I pray for all of the families and for the 3,000 people who died in the crash.
one of the most terrible days in America... 9/11
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
I cried while looking at the pictures:( They were just devastating.
All that it is made it is paid in each life. Let us pray for the victims, but also so that each human being that steps this noble Earth, never try to make something similar. And the bad..., God will only know which its punishment will be!!!
I'll never forget this day.
To all the American People, thank you for beeing what you are.
Olivier from France
I will never forget and I will never forgive muslims around the world for either cheering or remaining silent. If anyone did anything bad in my name I would be out on the streets protesting; if it was really bad I would be protesting often and passionately - this action required a round-the-clock protest by all 'true believers'. Turning in the masterminds, not chanting their names shows that this scum does not represent you.
I remember !
Aw, don't bring the Dixie Chicks into this. You're wayyy off topic.
And the guy talking about Pearl Harbor is right.Though we will never forget, the next generation will. That makes me so sad.
dramatic...
God Bless America and the american people. Has anybody see that there is one person on fhoto # 3? When south tower collapses it can see on a window, down on the right corner of the photo.
May they Souls rest in peace !
Lets maintain peace and protect freedom.
God bless thee. heartfelt condolences - Indians
Fear, that day it was I feeling.
The world will never forget this tragic fact.
Any kind of terrorism is terrible, because the most of victims are innocents.
God bless the whole world to change the fanatics in people who can Forgive and Love.
Regards from Brazil.
These images still evoke tears after all this time. Most of the sadness has passed but some remains, what has been added is a sense of pride and wonder in the strength of all those touched by this tradjedy
THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY THAT ANY HUMAN BEING CAN BE SO CALLED PROUD OF WHAT THEY DID TO OUR COUNTRY--OUR HEARTS AND OUR MINDS. MAY EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE TERRORISTS ROT IN HELL FOR EVERY THOUGHT AND ACTION PUT ON US THAT DAY. LOKKING AT THESE PICTURES PULLS AT MY HEART STRINGS AND REMINDS ME OF WHAT WE MEAN TO EACH OTHER AND WHAT WE MEAN AS A '' UNITED '' COUNTRY!-------MY HEART AND TEARS GO OUT TO EACH AND EVRY PERSON DIRECTLY EFFECTED BY ALL OF THIS---WE ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!----------GOD BLESS US----------AND MAY GOD SOMEHOW---I DONT KNOW HOW---BLESS THE TERRORISTS,BECAUSE NOONE ON THIS EARTH EVER WILL.
"America ,the beautiful, Alabaster cities gleam undimmed ,by human tears," Here seen through human tears, let us not forget, but be refined through these sorrows. God's grace be poured out on our Country and her people overflowing. Restore Integrity, especially in our Government leaders, but also in every man, women, and child!. We can choose life, a blessing instead of a curse. God have mercy on our enemies and those who want to destroy our Country, from without her borders and those within her. May God's grace and mercy overflow their stubborn hearts and wills, and help them to choose good and not evil! So be it.
amen 190 - it was an incredibly tragic event made even more tragic by people's belief that steel could get that hot from burning jet fuel. Do your homework people - don't blindly say things like "steel melts when it gets hot". Yes, it does, but it would have to be much hotter than jet fuel could ever burn for a much longer sustained time than was possible on that awful day. Don't you think the steel certification labs tested it for airplane attacks (they did)?
The biggest shame is that after the U.S. killed hundreds of thousand in retaliation, the real culprits in Saudi Arabia are roaming around free, laughing.
This moment of history is sad and dramatic. My thoughts go to everyones who lost somebody on that morning.
But to limit explanation to good and bad, evil against god's children etc is a shortview of understanding the complexicity of the world we live in. The World WE ARE ALL PART OF.
Many decisions we or those that represent us (government and corporate leaders) have an impact allover the world.
Our obsession for money, gaz, confort and luxury kill many more people than those who sadly lost their live on that morning.
To make sure 9/11 do not happen again, we have to learn from the past, have a global social view and be concerned.
God don't make any difference between American and other human being.
GOD bless ALL.
Im not from the USA, Im from Scotland but September 11th will stay in my mind forever, when it happened my daughter was only 3 yrs old, there was kids the same age as her that died that day. So many lfes lost that day how evil the world that we live in.
I cry everytime I remember or see something regarding 9/11. My son, who's only 21 still doesn't get it like I do, but he respects the emotions that I've shown over the years by commenting that he hopes he never has to have such sadness in his life.
