New Yorker cover speaks volumes

July 17, 2008

I AM shocked by the insensitivity of The New Yorker in printing a drawing on the cover of its July 21 issue of Barack and Michelle Obama standing in the Oval Office with an American flag burning in the fireplace and a portrait painting above the mantel of Osama bin Laden ("Caricature brings attention, irritation," Page A4, July 15). Imagine the Obamas' young daughters waking up to see their mother depicted in this horrific way.

Throughout history it has been through the visual image that information was spread. The artistic image often speaks volumes beyond the written word, and for this reason the drawing may reach far and wide in denigrating a most honorable man and his family and place a dark stain on his candidacy for president.

I urge all those with a subscription to this magazine to cancel it in protest.
