Japan: New fears as the tragedy deepens

Continued aftershocks and new earthquakes bring new fears to the survivors of the tragedy. Residents prepare for radiation leaks as the Prime Minister asks everyone to remain indoors - in their homes, their offices and shelters. Ninety one countries have offered help to Japan. Search and rescue and recovery continue in the devastated landscape. The death toll rises, but some hope is realized in the reunions of family and friends. -- Paula Nelson (52 photos total)

Evacuees are screened for radiation contamination at a testing center, March 15, 2011, in Koriyama city, Fukushima Prefecture, northern Japan. (Wally Santana/Associated Press)

... ¿ cuando ya sea demasiado tarde ?

After I saw the pictures...the one question that came was - Where is God?

The extent of devastation and the heart-wrenching photos makes my heart so heavy...I wonder, how the people who have survived the earth-quake, the tsunami and now the radiation leak, are actually living...what would be going on in their minds...I can only imagine the loss and the trauma that is being felt by the Japanese people.

Please be strong, please stay put and fight the fear and the sorrow, please make Japan the most developed again. We are all with you in this sad moment of yours...My heart aches as I write this...though nothing compared to what you are going through...but stay strong...stay strong...stay strong...

Love & well wishes from India & the globe

I would rather have seen the images in reverse order.

The actual earthquake/tsunami consequences in coastal cities deserve more attention than possibly dangerous power plant emergency where all lives lost are seconday indidents so far.

We lose the focus of the real tragedy, if we concentrate our view on atomic fears. I would not like to see Big Picture as one of the news media that promote such fears by their editorial choice of putting images in 'nuclear first' order.

While the comments here are truly lovely, and they do much to offset the hatred I've heard (thank you), I have to say the utterly SENSATIONALIST line at the top really upsets me. I'm in Japan, in Osaka (500km from Sendai). I have NOT been asked to stay indoors. Its just the people within the 20-30km radius from the plant. The radiation in the immediate area of the plants is dangerous but unless you're going there to inhale deeply and roll around in the slag, you are NOT in any great danger. Radiation IS increasing in the surrounding areas but not to levels that will affect health. There is a difference in microsieverts and millisieverts.
Its worrying yes, but not worth the flail and panic that the American media is making it out to be. Fukushima is NOT Chernobyl. I suggest you tune into NHK World Online and watch the news from the source country. NHK World reports in English and provides English translations when following live Japanese reporting.

When you print radiation dosages (like for picture 3), can you at least be responsible and put it into context - 0.6 microsieverts/hour is about a thousandth of the dose you get from a brain scan! Average natural background is actually about 2 millisieverts/year which is about 0.25 microsieverts/hour (it's actually about triple that in the US anyway) - so while the radiation is a little high, it is well within safety limits.

My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Japanese people. I sincerely hope that they can weather this tragedy. It is my fervent hope that all who commented will be moved to donate money to help ease the suffering of the Japanese people. When I get home tonight, I will not have spent the day searching for water, or food, remnants of my belongings, or missing loved ones. I will go home and simply be ungrateful for the many blessings that I possess. May God in his mercy visit the many Japanese people who are most in need.

I am pretty sure that the one and only one Japan, and the bravest of the bravest Japense people will be able to fight against this and will surely come out of this incomparable sorrowfulness situation. we forget that the earth is a living organism without emotion, and that we are all susceptible to its actions and reactions toward stasis. we are but the temporary tenants. the japanese people probably understand this better than most. but they are enduring the very worst it means to inhabit this volatile coil. our deepest respect and care go out to them caught in this moment of time.

To all the Japanese, my heartily condolence to you brothers & sisters. The scenarios are so pathetic, must be more dangerous in real. People have died & huge destruction is happened after the massive earthquake & tsunami.
We, Bangladeshi people are always with you. Don't feel that you're alone in this tragedy. Japan was always beside us. We won't lag behind in this critical situation. You people survived after the second World War. Why not now? Please be strong minded. We pray for you all so that you recover very soon.
God, please be kind to them, to all of us, all mankind...

These photos are the ones I have been waiting to see, to fully grasp the enormity and the individual human suffering. I am chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for the repose of the deceased, for the suffering of the survivors to be relieved as soon as possible, for the protection and safety of the searchers, and for the nuclear plants to be out of danger as soon as possible. How heroic are those nuclear plant workers, how precious their lives; I also chant that their sacrifice will not be in vain.

I am living in Kanagawa, Japan. We have never seen pictures like these from Japanese media. Of course, they considered the feelings of compatriots. But we should look reality in the face, however it is painfully. Rescue workers and self defense soldiers are hard working in affected area, and they treated bodies respectfully. People in affected areas are enduring this hard situation. All of them is telling us that we should do the best we can do.

No.44
That grandmother was holding 3 years old her grandson when a rescue team found her. she tried to saved her grandson. The mother who lost her mother and son said she avoided to see their body because its too sad to see their body.

According a news, a married couple who were looking for a their 9 years old missing son, went to play ground and found 4 children's body under the mud. their son was there too. they were very sad but they said that they were lucky because a lot of people still can not find their family's body but they did. what a strong parents...Im so sad to hear that news but this is what happening in japan now...I still cannt believe it...

To all the people of Japan......I think of you every day and join the rest of the caring people on this planet in feeling great sorrow about the fierce powers of nature that dealt you an unimaginable blow. A huge earthquake was more than enough. A huge tsunami was more than enough. The nuclear power plant threats are more than enough. To have to face three such horrific events at the same time is beyond comprehension. The thoughts and prayers and support of people all over the world are with you.

Everybody is offering love and prayers to the Japanese people. Its high time that Japan would also love and Pray to our Living God. I heard 2/3 of the population is either an atheist or does not believe in the existence of our LIVING GOD. I hope this tragedy would give them a new perspective to seek and know more about our LIVING GOD so they start to love and serve our LIVING GOD. Try reading the BIBLE and seek out the last and true prophet of our LIVING GOD in our last days. He is currently now in America but he is constantly travelling to spread GODS message in the
world. He is also known as EFS.

I noticed that the fallen people of Japan were respectfully place on a mat and covered. I think that shows the honor they feel for their people. I am hoping the loved that is given to Japan from around the world will be felt by them. There is nothing greater that brings people together than something devasting such as this. I send my love to all the people who are hurting.

Peace be with you the people of Japan.