I can remember every hour of that day like it was yesterday.
May we NEVER FORGET......
This was a crime against mankind, not just the US. A perverted and cowardly act that has changed the way we live forever. May the perpetrators souls burn and suffer for an eternity.
Always remember this day, the United States will never yield
A blessing from China
God Bless their families for their sacrifice, And May God give those responsible the justice they deserve soon. FC1 (SW) Stone USN retired.
I thought I was over this. I guess I'll never be!
I hope that one day the truth will be accepted
god bless the faith people place in our countrys´ leaders, thank god we are now save and comfortable knowing that we have eliminated the enemy in irak and afghanistan, and that with our godblessed anti-terror policies all evil doers will be imprisioned in guantanamo and other prisons.
9/11 has changed the world, nothing so horrible has ever happened, we will prevail, good will prevail, no one will attack our homeland again or our god chosen country will retaliate once more. i can't understand why foreign people want to attack our land, considering how we are always the first to aid countries around the world and have always helped in bringing freedom and liberty to the world.
THANK YOU BUSH, CHENEY, RUMSFELD AND OTHER FREEDOM FIGHTERS!! next stop: Iran
I was on an operating table getting my dislocated wrist repaired at the time of the attacks. The Nurse who wheeled me into the recovery room told me that something terrible had happened, but because I had been anesthetized,I was only vaguely aware. The TV was on in the recovery room and I thought that they were showing "The Towering Inferno"movie. The Nurse said ,"No,this is really occuring".I went home and watched TV for the rest of the day,and broke down and cried several times.I am an Army vet,and 75 years old,but nothing my lifetime has ever effected me like the 9/11/01 happenings.
A person in the falling debris?
Did anybody else notice that there appears to be a person clinging onto a piece of the falling tower? Look in the bottom left hand corner of picture 3 of the falling wreckage; if you zoom in, you can see a person hanging on to a piece of the falling world trade center as it is falling. Truly horrifying.
Boj - "Do your homework people - don't blindly say things like "steel melts when it gets hot". Yes, it does, but it would have to be much hotter than jet fuel could ever burn for a much longer sustained time than was possible on that awful day. Don't you think the steel certification labs tested it for airplane attacks (they did)?"
I suggest you do your homework. No steel needed to melt for it to be structurally compromised it will do so at much lower temperatures if the fires are allowed to persist. In fact that's why extensive fire insulation is required by law on steel structures. By the way that fireproofing was removed by the impacts of the planes leaving the steel naked and vulnerable. As for steel certification labs testing for airplane attacks....in what alternate universe does this happen? Do they also test for blimp collisions?
Manu - "The biggest shame is that after the U.S. killed hundreds of thousand in retaliation, the real culprits in Saudi Arabia are roaming around free, laughing."
I will ignore your ignorant political rant and instead merely inquire why you haven't passed on your knowledge of the "real" culprits location to the relevant authorities?
Marc - "Our obsession for money, gaz, confort and luxury kill many more people than those who sadly lost their live on that morning."
The flu kills lots of people too. That doesn't diminish the horror of the deliberate killing of thousands of civilians. So, what's your point?
Marc - "To make sure 9/11 do not happen again, we have to learn from the past, have a global social view and be concerned."
Yeah, I'm sure Islamic Radicals will totally stop killing "heathens" once we show them we took a university class on global diversity.
this is really sad it makes me just wanna cry...
MAY U ALL REST IN PEACE
nd i hope dat all the kids who lost their parents
can stay happy just for a little
Nobody will EVER forget 9-11. I cannot put into words how tragic and sad this is! Iwas only in 1st grade when it occured. But it has made me feel like I never have before. Its so sad, my prayers and sympothy go out to the families and friends who have lost a love one on September 11. May God Bless America. -Jesus Loves you.
This was a very moving presentation. It was is a vivid reminder of the horrors that occurred that day. It is a very sobering drink. This was one of those events motivated by belief in a god of sorts, but many people here go too far. One commentator said, "Believing in god will always lead to hatred and intolerance." Another said, "Abolish religion and make the world a safer place." These are patently false. It is a very one-sided view of the world that says such things. First, given that the vast mojority of humanity have believed on a god or gods of some kind automatically skews the likelihood that there would be a higher number of casualties resulting from religious beliefs. Second, Yes, great horrors have been done in the name of religion. But there have been great horrors done for non-religious reasons too. The crusades were horrible, but so was Stalin (6-10 million), Pol Pot (2 million), and Mao Tse Tung (50 million) just to name a few. Given the small number of atheists in the world, the horrors per capita of a certain belief system easily puts atheists at number one. Third, not all atrocities committed by religious people are directly attributable to that belief. Most wars were conducted simply because of greed and not because of any religious belief per se. Forth, even those acts which are religiously motivated are not always a logical outworking of that belief system. I would argue that the Crusades are an example of this. They were done in the name of Christianity, yet the Christian belief system does not logically require the Crusades.
