3 of 4 towns say no to overrides
Faced with a sagging economy, voters in three of four towns were in no mood yesterday to approve property tax increases. Voters in the blue-collar towns of Holbrook and Chelmsford along with well-to-do Harvard all rejected property tax hikes. However, Randolph voters approved a multimillion-dollar infusion for its troubled school system, which is at risk of a state takeover. (By James Vaznis and Christine Legere, Boston Globe)
Colleges' final frontier: mixed-gender housing
In the Woodstock era, the advent of coed dorms caused a stir, with Life magazine proclaiming the development "an intimate revolution on campus." Coed floors came along over the next two decades, giving college students immediate proximity to each other. The next step, coed suites and bathrooms, brought the sexes even closer together. (By Peter Schworm, Boston Globe)
A quest to create life out of synthetics
It is science so new that even Harvard does not yet offer a formal course in it, although some of the field's pioneering research has been done at the university as well as down the avenue at MIT. (By Colin Nickerson, Boston Globe)
With babies, words for wisdom
The advice is simple: Talk to your children as much as possible. It's a recommendation that many parents might take for granted, but one that Boston educators are trying to spread to low-income families to give their youngsters a better shot at school. (By Tracy Jan, Boston Globe)
Marketing is the ticket for Mass. state lottery
If you play the lottery - and most Massachusetts residents do - the state knows a lot about you. It has studied your beliefs about success and luck, and it has considered whether you would prefer diamonds or leprechauns on your $5 scratch tickets (diamonds, by a long shot).
