IN LIGHT of the National Research Council's report on Boston University's proposed biosafety lab, I am shocked that Mayor Menino's response was that the facility is "too important not to go forward" ("US review of biolab inadequate, panel finds," Page A1, Nov. 30). With both the council and the director of the National Institutes of Health raising serious concerns about the analysis of the lab, I'm embarrassed by the mayor's statement, particularly because he should have an even higher duty to city residents.
As a resident who lives close to the lab, I hope to hear more thoughtful statements from the mayor on this issue.

WHEN THEY finish that lab, in addition to the usual big brass plaque at the main entrance, I would like to see one for each person of authority who said this would be safe. It would include each person's name, address, and phone number. Each could be enclosed in a box like a fire alarm, to be broken open only in case of emergency.