These things are far more complicated that is reflected in bare statements like "Abolish religion and make the world a safer place."
# 247, Very well said rebuttal! I don't even know why these people even make comments like those on a blog site commemorating September 11 victims. They should take their speculative trash somewhere else. May God bless the victims of September 11.

I was only nine years old when the WTC was attacked, and I remember as it was yesterday. I only knew about it, in the afternoon when I got home from school. I could never imagine to see something like that. I know it was a really bad thing to the world and to the american history, but it was interesting to see the new path the hole world was taking. I was nine, and I'm 17 now, and I see that the world really has changed. Unfortunately, I see the attack as a response to us activities in the poor countries. And what I think is even worst, it's the still presence of usa in Iraq. It's not a research for non-terror. It's a non-sense war, where americans die for nothing but money(oil).
Beautiful images that brought me tears.

I keep going back to this post and looking through the images. I posted a link to one of my images here (it is a view of Ground Zero when I captured it in July 2009).
The really interesting thing, at least to me, is the question of "Who are you?" In my photoblog post, I write that on (and after) 9/11, for those in New York, the answer probably would have been simple: "I am a New Yorker. I am an American. I am free."
I am still curious to understand how my experience of seeing 9/11 unfold on television is necessarily different from that experienced by someone who was in New York when the attacks occurred. In that photoblog post, I compile some interesting thoughts from a New Yorker as he writes about some of his thoughts and feelings about the attacks on each anniversary of the attacks: http://elbelbelb2000.blogtog.com/archives/6297_1579073640/336212
WTF with the name? "One World" Trade Center? Please, Americans... stop this world domination retorics of yours. No wonder that there are so many conspiracy theories when you are choosing such a pretentious names for your buildings. Maybe you really think it will be a new center for a world establishment, but don't expect that all people around the world will accept it your way.
I hope, after 8 years of that horrible thing, the government from the USA had learnt to have humility and respect for the rest of the countries of the world, I know a lot of USA citizens had always known that, but it's a shame its government don't. If they don't learn this kind of things, then nothing good will be extracted from this tragedy but more hate and intolerance.
cuando las palabras estan de mas...
#262, Just what's wrong with "One World Trade Center"? We live in one world and the builders have every right to name their building what ever they please. You accuse all American with having "pretentious" name for a building as if all American had say in naming the building. We don't believe in world domination, just freedom for those who are oppressed. If your country can do a better job, please let the American government know so that we can use American taxpayer money on Americans. Your reasoning is without merit, take your dribble somewhere else.
9/11 was a horrible event, among others, that opened the door for a faster privatization of the US army. while rumsfeld and cheney hired out government work to corporations these began to benefit from destruction, reconstruction, and then taking care of the wounded in irak and in afghanistan; the whole pack. while we, the citizens of this country, worry about someone attacking us, some private contactors are basically taking huge amounts of OUR tax money to do jobs that our army could and should do, or even the local people in irak. but no, we are too blind and busy to see this, we are to shocked by 9/11 to see the greater damage created after this event. it's so easy to just go with the flow... funny how this comment will be censored and not included here, but my previous and obviously sarcastic comment (244) was posted. as always, the press too afraid of the truth.
thank you
my heart is with those families who lost a loved one ...
lots of love from maldives ...
I would like to comment the visit of Mr. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain, to Washington and Pittsburg taken place these days. Just to remember to the american people that this man was the one that took off our spanish troops from Irak, and the one that did not stand up when your flag passed in font of him at a parade in Madrid. He is a socialist -in the widest sense you can give to this- and is leading Spain to the bankrupt. Do not trust this man, he is in opposition to the common sense and all the western traditions, but he thinks that President Obama is on his side.
