Dance is here to stay

WHILE "THE Beat Goes Off" in clubs (Page C1, Aug. 3), it pulses ever stronger in parks, yoga centers, school gyms and cafeterias, and church basements. Contrary to Wesley Morris's dire outlook, we are in the midst of a dancing renaissance, with forms like barefoot boogie, contact improvisation, Five Rhythms, JourneyDance, and YogaDance returning dance to a spiritual practice that connects and energizes.

As part of Dance New England's Dance Friday, dozens of us ages 4 to 64-plus free-style in a safe, alcohol-free, and smoke-free environment. Listening to music ranging from Queen Latifah to techno to Beatles covers, we leap and spin through space to express ourselves through movement. Here, the uniting common denominator of dance still exists, revolving around trust of our inner dancer rather than the false idols of television.
