It's no secret that South Boston, home of rough and tumble Boston politics, feisty resistance to forced busing, Mr. Bulger's Transit Authority, and what is thought to be the first Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the nation (predating the one in D.C. by a year), has changed forever. A neighborhood of working class city survivors has been gentrified in ways few would have dreamed in the 70's, 80's, even 90's. And all during  the last decade. Nowhere is this more evident than City Point.

                                                  Southie is whose hometown?

At the Castle Island end of South Boston, City Point has seen property values rise to some of the highest levels citywide because it is close to downtown and has some very nice ocean views. While we seldom visit, we remember well the days when the special characteristics of City Point were an internal matter. And if long time residents long for a return to that era, today's influx of newbies shares less of a sense of Southie history, probably wondering why it wasn't 'discovered' sooner. A corner of the city that was once considered safely in local hands is now for sale to the highest bidder.
