1st post at last!

Awesome pictures as always. Beautiful spray from the earth.

I was there less than 6 months ago, it was pleasant and quiet, I can't believe the road to the Seljalandsfoss was destroyed. I wonder how they reach the east of the country now? Making it around the other side would take days.

How can people think we have a significant effect on the planet when volcanoes blast immeasurable amounts of harmful chemicals into the air and decimate glaciers? We are told that humans are destroying the planet, but even if all the countries in the world got together to 'pollute' the atmosphere we wouldn't even be able to produce one tenth of a percent as much pollutant as a single volcanic eruption, which happen several times each year. Even if we launch dozens of thermonuclear weapons at the glacier we wouldn’t be able to cause as much damage. No matter how hard we tried we wouldn’t be able to launch enough pollutant into the atmosphere to disrupt aviation in an entire nation.

Oh, but we are _accidentally_ destroying the planet. And if you believe that I’ve got a nice bridge for sale real cheap!

#9 is incredible.

On #6, the road was not washed out by the flood. In reality, gaps in the road were cut by the authorities in anticipation of the coming flood. They did that to try and save the bridge which goes over the river during normal circumstances. This approach seems to have protected the bridge from damage. Work has already begun to repair the cut gaps.

Also, to be clear, pictures 1-8 and 15 are of the eruption which started yesterday under a glacier. The others (where you can see the lava) are from the eruption a short distance away which started on the 27th of March, which was not under a glacier. This earlier one was more of a so-called "tourist eruption", as all the fantastic lava pictures come from that one.

The roads were destroyed by diggers to minimize the damage to the bridges. It will be fixed as soon as the flood decreases enough. The trip around takes about 1 day.

TonyG, if any of the "facts" you stated were true (about volcanoes putting out more CO2 than humans), then maybe you would be on to something. Only problem is, it's all wrong.

Sounds like a possible cure for Global Warming. When Mt. St. Helens erupted we had a very cool summer. How would it be if we increased our particulate emissions by removing catalytic convertors on Diesels. Seems to me that might work.

I left the country yesterday and so unfortunately missed this second eruption. Hope all works out well for the country and its people.

Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon (C), rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)

These pictures are AWESOME! I was stationed in Iceland for over a year. I've climbed some mountains in that area but dont remember seeing the Eyjafjallajökull glacier though. I did get to watch an island be born off the coast in a similar fashion though. After Iceland I went to Sicily.. ended up living on Mount Etna (active volcano).. I dont know what it is I have with volcanic islands! LOL

Yes, it's saying that we don't live on a dead planet like Mars, rather we live on a amazingly geologically active planet called earth.

C02, in case you didn’t already know, is key to generating oxygen from plants, because of this I would hardly put it in the same category as “pollutant”. Unfortunately they link back to the same exact page, which says to me, that is not a reference at all. In spite of what you think I have actually looked into this before, nowhere is there any close-to-accurate estimate on how much pollutant is released by volcanoes. Mostly because nobody has a clue, they are too massive and numerous to measure with any degree of accuracy. If I was you I wouldn’t believe what people say unless I see how they came about that information. If this is _your_ proof it is sadly lacking.

They are from helicopters and airplanes with engines (not jet engines) but no pilot tries to fly downwind to an erupting volcano, so they keep uypwind where it's safer.

To make such a claim is to play it extremely fast and loose with the numbers. Even the low estimate for annual CO2 output is much, much higher than that of a volcanic eruption, or indeed many eruptions.

I also challenge you to find a document, not produced by an antiscience propaganda organization, which produces direct evidence against human-related global warming. There isn't one.

Carbon Dioxide is a naturally occuring gas, as is hydrogen and oxygen. The more there is, the more quickly plants will grow and convert it back into oxygen. (proven and tested science).
You planet saving busy bodies make me sick. The best thing you and I can do is consume less plastic (incl. packaging), and recycle everything.
Forget about world domination by trying to make CO2 evil.

Ever since I took geology in college, wherein we discussed the fact that the earth has gone through periods of increased temps followed by ice ages for eons and eons (and that one leads to the other and vice versa in an endless cycle), I've wondered about humans' real ability to effect the climate of the planet.
This planet is immense and we only really scratch the surface with our puny selves--to think otherwise is simply arrogance and ego. This planet will be here long after we have destroyed ourselves.

Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't reduce the amount of plastic we use or the amount of waste we create, and we should definitely continue to recycle. What I am saying is that the data being used to "prove" global warming due to humans' actions has only really been recorded for the past couple centuries and is such a small sampling when considering the fact that the Earth is BILLIONS of years old. We think we have any sort of knowledge about what the Earth can handle or what's going on? Again, simple arrogance.

