DiMasi's clout wielded like a club

March 23, 2008

THE OUTCOME of the casino gambling issue in Massachusetts was essentially decided by one person, Speaker DiMasi, a man who was elected to his position by a small percentage of the citizens of our state. DiMasi has used his position and the inherent power associated with it to twist arms and influence votes in a way that is decidedly undemocratic. For days we read of yet another DiMasi lieutenant who was leaning toward changing his or her vote to side with the speaker. Since our form of government is one where the people are to decide their own fate, maybe we need to make a few changes to our constitution to ensure that the will of all of the people is followed.
