Behind disability data, a tale to tell

January 14, 2008

I AM writing in regard to the online list of Boston firefighters on injury pay that accompanied the Jan. 11 article "Fire Dept. disability backlog costs city."

Once again the Globe is using a sweeping generalization to portray an entire group. Did your staff do any research on who was on that list and why?

My brother is on that list. He was laid to rest on Jan. 7, after battling cancer since 1999. What's missing from your coverage is that he fought his cancer for several years, and that once he received his doctor's clearance, he was back on the job. As his condition worsened, however, he was unable to return to work.

After two Roll of Merit awards for saving the lives of others, a distinguished career, and a reputation as a tough-as-nails firefighter, doesn't he qualify to earn a paycheck to support his devastated family?

I can only imagine how much it would have pained him to see his name included in that list.