The Left claims the world is warming, the Right thinks we should drill the world senseless. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. If you want to concern yourselves with the state of the planet, just wait until the population hits 15 billion by the end of this century. I'm glad that I wont be around to see the mess. All I have to do is poke holes in it, and yes, that’s how science works. It’s called peer review, and everyone is a peer, you just need logic and some basic grounding the laws of thermodynamics. It’s all real easy to figure out, and you don’t need a PHD to see when someone doesn’t want to share their methodology. People who aren’t willing to show how they came to the conclusion they came to and won’t allow other scientists in the same field to reproduce their work, they quit being scientist and turn into paid evangelists.

Yes, all that us humans are doing is upsetting the delicate balance that allows us to inhabit the earth. We will push it far enough to kill us all off, and things may or may not go back. But if Nature decides to burn it's own fossil fuels, better get out of the way.

Thank you! Someone is paying attention. I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy but I appreciate you pointing out the recent earthquakes so we don't miss the real point: OUR MOTHER IS STILL ALIVE. She's just been kicking up dust lately but she'll get our attention sooner or later.

Could i just say that everyone on here debating the ecological aspects of volcano v. humanities pollution are COMPLETELY missing the point?! You all can go back and forth as much as you would like-you won't change each others minds. The point really is that nature will ALWAYS do it's thing, it will create and it will destroy, but it's only in the last 100 years or so that humans have begun to just take and take and take-and that IS effecting the planet we live on. There may be exaggerations as to how much damage we are inflicting thus far, but it cannot be denied that we abuse our planet. Earth may have been around for billions of years, but one celled ameobas didn't drive cars without mufflers, dinosaurs didn't stripmine, and ancient man did not build industrial parks.

Fantastic photos, but you missed the one that really had me gobsmacked: the erupting volcano AND the Northern Lights.

@97: Iceland, unlike Camden, actually has lots and lots and *lots* of roads that really require a 4x4 to get around it. Unless you plan for the car to actually *stay* within the city *at all times always*, and it's not that bloody big a city, you're not going to have any use for a Prius.

CARBON-DIOXIDE EMISSIONS of surface volcanoes are insignificant compared to humans. According to Williams et al. (1992): "Volcanic CO2 presently represents only 0.22% of anthropogenic emissions but may have contributed to significant “greenhouse” effects at times in Earth history."

To anyone interested that means approximately 1 in 454. Remember that there always exists a margin of error, but it poses no significance in this question. The volcanic aerosols are a different story and they cool the earth temporarily.

They are not exactly SUVs, and whilst you see them in the city these cars tend to be more utilitarian than say most North American SUVs. Most equestrians own large cars with good towing capacity to be able to transport their horses, and horsemanship is very common in Iceland, and mostly involves 2-5 horses per rider. Similarly many of these cars are used to be able to cross the highlands, from north to south, which you should not attempt in a small car. Then winter conditions may require well powered cars with a good four wheel drive. Roads are often less than ideal, even route 1 around Iceland is not asphalt covered the whole way. It was not until 1974 that route 1 was completed, before that the glacial rivers underneath Vatnajökull had to be forded, and no small little city car is going to manage that. The culture of solid cars is with us in Iceland for a reason. Granted, there are idiots who own large cars and never use them for anything where a small car wouldn't be just as good, but depending on what sort of a life we lead many of us may need large cars to be able to get around in our wonderful country.

to TonyG LBCA: i think you misunderstand the pollution by humans. yes, i agree that one single volcanic eruption pollutes way more than US or China in a full year, but we pollute the planet in many more ways... your neighborhood may be clean, but your neighborhood isn't the whole world...

Beautiful pictures of the raw power of the earth. Considering the fact that a little burp from a volcano can disrupt the whole air traffic in the whole of europe makes you think what will happen when a big volcano makes a big burp someday.

Yes, it means the earth is now in the part of it's orbit around the sun where the distance to the sun is the smallest. As a result, the sun's gravitation has the maximum effect on earth's core causing a lot more tectonic activity around the world.......

I`m just waiting for the Yellowstone caldera to blow its top.

Thats a 40 mile in diameter volcano.That will wipe out most of the US and Canada to start,and give us a period of perpetual winter because the atmosphere will be saturated with ash.

That should only last about ten years or so accodring top volcanologists , but thats enough time to starve the worrld population of the higher forms of life out of existence , because no summers means no growing season for food.

Seems a bit simplistic to me. What matters is how much there is as a proportion, something like post 118. If you don't provide references, as many as possible, then you aren't really saying anything.

