EAST BOSTON --
Everyone knows that weight and obesity are widespread problems, especially among young people. In most cases, the remedy is the same as it has always been: diet and exercise. For six weeks each summer at the Harborside Community Center, overweight kids go through a program called Let's Get Movin' that involves them in physical activity and gives them nutritional information. At the end of a hot game of late-summer soccer, the kids raced into the pool to cool off. Sponsored by the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University, coaches encourage kids to play field games, swim, tend a community garden, learn to kick box, and take a hip hop dance class.
