As the United States pursues an agreement between the Afghan government and Taliban rebels to end the decade-long war, the status of women hangs in the balance. This week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted that the United States would not turn back the clock on Afghan women. If so, the State Department needs to react strongly to the most dramatic examples of the repressive double standards in Afghan life.
