Work together toward healing

January 4, 2008

I COULD not agree more with the central point of the Jan. 1 op-ed by Robert C. Bordone and Robert J. Bowers ("Slow healing in the Catholic Church"). Frank dialogue and active listening are indeed essential ingredients for healing in the church of Boston. But at least two other things are vital. First, we need to put aside the hermeneutic of suspicion that promotes conjecture as fact. When and how, for example, was it established that Pope Benedict XVI decided "to avoid Boston"? Second, the massive work we need to do for healing in the church will be in vain if we do not actively invite Jesus Christ into it. For us Catholics there is no other name or game by which wounds will be healed and we will be truly reconciled.
