The segregation in Boston's fire houses is the result of choice, not official policy. Firefighters can choose where to work, and most choose to be alongside their friends and family. But in communities where diverse crews are necessary -- especially where multiple languages are spoken -- the fire department should take action to ensure that the population's needs are being met.
