The City Seen from The Boston Globe
ROXBURY -- At the Mosque For The Praising of Allah, on Shawmut Ave. in Roxbury, men and women spill onto the sidewalks following Friday prayers. Greeting each other are Abdul Jalil DanFodio and Abdur Rahman. Other congregants put money in a donation, or Sadaqah, box. The mosque's imam, Abdullah Faaruuq, says this is the oldest continuous mosque in Boston. It was established in 1973 and is composed mostly of native Africans, African-Americans, and a small number of Arabs and Indo-Pakistanis. 'I have very American interests,' says Faaruuq. 'I'm concerned for the people who come from overseas who don't truly understand what we're doing here. Sometimes they come with misconceptions of what American life is, and so it's my position here to act as a fulcrum or a bridge between their understanding of Islamic life as it is lived here in the United States.'
