World Animal Day 2009
Earlier this month (October 4th) was World Animal Day. Started in 1931, the day was set aside to celebrate animal life in all its forms around the world, and humankind's relationship with the animal kingdom. Collected below are 41 photographs of animals around the world, at play, at rest, at work and more, taken over the past several weeks. [Previously on TBP: World Animal Day 2008] (41 photos total)

Baby crocodiles swim at the "La Boca" crocodile farm in the Cienaga de Zapata national park, Cuba on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009. The crocodile nursery is a top attraction at the park, Cuba's equivalent of the Florida Everglades, the Caribbean's largest bioreserve with 1.5 million acres of mangrove-choked canals teeming with the wildest Cuban wildlife. A crowned solitary eagle flies to its trainer Andres Capdevielle before being released after going through a rehabilitation program at the Buenos Aires zoo, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009. Less than 1000 crowned solitary eagles remain in the world as of 2004, landing them on the list of most endangered species in South America, according to Buenos Aires Zoo's Raptor Birds Rescue and Conservation Project. A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger stands next to a carcass of a buffalo that died from the prolonged drought at Tsavo West national park, southeast of Kenya's capital Nairobi, October 9, 2009. Successive failed rain seasons in Kenya have led to a drought that experts say is the worst in the country since 1996. (REUTERS/Thomas Mukoya) #

A Nenets tribesman sits in front of a herd of reindeers on the Yamal peninsula, in Russia, north of the polar circle, August 4, 2009. The Nenets tribespeople of the frozen Yamal peninsula have survived the age of the Tsars, the Bolshevik revolution and the chaotic 1990s, but now confront their biggest challenge - under their fur-bundled feet is enough gas to heat the world for five years. A zebra rests in an enclosure in the zoo in Dhaka, Bangladesh on September 15, 2009. Grubby cages, inexperienced keepers and poor equipment have long sullied the reputation of Dhaka zoo, but now a string of deaths has led to charges of serious incompetence against its management. A "Gaza-made zebra", (a donkey painted with stripes), stands in a cage at the "Happy Land Zoo" just outside Gaza City on October 3, 2009. Faced with an Israeli blockade, the Palestinian zookeepers were unable to bring in real zebras. Their solution was to paint a couple of donkeys at the zoo, which have become symbols of life under the Israeli blockade, a local attraction and a bit of a joke. (MARCO LONGARI/AFP/Getty Images) #

An international team of scientists perform an autopsy and DNA analysis on Lyuba, a baby woolly mammoth. Sucked to her death in a muddy river bed, Lyuba spent 40,000 years frozen in the Siberian permafrost where her body was so perfectly preserved traces of her mother's milk remained in her belly. An Arctic Fox checks out his surroundings near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland in this image released by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Polar bear cubs, the Arctic fox and caribou herds are among the victims of dramatic changes in the Arctic due to climate change, a study published on September 10, 2009 found. The study published in the journal Science reviewed recent ecosystem-wide studies of the biological responses to Arctic warming. (Eric Post/AFP/Getty Images) #

