To judge by all the beautiful people congregating in New York this week, nothing could be better than to be rich, happy, and skinny at Fashion Week. But underneath the glamour, the strange and sometimes pernicious relationship between high couture and authoritarian politics cast pall over the celebrations. It is the empty chair of last year’s high glamour First Lady: Syria’s Asma al-Assad.