There will be many tons of lavadust in the air and what goes up
must also go down. Hope that it will fertilize rural areas to the benefit
of farmers in underdeveloped countries. That would be a positive

The earth is used to us. Has been living with us for a LONG time. Some would argue it was made for us actually. It takes a blend of arrogance and naivity to say you, yes you can destroy the world. What is a fact is that when the USSR and the Eastern Bloc collapsed there was a great migration. The previously mentioned had already been using the radical environmentalist movement to take little jabs at the free world. After the collapse, the marxists and communists who were defeated by their own failures migrated to the environmental movement. The movement is all about the destruction of the free market economy and personal liberty.
The earth takes care of events like this volcano and even larger natural events in time, just like it takes care of our activity. We have found out repeatedly that the professionals pushing global warming have been lying and fabricating their information. Earth will take care of itself. It is up to us to take care of the scam artists who have tried to execute the idea of a man-made global warming scare in order to have central control and limit freedom and the free market.

Nature is way bigger than any one of us human beings, but when 7 billion of us really work at it we also can make an awful mess of things. The effects of volcanos have lasted far longer than the effects we have inflicted on our planet. In the same regard, volcanos have permanently changed entire ecosystems faster and with more destructive effect, than humans have ever been capable of in short and even medium order.

Humans are more consistent, but have had input for an insignificant amount of time. Volcanoes are more random, but in clusters, they can be devistating. The question is whether the summation of human input will significantly exceed that of nature itself, or if a cluster of volcanic activity -- which has decimated great portions of the Earth at times -- is far more likely to result in a time period not too far from now.

While I don't disagree that human should minimize their impact on the planet, and sustain resources, it is getting to the point that people have made a single, eccentric microcosm out of greenhouse gas emissions to the point that many scientists are objecting to the tunnel vision focus on it. Especially when you take into consideration that a cluster of volcanic reactions have happened before, and could render our input insignificant, should they ever occur in the near future.

Especially when we have many, many other issues -- from plankton to resources -- to also focus on.

A volcano erupting in Iceland has nothing to do with global warming, ect. This is an event that happens on the planet every now and then. Does sort of put us in our place and there is nothing wrond with that.

CQ.....Thank you for that!! I have had this debate countless times with friends and family. Recycling, carpooling, composting....all great ideas. However, as you've stated, ice ages have come and gone for millions of years. The Earth cools and freezes, the Earth warms up again. My thinking, and I don't claim any expertise, is that we are nearing a peak of sorts before the Earth starts to cool off and head toward another cooling off period, possibly an ice age.
All that being said, I lean a little more towards theology than science, with admittedly more faith than proof. I think in the big picture, there is a higher power responsible for everything on the planet and has a plan that we could not possibly begin to understand while the science behind all the climate change studies is very interesting and in some cases, hard to doubt.
I like your final point, which can be made to support either side of the debate, religion or science. To think we have any full understanding of how the Earth behaves, or why, is the height of our arrogance. These scientists are of the same ilk as those who thought the Earth was the centre of the universe or that the Earth was flat. Theories and concepts change and evolve however human arrogance only grows with each new discovery.

Those who say that the volcano produces more pollutants than humanity are wrong. Volcanoes are intense sources of natural pollution when they occur. There net effect is small over time, ours is large and persistent.

I live in Iceland and you should not worrie at all. He will have a wonderful time here. The volcano is far away from where he will be if he is going from south to north.

The thing to watch is if this fissure stretches toward the Laki volcano. It could have severe consequences on worlwide weather. Last time it happened NE had no summer, the Mississppi froze in New Orleans and Tturner painted his stunning sunsets. But even though these pics are amazing they don't come close to showing you this, as you would see this with your own eyes. This is the most amazing thing I have ever seen and heard. The sound that comes from the volcano is really scary but also incredible.
One of the most beautiful thing I've seen was up there, it was in the first eruption, there was a waterfall and very close to the waterfall was another one, but that one was a lava fall, and they looked so similar, the differences was that one was orange and the other one was clear. This is just so surreal.

Nature at her finest. Although she is capable of much more than we have ever seen. The geologic record for the last 570 million years shows this planet is without ice 80% of the time! And she has been significantl hotter than today by 20 degrees.You only have to to go to Central Park in New York City and look at the glacial striations on the outcrop. Central park was covered by glaciers until 25,000 years ago. Who was responsible for warming the planet then?

We all need to re-read 158 by Aat stahlie. Keep the positive in mind no matter what. This is nature. Let it be a reminder of the potential harm of melting glaciers. We need to protect mother earth all we can but she will spew up every now and then. It is her nature............

Humans are foolish to believe these things won't affect us, and even more foolish if they believe it is the hand of an omnipotant being, and that praying will make it all better. The White House announced today that Obama will fly to Iceland to assure the people of Iceland that the United States stands with them in this uncertain time. Apparently he's flying over - hopefully that volcanic ash won't cause too many problems with his plane. I don't know what we would do without him.

