It's not City Hall we're fighting, it's the plaza
CONTRARY TO what certain out-of-towners think ("A nay vote on City Hall," Letters, June 13), there are many non-architects who live in Boston who can appreciate City Hall as the innovative design it is. We don't have any problem with the City Hall building, and consider ludicrous the concept of moving the offices inside it to a non-downtown area such as the wasteland of the South Boston waterfront.
What we would like to see instead is a redesign of the brick expanse that is the plaza around the building. That vast sea of red is one of Boston's most underused public spaces. Even when the Big Apple Circus or Scooper Bowl is taking place, about 75 percent of the brick space remains sterile and unoccupied. Replace that 75 percent with grass, trees, and a working fountain or two. Put in free Wi-Fi access and a cafe as in Post Office Square. Then we'd happily live with the current City Hall for the next century.
