In the Gates incident in Cambridge, three principals were surprised, in ways they should not have been. Obama should not have been surprised that his "stupidly" remark caused a reaction. Crowley should not have been surprised that his appearance in Gates's house caused his vituperative reaction, and Gates himself should not have been surprised that an officer responding to a possible burglary would demand his ID.