You may wish to consider, why are these things are happening. They happen for reasons, hard facts of life reasons. My husband and I visited this beautiful nation of fire and ice in 2007. We traveled on Hwy 1 past this glacier. It is truly awe-inspiring to think of mother nature and the havoc that she can create. We loved Iceland. It is interesting to follow what this unique situation will teach us....

And they say this is the SMALL one! Will the big one nearby go next? We here all hope it doesn't. If Yellowstone goes the whole world is in big trouble!

Wonderful photographs! Volcanos have made the earth habitable. Without their peroidic eruptions we would not exist. They do not signal death and destruction, but signal life and a new beginning.
No need to fear them unless you are foolhardy enough to live on or near their slopes.

We seem to be too busy wondering about the 'green house' gases and 'global' warming. Point to ponder over is what is heating up the insides of the Earth. A 'small' eruption like this has caused difficulties across hundreds (thousands?) of miles. Wonder what would be the result if a large one erupts, or, a few smaller ones erupt in different parts of the world.
With all our scientific achievements and early warning systems, how come we didn't know of this 'eruption' in advance? And, even if we had the advance knowledge, all we could have done was to evacuate people & pets in an orderly manner - but, we couldn't have 'stopped' it or been able to reduce it's intensity. Obviously, the 'nature' is far advanced than all our accumulated scientific knowledge and we should stop tinkering with it. The 'nature' knows what to balance and how to maintain the balance.

After the scars we've inflicted on Her by all the man-made devastations - wars, terror strikes, accidents, natural calamities leading to (mostly) urban deaths - this site, though of a natural rage, almost seems ethereal and beautiful! Mind-boggling... Who cares if it's disrupted flights in the "urban, civilized" world?!! 'Saving the planet' and 'Saving humanity' are two completely different things.
We CANNOT save the planet--but we CAN save ourselves.
Volcanoes do what they do --and could make life intolerable-nothing we can do about that----but we CAN and ARE doing things to ourselves in a way that volcanoes --or any other event DO NOT do.

my husband mostly dont read news papers. he is always busy. but when wanted to hear news about volcano. i did some research and found these pictures. mother nature is incredible. some times she is angry and some times she is quite. we see different forms of earth structures created and ruined.

The pictures there before 14 of April are all of the Fimmvörðuháls (Five Cairn Ridge) volcano which is a small new volcano and is located on a ridge between the Eyjafjallajökull ("Island Mountain Glacier" where the now more powerful erupting volcano is located, it has the same name as the glacier) and Mýrdalsjökull (Swamp Valley Glacier) where the Katla volcano is located in, and thats even a bigger volcano than that which is erupting now, and Katla has always erupted after or with Eyjafjallajökull volcano in the past so "fun" times ahead.

So if I was in Northern or Western Europe id check where I could buy a breathing mask and dont expect flights to be on time in the near future.

yeah and then if Britain and Netherlands give in on Icesave we might turn off those ash spewing machines ;D

iceland volcano will get much more hazardous because known history of past eruptions prove the likely hood of this; if you niaevely think it is only going to erupt 3 times and thats it, you are being very niaeve; continuous water bombing of the volcano plume at 5,000 feet is the best way to deal with the discharge emissions; and then aircraft can fly as normal; also the planets atmosphere will be less harmed; get the watering can out now President Obama Please; thanks love sophia x

Events like these always seem to bring out the Jesus crowd, and/or the doom merchants. It's simply the natural goings on of a very alive planet, nothing else. Most folk find it bloody annoying, but still fascinating and awesome in the true sense 'man'.

My girl is stranded a couple of thousand miles away and very ill, so yes it's very worrying. But even so... we are lucky to be able to witness things like this in our lifetime, I reckon.

I'm really sorry for the many people, who couldn't take their flights, but - I SO appreciate the airplane-free sky above my hometown. Living near Frankfurt, usually you'll see at least two or three airplanes in the sky when you just glance over. Of course you'll hear them, too.

And right now - it's oh so quiet. And the sky is blue and cloudless - this could last forever :) I'm pretty sure, the movement against the new runway will grow in the next days :D

The environmental topic - grown up in the German "green-movement" in the early 80s, I find that new "safe our planet"-thing kinda funny. Of course we can't destroy the planet itself just by pollution. The planet doesn't care how many kinds of animals or plants exist on it. Could be just a rock with rats and cockroaches, still being "happy". It has been for ages and will be for lots more of them after the last human died. But that's not the question of saving the environment.

The question is: how do we want to live? What do we want to leave behind for the next generations? For example: do we want to eat fish without being poisoned due to pollution of the sea or rivers? It's about saving life quality. For us and for our children, too. Or to try it in a different way: is it reasonable to serrate the perch we're sitting on, just because it could also break by "natural" reasons?

