Papers struggle, but Globe can do better

I AM in agreement with David Shoup's (at age 17!) well-stated letter about his disappointment in the Globe. I have been on the verge of canceling my subscription for several months now, but I do like to read about local news and I like the editorial and op-ed pages (however, I am not interested in knowing about Tom Ashbrook's favorite places, as in Thursday's paper, but in educated commentary and analysis).

I don't think domestic violence is front-page news in a respectable and responsible newspaper. I read the paper because it provides an alternative to "if it bleeds, it leads" and gossip commonplace on TV news. Front-page stories should address topics such as poor access to mental health services and other public policy issues that contribute to problems in our society.

I know that newspapers are struggling, and I, too, am disappointed that the Globe has changed its format as a result. I look forward to reading the paper and would be sad to lose it, but I may have to switch over to The New York Times and get my local news elsewhere - yikes on TV? If I do this, I hope some of the cost of my Times subscription will be used to keep the Globe going.
