In a standard practice for governors, Deval Patrick met last week with more than 1,000 Muslims to hear their concerns. Unfortunately, independent gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill decided to try to turn this unexceptional example of constituent service into a gotcha moment. In the process, he slandered the state’s Muslim population.

“Governor Patrick should stop playing politics with terrorism and focus on protecting all the citizens of this Commonwealth,’’ Cahill announced. Either Cahill is accusing the Muslims who met with Patrick of having ties to terrorism, or he is implying an automatic link between Islam and terrorism. Either way, he’s out of bounds.