The last time the Icelandic volcano had a major eruption, it resulted in the French Revolution. Winters were so severe and summers so cold that nothing much grew. The famine more than bad government drove the French people to revolt. Perhaps if the volcano continues on long enough, affecting the climate and making food scarce and expensive, they will finally have the impetus to revolt and clean house in the governments of the world. Thus far no amount of corruption in the financial sector; collusion in the financial disgrace by the government and mismanagement and incompetence by the government have caused any substantive reaction. You would have thought people would have been storming the Stock Exchange, plundering corporate offices and blockading governmental institutions. When the Supreme Court gave the government to the corporations there were a few grumbles and some dim witted characters, or perhaps corporate stooges actually applauded. Of course when one sees the popularity of Republicans, the general I.Q. of this nation is questionable. It is "they who sold thee" down the river of every crooked and ill conceived deregulation of the banks and brokerage houses who simply took anything that wasn't nailed down because they made up their own rules without supervision.

If the volcano continues on it may be interesting to see what happens next summer.

External combusion enginer, internal combusion engines, friction, heating of houses, nuclear power plants--all of these generate heat that goes into the atmosphere in addition to the desired products. Whether this heat is enough to make the climate worse in another question. Maybe it will make the climate better IF the ash & dust from the volcano decrease the amount of solar energy reaching the lower atmosphere & surface of the earth.

Not so bad slowing down for a short while. When I opened the door
to my garden this morning in West London, the air smelled sweet. Most
mornings it smells of aircraft fuel. All around the air also seemed exceptionally clear and there was a stillness that I have not experienced in 28 years of living in our house. All day I thought how different life feels without so much pollution and noise.
I am aware that there is great inconvenience for many people and that in the long run the consequences of this volcano's erruption could be quite serious. But for today I am justso grateful for air which I can breathe and for the birds I can hear singing.

Creo que son etapas en las cuales el planeta se rebela, hace mucho tiempo - eso se sabe de la historia - que han habido igual erupciones de volcanes y otros desastres naturales y el planeta sigue existiendo, aunque también murieron muchos, se destruyeron ciudades, pero no será el fin del mundo.
No podemos vivir con esa idea. Lo que sí , que ésto se viera como una alerta, que ya es hora de pensar en vivir y actuar como seres humanos.

Volcanic activity associated with the Mid Atlantic ridge and sea-flooring spreading could change the temperature of the water in the Arctic Ocean. It could influence the amount of ice present. Not human caused global warming.

The Melted (Glassiated) particulates that chew the paint of planes, and destroy engines when hit at 3-400 mph up in the Ash Plum has two other problems, I think: 1- as these bits of glass, float down around the world, how to they affect our lungs, noses, eyes these are fibers of "volcanic glass" bits along with gasses,fumes, should wearing "Hajeep" become more common? Or will just white masks for everyone?
2: Floating fibers of glass in our atmosphere, trillions of them I think can deflect, reflect and or prismatically reduce the sunlight penetrating into earth surface, (ground) We live on? "Volcanic (glassiated) Ash" blocking sunlight will give spectacular sky light shows. How about affecting the temperatures of the atmosphere? (sunlight now captured, diverted) from hitting planet surface, (Like Nuke-Winter) would it enter us into another glacial period in the ash shadows, if prolonged..

volcanoe's erupting in world anywhere wont dampen that great british reserve. it was the stiff upper lip that won us world wars .some communitys in the far north complainimg as usual about foul smells etc but you would think they'd be used to it living in close quarters with live stock and anyway there not real brits living that far above watford gap . i blame the icelanders for this stupid volcanoe and mbe sandy toksvig has a few questions to answere about all this . stupid cow.

Hi, amazing pics!!! BUT this is NOT the same volcano in all pictures! I live in Iceland. The one with the lava and fire is Fimmvörðuháls, near by the volcano which is active now. The other one with the big ash-cloud is Eyafjallajökull- and this is NOT a tourist volcano like the one in Fimmvörðuháls ;)

It's just a volcano erupting - that's what volacons do sometimes. Regrettably with unpleasant /inconvinient consequences for many people (thankfully no lives were lost). Dealing with the "fallout" though is necessary, hence no flights over Europe for a few days. But again, it's a volcano erupting, which is what they are known to be doing every once in a while. Keep it real, no need for all this "we-humans-bad-so-small-mother-nature-punishing-us"-stuff.

Having visited Iceland twice in the past 2 yrs, I really feel upset for the Icelandic people. This eruption is so close to the capital city and the impact is being felt so far, as far away as Thailand. Iceland is a very interesting and isolated spot on the globe but it's volcanoes could truly impact the entire globe. Here's to hoping Katla remains silent as for that one to erupt, we could all be effected for years to come. These pictures are phenomenal and show how magnificent volcanoes are but this one is just a baby. Katla is the mother load, let us all pray that she remains asleep for generations to come. My heart goes out to all Iceland. Your animals, farms. and your livelihood after the economic collapse. Please know that someone in New Jersey is constantly thinking of you and praying for you all.