wow this is awesome! I want to cry..... I always wanted to be a photographer...
Just for the record, after these pics where published, the Zoo in Ramtgun (near TLV) donated a pair of real Zebra's to them... we really don't have anything against them (it's the militant groups in Gaza that make it impossible to have a normal border)
The dog pics are awesome! SO majestic and fearless!
All my emotions moved. Stunning
israel gov. is about to send 2 real zebras in november to the gaza zoo
Excellent compilation
really beautiful, please have a look to my animals' photos (from Kenya and from other countries as well): http://www.flickr.com/photos/benheine/sets/72157621953950132/
Zoos are abominable. Free hamadryad!
Great photos.
Lefti (comment 74), seeing as your aware that the Gaza Strip shares a border with Egypt, I'll assume you also know said border is closed by the Israelis, and your comment was some sort of mistake...
Fotografie Bellissime, Grazie per averle pubblicate
End the siege on Gaza. End the occupation of the Palestinian territories. Stop the violation of international laws. Let in the Zebras, Israel!
#27 is my favorite, but then I love all baby animals.
love my new friend for sending these to me - I'm a bird lady so understand the peace the woman is feeling........thanks for sharing ALL.......Brenda
I am scared of birds but found the one with all the starlings beautiful.
ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING!!! These pictures are beautiful and speak for themselves..
THANKS A LOT ...........THIS WILL HELP ME IN MAKING
REAL SKETCHES.....!!!!!
#19 Awww.... That poor donkey. That makes me mad that people would do that.
These pics are awesome!
WOW....I felt sad for photo 24 and 34 and I hope they are well now. The baby hippo, very cute! I can't believe the Woolly Mammoth baby found and who wouldn't want a hug the largest cat in the world?
Amazingly amazing :)
Hearty thanks for the awesome collection!
Magnífico album de animales. ¡¡¡Felicitaciones!!!
All kinds of mixed feelings, especially of the Men and Women fighting for our Country!!! we must not ever forget what it means to bring another being into this crazy world......I do not like the exploitation of animals either.
nice day!!!!
#41 awesome…
AMAZING!!!!
Now I know where ET come from.... Picture 19!
It's so sad to think that humans think they are different from animals. The way in which we treat our environment will eventually work to ALL our demise. We are all animals and should respect that fact that we are all living, breathing, eating beings sharing a world. The more we can do to save them, the more we're doing to ultimately save ourselves.
so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No 19 is Yoda for sure... May the Force be with you!
#12 is a happy dog!
That's cool i didn't know that we had a world animal day. next year make sure everyone knows about it
Hi there, amazing pictures! just one little comment on picture 40, these are no alaskan malamutes but siberian huskies. Cheers
World Animal Day did not just begin in 1931. Christianity has long recognized the celebration of St Francis of Assisi on October 4 since the 13th century, a great man with an even greater love for the animals.
OH MY GOD I LOVED THE BABY ARCTIC FOX PIC!!!! haha ur so right pierre!!! btw love the name
excellent pictures The baby hippo, very cute! I can't believe the Woolly Mammoth baby found and who wouldn't want a hug the largest cat in the world?
#19 - Gollum in this mother's arms
Humans are poor stewards of the planet. Man is the worst animal of all.
I want that Pygmy Hippo.
The kitten is so cute!
Excelente, una joya universal!
Looking at all the little faces here.. they truly are Aliens/Angels that are here to help us heal ourselves...and we keep returning their gift, not awake enough to see who they are...but gratefully there are enough that can))))
muuuuito bom!
Zebra-donkey broke my heart. What a bitter joke!
Human should realize ; we are but a part of the world only by co-existing can we preserve the fragile pristine beauty of our planet.
After all this is our home.
Sooo cute photos =)
I like 40. Those are some happy dogs there!!!
Very cute photos !
what - no pictures of cage-crammed dogs and cats in oriental meat markets - no pictures of asiatic moon/bile bears stuffed into impossibly small cages for life - - - i guess we're supposed to keep on thinking that these horrors are really not happening - e v e r y s i n g l e d a m n d a y . . . . .
Fantastic pictures! COOL!
In #40,they are Siberian Huskies, not Malamutes. Mals don't have blue eyes. Siberians can have either brown, blue, or a mix. Mal's are also bigger with a different earset.
Too good
All patients have the same rights.
Photo 9
28 is amazing. Also 32 from a scientific perspective. Has anyone ever proposed burying humans in a way that would preserve them that well? not all humans, but maybe a few each decade for future generations to study (if there are still human(oid)s in 40,000 years).
pic 19: yoda
Have no intention of trolling here, but couldn't help replying to the Comment #141: Long before Christianity and Francis Assisi found love for animals, the great Eastern religions (Hinduism and its offshoots) had placed animals @ par with humans and had preached 'Ahimsa' (non-violence and tolerance to all living beings). They still worship cows and not eat them.
Thank you for these wonderful fotos...I love them
These pictures are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They touched my heart!
I Like pictures...but most sad pictures are nuber: 9,21,24 and 29 =(
But they are good. =]
Amazing pictures...!
Thank you...!
That Donkey is suffering in misery! How utterly heartbreaking, poor thing. What is wrong with some people?
Amazing picture......
toutes les photos sont magnifiques et touchantes;!maispuissions nous prendre conscience vraiment ,que les animaux ont une sensibilité une intelligence incroyable et qu'ils désirent comme les humains etre heureux et ne pas souffrir! merçi pour ce beau message;
Unbelievable beautiful and dramatic pictures.
Thank you for the making me smile today!
Impresionante :)
Ez mind együtt nagyon tetszik és csodás élmény.
These pictures are awesome! ! Animals are such a gift to us and a privilege to be able to see and touch; life would not be the same without them.
I especially loved the baby hippo.
Thank you for all the photos you share with us--they are incredible.
# 30 is WoW
God has subjected to man the animals from which he draws many benefits.i just recently happened to think of this,Muslims are forbidden to eat carnivorous animals.animals with fangs and birds with talons.in the ecological cycle, carnivores occupy the topmost position and are the least in number, they have to be preserved, and God knows the best.Islam takes great care to even take into consideration the feelings of the animal Muslims slaughter for God,the knife should not be sharpened in front of the animal to be slaughtered and other animals should not be slaughtered in front of the animal to be slaughtered.Once, a man,on a journey became thirsty,he came across a well and drank from it,afterwards he came across a thirsty dog ,he thought to himself"this animal must be as thirsty as I was"he took off his shoes, went down into the well again and brought water to the thirsty dog.God entered him into paradise.treat the animals kindly, you are not their real masters, they have been only subjected to you by the Most Merciful.

19 looks like Yoda!

Awesome images... some funny some touching.... thanks to all photographers
WOWW!!!hermosas imaganes ,hermosas tomas,muchas gracias!! desde ARGENTINA ! != )
love pics #2 #9 #19,......., infact, most of them
Funny thing that you don't forget to tell us how the donkies were painted in "zebra style" because of the israeli blockade, but you copletely forget about the lion who have had his fangs and tail cut by the same "animal lovers" from Gaza !!!
I think you shouldn't make policy while being in the Animal Kingdom, and maybe watch the mouth a little bit more.
Thank you !
those animals are rad air
Each picture touches your heart in some way.. They are awesome.
each photographes is very very attrective. can't say in word.

Los adoro!!! =).... I love it!!!
Sencillamente espectaculares. Amazing animals, they are beautiful!!!!!!!!!. The World Animal Day is a good chance to thinking about our planet, our nature and our environment. Care for the planet!!!
preciosas........
Excellent Pics!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cute pix. some disturbing but some are awesome..... Post more!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful photos even if I continue to find sick most human behaviour toward animals that do not respect their charater. Animals are not funny, they are the simbol of nothing but themselves.
If man has the need to express himself he should find a human way....
a hippo for Xmas?! lol no way, wild animals should remain in the wild, too many people have wild animals for fun and finally abandon them in zoos because they cant handle them. a wolf is not a dog, and unless you have a lake in Africa, the hippo would not be well and safe in your house :)
Realy very nice pics for all the animal lovers
I love the baboon's hands up close.
If you don't believe in evolution, you are a fool.
Plus, you don't comprehend the splendor of that statement; it is truly remarkable and stunning.
