GRAHAM ALLISON and Robbie Diamond do not go far enough in their April 29 op-ed "Averting an energy crisis."
Energy is without question the lifeblood of our national existence. And in addition to being overly dependent upon a supply from regimes that are unfriendly to America, unstable, or both, we face permanent competition from China and India (2.4 billion people combined, or 36.8 percent of the world's population) for our energy. Such is the fragility of our economic well-being.
What this country needs is an all-out "Manhattan Project" to solve this crisis, one that will offend everyone. We must conserve, tax, tax-credit, drill, raise fuel economy requirements, use coal, build nuclear power plants, and seek alternate energy sources from wind, solar, etc. Nothing but an all-encompassing effort over the coming decades will work. Our problem is that our elected leaders are too busy micromanaging their next election to come clean with the public and let it know the potential for disaster and the sacrifices that must be made.