I have a nephew who is stuck in Moscow because of this phenomenon occurring in Iceland....He wants to fly back to London...but only God knows when he'll be able to return. This is nothing like Krakatoa, buddy! When was that ? 1879? There would be NOTHING left of Iceland's island if it was a blowup like Krakatoa was. Same for San Torini in Greek Islands of Mediterranean Sea around 1500BC. Global warmingis part of the natural earth-breathing cycle. It was this warm 600 years ago. In British Columbia a glacier melted back to where its top was about 600 years ago and someone found a dead hunter who was alive when the glacier's top was at that level. Greenland glaciers have been topping up at average 5 feet per year. New air force planes landed there by emergency in WW2 and were retrieved over 40 years later by one of their pilots and a crew of collectors. They were 250 feet down!!!

These pictures are a mix from the 2 volcano eruptions which have occurred in Iceland this year... The pictures with the lava-flow are from the first one which was placed upon "Fimmvörðuháls" which is between "Mýrdalsjökull" and "Eyjafjallajökull". That eruption stopped 2 days before the volcanic activity began in "Eyjafjallajökull". There do not exist any pictures of the lava-flow in "Eyjafjallajökull" because all the lava explodes into the air in form of ash due to that the eruption is below a glacier.

Our Planet is an ainigmatic one.
It can cope just about with anything. Please take care and look after this magnificent earth before it is too late for all of us. Everything has a limit and we are getting close to it. Let us NOT exceed it.

An amazing group of photographs. I have always feared volcanos. Yet we are close enough toone here. I slept very close to one Yellowstone in 1962 when Charlie Nuse and I first came to California. The experience, even inpictures is hard to comprehend.

How many Americans feel that we are kept in the dark as it relates to world events and the reality thereof?

For one, I do not believe what I have heard on local news channels and with the edited versions of interviews that address the reality or possibility that worldwide recent seismic, and now volcanic activity, is connected.

I'm no expert, but my logic and instincts conclude that we are experiencing unprecedented events, all connected, and all are a result of "something" that has occurred or has been concluded with statistical, mathematical, historical certainty.

I for one would like full disclosure, the truth, about what is taking place globally. I don't know about everyone else, but if these recent unprecedented catastrophic events are only the tip of the iceberg in a world that is governed by a natural order capability of healing itself from the abuse / damage inflicted by any event to include meteors, asteroids, pollution, overpopulation, depletion of natural resources, or simply our attempt as human animals conduct unnatural experiments challenging the natural order, or compromising the natural order; Our attempts to control and manipulate nature are arrogant and against God’s will (violate the natural order of things and challenge our higher power).

I want the truth:

First question is the legitimacy of 12/21/12? Bottom line, logic would dictate that there is a recurring event that is foreseeable....and I am not talking about a random event.

Second question is the truth about the interaction between the Earth's tectonic plates? Bottom line, like a jigsaw puzzle, if you push one piece, every other piece is affected. What are the possibilities and probabilities as it relates to recent events?

Lastly, I believe that if our days are numbered, this is the true test of humanity! Perhaps humanity will prevail by coming together as one, and in doing so, be spared by the inevitable?

Remember we are mortal with a maximum lifespan of 125 years. Therefore, the 6 billion humans living today will be dead in less than 125 year by natural cause. Barring war, famine, catastrophes, etc., 48 million will die each year on average naturally...that is 4 million people per month…almost 10 times the casualties suffered during WWII (50 million in total over 7-8years).

So, what is the truth about our future as it relates to shifting tectonic plates, volcanic activity, melting ice caps, rising waters, ice-age vs. drought, magnetic shifting of the polar north and south, 2012, etc?
And lastly, I do not believe people fear death (as it is a part of the natural order); however, people do fear pain, isolation, suffering, etc. I for one would be less inclined to panic if I had a potassium cyanide pill to consume in lieu of the horrifying reality of life "after" the end of times.... I know one thing for sure; I don’t want to be around to rebuild anything!

I was stationed in keflavic iceland years ago and we had 100 earthquakes while I was there. 1966 I believe. What was sertsie(sp) a new volcanic island then. Was wondering if this is part of that island volcano?

I am stuck at home instead of starting my 6 month travel to London, Spain,and U.S.A. but I am still in the comfort of my own home and not like some unfortunates with no where to sleep but in Airports and many do not have funds to help them as they have spent their money during their holiday,and cannot now get home and back to their jobs.

I agree with #461, how irrelevant and small we human beings really are. We think of ourselves as the masters of planet earth and demi-Gods but nature will wipe you out if and when it pleases and we can do nothing but run for cover. This whole prospect of ruling the planet and being the colossal figure in the world is nothing but mere gimmick or "figment of imagination".

