Thanks for not fakin' it, Deval
When you're a politician, you're supposed to be into sports. It's just one of those things that you have to do, like kissing babies or making speeches. So Gov. Patrick should get a little credit for "enjoying a quiet weekend at his vacation home in the Berkshires" on Saturday as Bruins fans from all over the region thronged the team's parade route.
He's not a hockey fan. Who care? As I pointed out in my definitive guide to Bruins bandwagoneering, there's nothing wrong with latching onto a suddenly successful home team — the far graver sin (relatively speaking, of course) is to overdo it, to act like you're into something you're not.
If you want an example, look no further than John Kerry, who referred to goalie Tim Thomas — seriously, the one name even the most casual Bruins fans know — as "Tim O'Brien" (Tim O'Brien, it should be said, it an excellent novelist).
This was probably just a slip up, but Kerry has already absorbed a fair bit of ridicule for it. Suffice it to say Patrick made the right choice by staying home.
