First step should be halting fare evaders

RE "T warns of fare hike if agency is not rescued," (Page A1, Aug. 5): What the MBTA needs to do instead of instituting yet another fare increase, which would only punish innocent people, is monitor its train station turnstiles and stop the fare evaders who are bilking the agency.

I have watched people run through the turnstiles in groups of two, three, and even four at a time, thereby getting passengers onto the train for one fare. This is resulting in huge losses of money for the T.

Fixing the turnstiles so that an alarm would sound if more than one person tried to go through would be a huge help. Until that time, the T should have its officers monitoring those turnstiles - especially in really busy stations like Quincy Center and South Station, where fare evasion is rampant.