These are great pics, but I can't really enjoy them because my mom is stuck in the Netherlands and has no way home to Texas as of now. Because of the many delays on air travel (it seems at least until Friday), she is now looking at alternative ways to get home quicker, i.e. a boat or going to another continent for a flight.
I just miss my mom.......and prayer seems to be the only option now.

I have heard or read that some are blaming this on global warming with the theory that warming has melted some of the ice above the volcano allowing the magma to break through. It is my view that, if a volcano was about to erupt, such a barrier as a glacier would offer little resistance. It is my view that some of the more vehement environmentalists would and will use any device, however inaccurate, to promote their agenda.

Certainly sparked some debate. Very entertaining. pictures and comments.I assume most people are more concerned about humanity and their immediate friends and family than the planet. Let's face it, if we are all gone then who cares what happens to the planet. The flora and fauna certainly don't care. Therefore let's just do our best to maintain this beautiful planet for our sakes, and science alone gives us a clue as to what to do. Not religion, not politics, not philosophy.

It marvels me to think beneath our feet there traps a colossal amout of geothermal energy which Mother Earth releases every now and then to relieve herself. Well, I learned something. I had always wondered at the precision of these
estimates(?) like 344,109 tons. I mean how can they be so certain? Even
344,000 would be close enough. But then I notice in examining the data

Iceland's a beautiful, rugged, Island and the people are just super friendly, helpful,so happy to have tourists. On our tour of Iceland in 2008, we stopped and took pictures and marvelled at the size of that glacier. Now, I wonder what it will look like if/when this 'act of God' plays itself out.

Hi Friends, These photos go on to show that, in front of mother earth, we mere earthlings are nothing. There is no force in the world that can control the natural forces and over the past few years it has been continuously been demonstrated that our wanton way of life is taking a serious toll on the resources and all these happening were just but waiting to happen. I wonder if the earth quakes are symptoms of tectonic activities that result in volcanic eruptions? I wonder is enough lava is drained, will this speed up movement of continental plates?

I believe like some who have left previous comments saying that all these natural disasters lately are Biblical signs of the near return of Jesus, as are all the wars and the horrible idea of numbering people with a microchip. This eruption must have produced an unbelievable amount of volcanic ash to disrupt air service as it has.
I am sure all except the very youngest of us will remember the Mount St. Helens eruption some years ago. I was living at a farm in southern Alberta then, and when I got up the next morning everything was covered in volcanic ash-the ground, cars, buildings, everything. But I don't remember anything mentioned on the news about airlines cancelling their flights. This eruption must have made Mount St. Helens pale by comparison!
I salute the courage of those who got close enough to the volcano to take those awesome photos.
For years I have been fascinated with Iceland ever since I read an article about its having one of the lowest crime rates in the world. While the country is getting so much media attention, I hope we take the opportunity to learn why the Icelandic people get along so well, and make use of that knowledge in our own society.

This pictures are beautiful, the power of volcanoes is impressive, however they do NOT indicate these are the sign of the "last days", most apocalyptic religious organization will cling to these natural events, as the sign that the end is coming soon. however, volcanoes erupting are rare, and despite popular belief earthquakes are not on the rise. They have remained constant they only seem they are on the rise because they have occurred on populated areas. Volcanoes and earthquakes and floods have been part of the planet for a lot longer than people have existed and will be around a long time after all the people are gone. There is nothing to be done about them and a volcano causing inconvenience to humans is not the end of the world.

As I tell my students, we think we can control nature and we think throwing money at various situations will make a difference but in cases like this, there is nothing we can do and even if there was something that could be done, it doesn't mean that there is anything that should be done. Incredible how Mother Nature changes the world. An event in a remote area affects the whole world!. THIS IS GLOBALIZATION.

Well, many of the remarks made have been directed toward the idea that Mother Nature is showing her wrath by doing this and that we have caused this to happen.
But, actually volcanoes and earthquakes were going on thousands of years ago even.
Many of the islands and mountains we have now were made by volcanoes before people were even there.
God surely was not wrathful at the dinosaurs for polluting the earth even though I am sure they pooped enough and ate up whole forests of trees and shrubs etc..
Thankfully we do not have them anymore to deal with.
And, yes, I would say that this volcano and others do more polluting in a year than all of mankind can do.
poisonous gasses and ash falling for hundreds and maybe thousands of miles.
This is not creating cleaner air for us. All that CO2.
More poisons come out of the ground at Yellowstone Park a year than you can imagine.
Does God give us pure air to breathe and is angry because we putt around in our cars?
What about those radon gasses coming up out of the ground and even oil?
All the heavy metals that occur in nature?
Oh, we can fool ourselves into thinking we are making big differences here with our little cities and our roads and things, but most of the pollution got here before we did.

