The Holocaust's other victims

November 18, 2007

MY MOTHER is a Dachau survivor, Polish, and a Christian. I wrote to Beverly Beckham to congratulate her on writing a piece about the countless millions of Poles who died at the hands of the Nazis in Auschwitz, regardless of their creed, sexual orientation, political persuasion, and physical ability ("At Auschwitz, confronting the unimaginable," local Sunday sections, Nov. 4). Indeed, the first inmates of Auschwitz were German criminals and Polish (Christian) political prisoners.

Given his comments, Charles Glassenberg, who responded to Beckham's article with a letter in last Sunday's Globe ("Glaring omission in Auschwitz piece"), should understand how Polish Christian Holocaust survivors have felt for the past 60 years, when the deaths of 3 million Christian Poles have typically been referred to as the "other" victims of the Nazi camps.

Auschwitz demonstrates that none of us is exempt from genocide. It is only by emphasizing our commonalities that we can work toward preventing such horrors from happening again.
