Trucking safety in driver's hands

December 28, 2007

THE DEC. 26 editorial "Hazard in the rotary," on the gasoline tanker truck accident at Everett's rotary, states: "but even cautious truck drivers routinely accelerate through and exit rotaries at high speeds." It also says the ride is a lot scarier with older trucks lacking the latest safety features.

I am a card-carrying member of the truck-driving profession, and I have a Class A tractor-trailer license. I drive occasional trips long-distance. Cautious truck drivers do not negotiate rotaries at high speeds. Hence, cautious drivers do not flip over their rigs. Furthermore, the age of the truck has little bearing on whether the rig will tip over.

The entire matter of trucking safety is in the hands of the driver and others on the roads.
