Reenactments aren't so true to history

April 25, 2008

I CRINGE every time the Globe reports on the reenactment of battle scenes by war buffs as in the April 22 depiction of scenes from the Revolutionary War ("No shortage of redcoat volunteers on Battle Green," City & Region). I am reminded of the first sight that greeted Walt Whitman when he sought out his wounded brother at a Civil War hospital in Washington, D.C.

He saw a great pile of amputated arms and legs outside the hospital. Such scenes tend to be missing from the colorful role-playing. When will people see through presentation of battles as some sort of "glorious" and "heroic" activities?

Will we ever see a reenactment of the wars in Korea, Vietnam or Iraq? If so, then people can look forward to colorful renditions of napalm attacks, simulated defoliation, and shock and awe.
