Mayor Menino is a dapper dresser, but he may have met his sartorial match in Michael Flaherty and Sam Yoon. The two city councilors, according to yesterday’s Globe, coordinate their outfits each morning before going forth to campaign against the four-term mayor. The so-called Floon team doesn’t seem fazed by its inability to correlate on big-ticket issues, including exorbitant police details and local-option taxes on meals. But God forbid that Flaherty and Yoon should wear clashing outfits during one of their many joint appearances.

Flaherty is the official challenger on the Nov. 3 ballot. He gets to wear the long pants in this race. Yoon, his unofficial running mate, has been promised a deputy mayor position if Flaherty wins. Think knickers or a sailor suit with a big collar. Bostonians, however, shouldn’t get too caught up in this fashion contest. It’s the city bond ratings from Standard & Poor’s, not Esquire reviews, that determine whether mayors look good.
