Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's mutterings in 2008 that Barack Obama was "light skinned" and had no "negro dialect" reflect a stunning insensitivity -- but not enough to justify the Republican calls for his re-election. Reid was offering his analysis of voter attitudes; by contrast, former Majority Leader Trent Lott, who praised Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential campaign, was endorsing a segregationist platform.
