CANDIDATES AND CLERGYMEN

Put them all under microscope

April 30, 2008

WE HAVE been reading for weeks about Hillary Clinton's and John McCain's calls for Barack Obama to further distance himself from his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Again last week, Senator Clinton said that Wright "would not have been my pastor."

No, that person, at the time of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, was the Rev. Billy Graham. According to Senator Clinton, Graham was "personally there for me." But we all knew then, through a declassified Nixon White House tape recording, that Graham harbored some extremely hateful ideas about Jews.

Senator McCain, like Clinton, has taken his own holier-than-thou (excuse the expression) attitude toward the Obama/Wright matter. Last year, McCain announced that he was mourning the loss of the recently departed Rev. Jerry Falwell as "a man of distinguished accomplishment." That is the same Jerry Falwell who said, just two days after Sept. 11, 2001, that he was pointing his finger in the face of pagans, abortionists, gays and lesbians, the ACLU, and People for the American Way for helping to make the Sept. 11 attacks happen.

I wonder how the senators' savior would view this hypocrisy.
