As violence mounts in Egypt, need for civilian rule is urgent

The clashes that erupted in Egypt this week between civilians and military troops have left 23 dead and over 1,700 wounded, a higher level of violence than during the February revolution. Now, the military appears to be backing down, announcing yesterday that presidential elections will occur within six months. The transition to civilian control should begin immediately, and the military should make clear that it intends to fully cede power as soon as a president is elected.
