TODAY, VOTERS in Boston and Newton must choose leaders to guide their communities through trying economic times. In Boston, the Globe editorial page endorses incumbent Tom Menino for mayor. While we are encouraged by his strong record of financial management, we also urge him to take the opportunity, in an unprecedented fifth term, to foster a dialogue about the future of the city. In the race for City Council at large, the Globe endorses incumbents John Connolly and Steve Murphy and newcomers Ayanna Pressley and Felix G. Arroyo. Most district councilors have only nominal opposition. Council District 7 sorely needs new leadership, and Carlos “Tony’’ Henriquez can provide it.
We urge readers in Newton to support Ruth Balser for mayor. Currently a state representative, Balser has shown a commitment to her community and much-needed grit.
