Near the end of “Unguarded,’’ the ESPN documentary about the addiction struggles of former pro basketball player Chris Herren, there is redemption. He says that sobriety has brought him a kind of peace he didn’t have when he was a hot-shot high school player in Fall River, a college star, or hometown hero playing for the Celtics. Nonetheless, addiction among pro athletes is rampant, and teams should do more to combat it.
