It may be tempting for passengers to try to slip on a Green Line trolley and avoid paying the fare of up to $2. But in doing so, they’re imposing significant costs on law-abiding T riders. The MBTA is currently deep in debt. While reducing fare evasion would not fix the T’s balance sheets, it would at least help. However, the current penalty for fare-dodgers is far too lenient to serve as any deterrent.
