Fringe role? Kucinich spoke for many

RE "KUCINICH drops out of race for president" (Page A14, Jan. 25): Most of Dennis Kucinich's limited air time emphasized his views on UFOs, his wife's beauty (and tongue studs), and his small stature and large ears, but his policy views were rarely examined or placed in context.

Surprisingly, his priorities mirrored those of the general populace more closely than any other Democratic contender. Polls have consistently shown that a substantial plurality, if not an outright majority, of Americans support rapid and permanent departure from Iraq, single payer health insurance, repeal of tax breaks for the wealthy, energy independence, decreased corporate control of politics and the media, and impeachment hearings against Vice President Cheney.

How a US congressman holding these views ended up being portrayed as a fringe candidate speaks volumes about the sorry state of our political media.
