GIFT OF A GAS TAX HOLIDAY?

A greener alternative

A greener alternative
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the Globe's view regarding the futility of the gas tax holiday proposed by Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain ("Empty rhetoric by the tankful," Editorial, April 30).

I've come up with an alternative that is both environmentally friendly and may put more money in the pockets of US consumers: Double the redemption values of bottles and cans for the summer. Not only will my plan promote greener living, it will teach Americans a new skill that will allow them to survive during this recession.

No time for pandering
HILLARY CLINTON and John McCain are sending the wrong message to the American people by proposing suspension of the gas tax for the summer. We are near a crisis stage on oil supply, and we need strong leadership, not pandering for votes. Gas at $4 a gallon may be tough now, but future higher prices and allocation schemes are written on the wall for all to see. Give us strong medicine, not a pat on the head and a trivial gift for the summer.

She stoops to conquer
I AM 67 years old, I have always voted, and I've always voted for Democrats, but if Hillary Clinton continues on her Republican-like path and wins the Democratic nomination, I may have to sit this one out.

The straw that broke the camel's back - proposing, as John McCain has, a suspension of the gas tax during the summer.

I too would like lower gasoline prices, but I would also like roads and bridges repaired so I can drive safely.

When the nomination process began, I was torn between Barack Obama and Clinton. As it proceeded, I could have voted either way.

But, as Clinton continues to do and say anything to gain the nomination, I wonder, will joining the National Rifle Association be next?