These comments are amazing and some are just downright ridiculous...but one thing is true. This is God and his planet. He is in control and this is his doing. We are the true guardians of the planet. We have not done a very good job but we can always learn. The planet is cleansing itself naturally just like our bodies do...think about it...just on a bigger scale. So, yes, let's hope everyone is taking care of those that need it - the stranded, providing lodging, food and happiness in a drab situation...and maybe the greedy pigs of the world will learn a lesson...

'' For the last past 25 to 30 years ; there as been many major eruption at the National Volcano Park in the Hawai island '', and never the air-trafic as been interupted...*** '' How to explain this mess with this Iceland Volcano ? Same phenomenon in Southtern Italy with their Major Volcano on cecilia Ialand . '' THE VEZUESS'' and no one has ever heard about the SHUT-DOWN of the internationnal airport of ROMA ( ROME)...What about the big Volcano in Central-America few years ago No air trafic as shut-dodn ...SO ! WHAT's GOING ON ?

We have volcanic activity in East Hawaii at the Pu'uo vent that has demolished homes and land; leaving people desperate. Legend has it, the goddess Pele is very angry and raging, but we all know it is (GOD) as Mother Earth and her natural powers that must surface. Yes,times are changing ... WE must respect mother nature and live in "the now". In truth, we must LIVE each day as if were our last ... and be thankful to be alive!!!!! Such destruction as this in Iceland, along with other world-wide catastrophes, IS a sure sign of what's yet to come, regardless of what took place millions of years before us.

In fact, everything he mentioned is something we all need to take into

consideration, and make some sense of all the recent events and happenings in our current lives! Relevance is so underrated, I think.

It looks like the earth is bleeding and the sky is healing it by taking all the poisonous elements away from it. It seems like the earth contains all these poison elements to one place, then it creates a very big sore and the blood cleans it out. Sure I know you may think it is a silly story, but I really believe the earth feels pain and this is only one way it can cure itself. Why wouldn't the Creator make it so the planet could feel itself. If I was the earth, I would want to be balanced and healthy. Why? FOR US! WE SHOULD BE PRAYING TO GOD IN THANKS THAT OUR WORLD DIDN'T COLLAPSE ALL AT ONCE.

#69- Thank you! Finally, someone has posted a comment that is based on reason and evidence and not fueled by superstition. I'm so tired of hearing about how these recent natural disasters must be a sign of the "end of days." Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I guess (no matter how fanatical it may be). However, as the information in the link points out, earthquakes are not on the rise. Nowadays, scientists have more sophisticated instruments for detecting earthquakes, so this may lead people to believe that there are more. Three cheers for empirical evidence.

Thank's for these very impressesive pictures. It is an unbelieviable beautiful
spectacle of mother nature as we say here in germany.
But beside of the beauty we feel the force of eruption down here in the middle
of europe; we can't travel several days by plane anywhere.

Wow, these amazing events really bring out the lunatics in the comments. No, there haven't been any more earthquakes or floods than any other year, and the Icelandic volcanoes erupt quite regularly! Go do some research if you have any idea what that word means. Much easier to rant on about the end of the world than actually come up with facts to support it. It is just that now, with the Internet, we all get to see these amazing natural events (which have, by the way, been going on and on for over 4 billion years) in fabulous color and immediately because of all the crazy people who rush to take the pictures. Amazing world we live in (albeit so briefly)!

Oops,by the way, I was in Iceland in 2008, and it is an amazing, harsh place, with astonishing evidence of the volcanic forces that shape it and created it. I still don't think I would stand that close to those lava flows!!

The pictures are Awesome and extremely scary!! But until this hits home, I for one will have to get up tomorrow and go to work because at the end of the day, week or month, we all have bills to pay regardless. Life goes on no matter what. We can convince ourselves that we can change NATURE but who are you kidding? It's more like NATURE will change us eventually, but until then....happy loving, working, spending, etc.....everything....and enjoy the scenery!!!!:) This is not DRAMA it is simple NATURE!!

Volcano's are now guilty of polluting? Which one of you idiots is going to volunteer to sell the volcano some carbon offset credits? It's how the world has become what it is you fools. We have no way of controlling it and still some whinge about the pollution - this is nothing compared to what has already been and will probably be again.
STOP believing journalists and politians and wake up please.......

wow!!!!!!! it's hard to believe this is really happening.....nature is such a magnificent force. what else can i say, i'm glad i'm not stuck in an overseas airport, for sure. travellers must be getting very very antsy and impatient, no choice but to hang in there. someone said on facebook earlier this evening that wouldn't it be wonderful if all the music bands had a big jam session in an airport and that could really pass the time!!