I felt the pain, the sadness and the horror just as if I were one of you, because the attacks were made against the western way of living, free people and liberty. You, americans, gave the world a good lesson of courage and compassion. I will always be grateful for that.
to 267 - what do you expect? do you want people to stop zapatero's entry to the US? or to stop spanish people from entering the US?
he is a "socialist" (not really...), so? do you know what a mixed economy is? what exactly is your common sense, no social policy? many countries took their troops out of irak, so what does that mean? why take the troops to irak in the first place anyway?
i think you are quite lost my friend, trying to give a negative image of that president and country ( the majority of spain was against the invasion of irak), specially with those empty and ridiculous arguments.
President Obama: "business is business, but honor is honor; something that your next visitor does not know what it means.
Post 174: You are correct in stating that religion caused this. When people start putting more emphasis on people, who are flawed, than in God, who is perfect, that is when it becomes a religion and bad things follow. And to Post 190: What a whack-job. While not perfect, this is still the greatest country on the face of the earth. You seriously need professional help. How many other countries would allow you to make such idiotic comments without being punished? Not many. Instead of always looking for the bad in America, why don't you look for the good?
im so touched and i cant believe all of them people who lost there lives its so sad remambrense9/11 forever
God Bless America
Everyday i think of you.
You are in my heart forever my sweetheart.
I miss you so Nicolle.
This is super sad I just wanna lay on the ground and cry!
This is sad.
Though I ain't an America, I could feel the pain in them.
When some people lost their love ones within spilt seconds, we just don't learn to cherish those around us.
you know our steel mills went under about the time the world centers was built.do people not realize the towers where not made of u.s. steel. that is why they buckled why they crumbled.....the steel came from foreign soil
People who say we kill over "God" confuse cause and effect.
It is not because of a belief in God that people kill.
People kill - then want a reason to justify it.
Now, why do some kill? Aggression has evolutionairy survival benefits. Too much aggression, or too little, was counter productive. Unfortunately, our primitive instincts live on.
Also, some people's biology and/or environment reinforce certain aspects of all these human conditions.
There are very great, and very evil, people.
I don't want to sound too fatalistic - this behavior should be minimized. I don't think blaming "God" will do it. Most peoples' beliefs in God help others.
ALLAH AKBAR
God bless everyone
this was a shocking inserdant,
i remember it very well.
it makes me feel sick to my stomach.
they are sick sick sick people who did this!
Amazing that all these years and until now American people did not ask them self or think for a monument why they attack us …. !! Why not they attack Japan or Brazil or Norway….!!!!
And God bless everyone

To 171. Patriot Dave:
Yes, let it go. It's time to move on. The US has killed thousands more people than this in reprisals. Sure, yeah, it was sad, but you "Patriots" have exacted enough revenge on the poor of the world.
Let it go.

I feel very sorry 4 the people that suffored thru this very harsh thing.God for give these people that just mess up the world.Very bad people.Rest in peace 4 all those people.Sorry.. :( im very upset
GOD BLESS AMERICA HOPE 2 GOD THAT THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAING THERE ARE JUST PEOPLE THAT DONT CARE ABOUT THE WORLD IN HONOR TO THOSE WHO SUFFERD.
It is regrettable that an opportunity was missed to transform and tranfigure ground zero into a beautiful memorial park of peace (god knows there is little enough parkland in the vicinity!) and that instead it has been decided to re-erect fresh jingoistic monuments to the rabid US capitalism that inspired such terrible declarations of war.
Now that the US is bankrupt thanks to Wall Street and the neo-con deregulationists, one wonders how this phallic folly will be financed.
Taxpayers' money? As if 4000 dead American troops and an endless 'third world' war has not been sufficient compensation.
I AM A CREW MEMBER....... I AM REALLY SHOCKED FOR WHAT HAPPEN...... IT ,TOUCH EVERY COUNTRY DIRECTELY OR INDIRECTELY SPEICALLY THE ECONOMY.... I CRY FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LOST THEIR FAMILY AND LOVED ONE.
I PRAY ALL THE TIME ...God to be with us
.HAVE A SAFE FLIGHT WHERE EVER YOU FLY

1. "...nothing so horrible has ever happened..." => Do you know how many people died in the 1st and 2nd World War?
2. "i can't understand why foreign people want to attack our land, considering how we are always the first to aid countries around the world and have always helped in bringing freedom and liberty to the world."
=> You answered your question here: "next stop: Iran"
I am trying to find a list of all the names of those who lost their lives during these horrific attacks. I am the president of the Warriors Against Crime club at my high school, and we want to host a candle light vigil at our school on September 11th, 2010. We are hoping to have a name on each candle bag in honor of that person. Please if you have any information email me at raider0709@aim.com Thank all of you and God Bless
